Rant: Sex and the city

As much as I wanted to slap Carrie....:nono:

Even though this is the slap episode, the dresses in this episode were so me and so dreamy. To this day they still hold up as something I'd happily wear. I think it was part one and two of An american in paris or something like that (the name of the episodes). I wanted everything in those episodes. I wanted to plunder Carrie's Paris Wardrobe  yes, just walk in there like gimme. It's sitting somewhere in storage just begging to be worn.

The outfit in the pimp slap scene :giggle: , I wanted that (I quoted you for it).

I wanted this one too (she can keep the cigarette but the big hair and dress is a yes, I'd just replace her hair with: I picture barrel curls on natural blown out hair

The dresses from the Paris episodes were absolutely DREAMY. I told y’all, like 80% of the reason I’ll be watching the reboot is for the clothes.

Fun fact, SJP has it in her contract that she gets to keep all of the clothes so all of that fabulosity actually IS sitting in storage somewhere just waiting to be worn. She has twin daughters so I guess they’ll have to duke it out one day for Mom’s wardrobe.

I think that in general, I liked Charlotte's wardrobe as a whole. I like the classic look. Carrie's outfits could be too out there for me, but when they were right...they were RIGHT.

Honestly, they all had outfits I'd love, even Miranda occasionally.

Umm, so of the four which archetype did you guys fall under?

I am much more mature and evolved now, but I used to be a mix of Miranda (logical) and Charlotte (a little ditzy) :ninja:

In my friend group, I was the Carrie b/c I was the writer of the group (and also bc i had my own Mr Big and Carrie like relationship ways....but ion wanna talk about that...). We all decided we had a side of Samantha.

If I had to choose one now, i don't know who I'd be.

I'm more of Samantha now, than I was before.

So let's talk about the reboot...or do we need another thread? I think it falls under the same category so I'm just going to post here since it was mentioned earlier.

I am not feeling these looks from the stills of the on set. It doesn't look promising. I hope they are faux stills :giggle: and they're trying to throw us off the scent.

I get it, they're older. They have stuff going on in their lives. BUT I'm just not seeing fashion  that I love here at all. If you see any other stills, have any other comments... or want to talk about it as it comes on let's post!

For some reason I tried to re edit the previous post and it would keep erasing that still. Maybe it's as horrified as me :giggle: and is refusing to accept that reality too (the outfits :look: ) . So I gave up and am trying to re post the still here without copy paste just from the image source address:

So Samantha's out and Nicole Ari Parker is in as one of Carrie's new best friends. I guess being dragged for lack of diversity finally go to them.
This is a pic promo from an article introducing the character. I'm not liking how hard they're making her look. And in some of the onset posts it appears like she has on much more makeup than the other ladies. I'm wondering if they're trying to play her down, hard, or dare I say even drag queenish. Or maybe I'm just a little sensitive about bw's images. :look:
This is the pic lead with her intro:

Off set she's looking like this in her promos (other projects and with her fam):

Onset she's looking like this (again it's like layers of makeup like even the lipstick looks like it was spackled/ overdone compared to the others. And I'm thinking it's to make her look drag queenish, excessive to downplay the fact that they all look pretty bad (the ww). And yes aging is a part of life so then why are you trying to alter her in what I find is a way to downplay her in order to make the others look better.

And I'm hoping I'm wrong when I see the show. Maybe with the right lighting she'll look amazing...

I'm not impressed. I never watched SITC. I found the programme trying so hard to be witty and relevant. In doing so, it became boring for me, tedious even. No no no no no. I had better things to do with my time rather than be told what a modern woman should think when they were really writing to a formula. I'd rather not be insulted in front of my telly, thank you very much.

They are doing another series? Really? The struggle to be witty and relevant has merged onto the looks and the task of making them look younger when they have just experienced a natural aging process. People get old. It's as simple as that. It's sad, desperate, thirsty and relies on the promise that people will pay for nostalgia.

Ummmmm....not me... sorrry...

The programme has died a death. Just let it rest (flop) in peace.

I don’t mind Nicole Ari Parker but I’m not feeling her being a replacement for Kim/Samantha. Sam was one of a kind. I’d rather they just focus on Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. Idk why they feel like they have to have four.

I’ll watch out of loyalty but I honestly don’t have high hopes for this. As much as I loved the series, it didn’t age well, and the second movie was terrible. We’ll see.

She's not playing Samantha. I'd have a problem with that on more than one level. Because we have enough stereotypes without being the black stereotypical jezebel of the group. If they want to replace Samantha replace her with some other ww or asian woman (basically women who will not be damaged by playing such a character)

Jezebel black sterotype: \
The Jezebel Stereotype - Anti-black Imagery - Jim Crow Museum - Ferris State University
The portrayal of black women as lascivious by nature is an enduring stereotype. The descriptive words associated with this stereotype are singular in their focus: seductive, alluring, worldly, beguiling, tempting, and lewd. Historically, white women, as a category, were portrayed as models of self-respect, self-control, and modesty - even sexual purity, but black women were often portrayed as innately promiscuous, even predatory. This depiction of black women is signified by the name Jezebel.1

She is playing her new bestfriend. She's certain to get into exploits too but she better not be the one to make up for everyone else's "monogamist" marriage images, translation the one that has to do allll the stuff Carrie writes about now because she is no longer in the dating world. :look:

The way I see it, no series really ages well especially on certain subjects. It is of its time only. I remember at the time thinking I could not relate to these ww who were running through every man in town without any consequences as well as calling their friends "the gays" and I think Sam even used the F word in an episode but it's okay because she has gay friends :look: . Even at the time I felt it was insulting. And I should say a little after the time because I had to wait to see the show (as a teen there was no way I was allowed and should not be). But eventually it was on tv everywhere and it lasted so long that I was able to catch parts of it entering adulthood...and now of course as it plays all the time at random times at night (so I watch when I'm bored).

Still I'd watch the new version because it's there on hbo and why not? I'm curious to see if they can pull it off. I'm curious from a producing and writing standpoint as a lot of things like this fall apart, but I'm also curious because the other show is just time passing fun when you want to just zone out late at night (at least for me). If I couldn't tivo it (And Just Like That), I think I'd never see it anyways :giggle: . That way as it records, I can go back and see it in my own time when there's nothing else on.

I know she’s not playing Samantha lol, but she’s obviously taking her place as the fourth friend. I think things would be just fine with the three of them only. One of the things that made their little clique special (at least to me) was that they’d been through so much with each other. Something about them adding someone new seems kinda cheesy and inauthentic to me.

I can see that.

I do not think they'll have the same dynamic. No way. If they just have her as "Carrie's
friend (Kinda like Stanford) and then the others are tight, that would work so much better. I am curious to how they're going to make it go down.

Uhm...okay. I'm just going to post first look photos at the cast :look: wardrobe (they are going to have to blast light on them when it comes to the aging thing  to soften the images. A good cinematographer can get it so maybe they'll look much better on film . Some age well, they...are not):

The lack of diversity on the show never bothered me at all. White women only hanging out with other white women? Why was everyone so up in arms about that? :lachen:

Granted, NYC was and is a million times more diverse than they ever showed on the show but this show focused on these 4 women and their lives. Diversity wasn’t a part of it, just like it isn’t for millions of other white people. So what.

I agree. It didn't make sense to make NYC look lily white but it would be unusual for white women to be close friends with a black woman.

I don’t have a problem with the way Nicole looks. The hair style, dark polish, and fashion in the first pic seems appropriate for New York. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was an attorney like her character in Soul Food but that would be redundant with Miranda being an attorney. She’ll definitely have a powerful position just based on the income and lifestyle of the others. Nothing about her look suggests she’s going to be a SAHM like Charlotte.

I don’t care for the makeup in the second pic but, compared to the others, she looks like the glamorous friend.

No one can replace Samantha but the three by themselves would be kinda boring. Samantha brought an element of comedy and outrageousness. I don’t think they’d try to duplicate that in the same way because it would be impossible but another character as the funny or savvy woman about town would probably work once the comparisons die down.

I feel for the others. We’ll mostly the actress who plays Charlotte. SJP still being so thin makes her look bigger by comparison. The same goes for Cynthia Nixon but I don’t think she was ever as small and she still looks the same. Maybe a size larger. I don’t have an issue with them aging or gaining weight but as a woman I know how it feels being compared to your younger self and thinner friends.

I jumped back when I saw this pic. The bleached blond hairline makes her look like death when scrolling. Really needs to be much darker to soften the look.
Yes and with the hair pulled back it makes it even more severe.

You said death I thought she looked witchy or scary movie ish (I realize that's not a word :lachen:) :giggle: . And I'm not talking the characters running from the disaster that awaits, but the disaster/horror that awaits. :look: This is not just an aging thing, it's how they're wearing their hair and well, everything from hair color to style, and clothing, etc(and in Charlotte's case her face looks like it doesn't move)

I don't think she needs a brown but a golden blonde would work or even darker.
