Steaming Challenge 2012 - Part 1

I am planning on going towards more organic products starting June 2012, and I have tons of "non" natural/organic products in my stash.

That means I will def have to steam weekly to use up my stash by June.
Anything left will be given away.

didn't steam last weekend bc i got my hair did. (i could've steamed prior to going but i didn't plan ahead).

i just steamed my henna in and will be steaming in my dc after i runse the henna out. still debating which dc :scratchch

eta:i washed out my henna and my hair felt so supple! i was actually taken aback. i don't know if i should attribute it to steaming or the extra long amla prepoo and my inaugural wash with my shikaika shampoo bar. i steamed with aowc for 20 min. under my heat cap now

yaya24 I've gone mainly organic too and the items that I have that are non organic I used as a pre poo or dry DC. I am heavy handed with them until they finish and using them on dry hair forces you to be heavy handed. I don't steam with them.

Steaming right now with a mix of Shea Moisture, Coconut oil, EVOO and KeraCare Humecto.

Depending upon how things are when I wash this out I may try it again it went on very nicely.

You can do it. So, what types of products are you planning on switching to?

Do you have any particular Lines in mind?

IDareT'sHair

I want to try Aubrey Organics White Camellia as my DC (probably add an oil) and maybe double it up as a leave in (for after blowouts).

I don't know yet.

After watching endless YT vids and reading reviews,

I ordered (and am waiting for) from the Oyin Handmade line:

Burnt sugar pomade - for smoothing my edges
Honey Hemp conditioner- for cowashes
Frank juice- for twist leave in / moisture refresher
Dew leave in- for retwisting at night (twistouts/braidouts)

I think I am good w/ these starters.

As for shampoo, I still have a few bottles of Elasta QP Creme conditioning shampoo (which I love) once I'm out I will try out using my bentonite clay.

Thanks for the recommendation on pre pooing w/ the non organic conditioners!

I'll have to unlearn dry DC w/ my natural products b/c thats the only way I DC (on dry hair)...

and as you said, it makes the products run low really fast.

Anytime yaya24:grin:...I only dry DC regardless, but with the good stuff I dampen my hair with aloe vera gel first:yep:

I never use Shampoo. Only to neutralize/chelate/clarify. :ohwell:

Most of the time, I use a Cleansing Conditioner.:yep:

A really good Shampoo though is: "As I Am Naturally" Cleansing Pudding (you can now get it at Sally) Excellent

And I also like Giovanni Smooth As Silk Shampoo.

Ah yes....Giovanni, I may even have some:look:

Finally used my steamer. Oh my it gets hot under there but the results were fantastic. Used silicon mix this time. Bab de caraol for my DD. Detangling was a breeze on her. So glad I got one.

bajandoc86: I'm in-

I keep saying I REALLY need to DC my hair this year (and use my steamer:ohwell:) bc I want to get from BSL to MBL by the end of the year and really focus on my hair.... I am only in the Caster Oil challenge so I think these two compliment each other...

1. How often you will steam? 1x/wk

2. What method are you using to steam? Huetiful Steamer

3. What products will you steam with? Alternate moisture & protein DCs and oils

I will steam within the next couple of days to count for this week

I'm sitting here trying to talk myself out of doing and oil steam. I've had water on my scalp every day this week.

I will be steaming during the black out with Giovanni Smooth as Silk. I am pre-pooing overnight with warm coconut oil.

I steamed for 1 hour with Gio SAS, and left it on for nearly 6 hours. I'll probably DC again this weekend with Aubrey Organics. :lick:

Sprayed hair with a mix of enso marrshmallow and moss serum and aloe vera juice then steamed. Now steaming with Qhem's CTDG'.

To the ladies using the lcl/ salonsrus steamer, does the water in the tank get cloudy?

I recently brought mine up from the basement and it had a lot of mineral deposit in the loading sprout which kept it from working properly which is why I had stopped using it. I actually thought it was broken, so word of advice use distilled water only or if you don't, try to clean it regularly. I called the company and they suggested running a 3 part water to 1 part vinegar to clean it, then run a water cycle before using. I did 1 Acv/water & 2 water cycles but the water in the tank turns cloudy and I cant remember if it used to do that when it was new.

I kept reading about people steaming, and felt left out :giggle: Figured might as well get my money's worth instead of leaving it in my basement to collect duet :ohwell:

Zaz Vinegar and water? I'm too lazy for alldat.

I clean it like all of my other dishes: Water, dish soap and a towel. Works every time.

I can get about 3-4 uses out of it before it gets cloudy. :)

Never had this problem......yet.:look:

I try to use distilled water when I use it, even though I have the one you can use tap water in.

tiffers thanks that did it, I was afraid to use good ole soap and water since they were telling me to do water and vinegar. Now the tank water's clear :yep:

I'm going to steam this Sunday with AO HSR :)

tiffers what parts are you cleaning on your unit? Is it the coils? I also got cloudy water in the tank with the first use.
