Ah, NO!! Definitely not the norm.

My step son is 13 and his mom gets NO perks at all. Granted, before DH and I started dating, he did buy her 3 different cars (used not new) and he was fixing her car for free regularly (he's a mechanic). These days she gets child support (not court ordered) and that is it. She tends to call for holidays & even signed his Father's Day card for the first time ever this year.....but perks like gifts, trips, spending the night, dinner - absolutely not.

I once read in some advice column about a man whose wife went to overnight trips and family vacations with her ex-husband and her current husband was asking if it was okay. So I'd say its not the norm, but there are definitely fools out there who fall for it.
