Why Such a STARK Difference in Hair Progress Between Tyra & Oprah?

Tyra's stylist was the one on stage doing her hair, no? He said not to double process. Did you get a chance to watch?
Yes Tyra's stylist was the one on stage doing her hair but blondebydesire was asking who it was that said that quote....of course its hard to tell who the first one is to say any saying:lol: especially ones about hair:scratchch: I'll edit my earlier post to say I believe Ted Gibson was the first to say that because I remember him saying that YEARS ago:yep:

Nope, I never watch Tyra's show. The way she only scratches the surface of most issues and leaves them unresolved annoys me and turns me off to her show, but she seems like a lovely woman, I like her as a person, definitely beautiful and I think her professional success is admirable:yep:

I agree with the posters that said we should show both Oprah and Tyra love they're both wonderful strong black women I actually think Tyra is a lovely well meaning accomplished woman who we can be proud of.

To all the posters who said its comparing two totally different hair types, I think thats a valid point too.

I was just making a commentary and asking a thought provoking question:)

Well, what if Oprah's hair grows an inch a month, and Tyra's only grows a third of an inch per month?

I actually thought Tyra's hair looked nice. Just because it wasn't down her back doesn't mean it doesn't look nice. I think the point of the reveal was just to show her real hair, not to show-off her hair.

watch Oprah's show from way back (I am talking at least 20 years here) and you will see that Oprah did exactly the same thing. She virtually invented the ratings grabbing "sensationalist" chat show format as we know it now...

Of course she has now changes direction to grab a different market and because she can now use her power, money (being amongst the richest women worldwide - at one point No1) and influence to decide the artisitic direction of her shows. Love oprah for opening the doors like that.

Hopefully Tyra and others like her will be ready one day to carry that lantern...

i'm thinking maybe oprah was purposely growing her hair while tyra wasn't... as we all know as aa women for the most part we have to purposely grow our hair out

Both of their hair looks nice. However, I was under the impression that Tyra was going to show her natural hair? Isn't her hair still relaxed?

If I remember correctly in an article that her stylist wrote. Tyra had a lot of color in her hair and he started cuting it out a little at a time.

What do you think is the biggest factor? I mean Oprah did the same protective styles Tyra did: Lacefronts & Weaves because obviously they're on TV every day and have to switch it up more often then most. But Oprah is now wearing her pressed hair out for the world to see and its thick lush strong layered and MBL:

Whereas I'm sorry but Tyra's hair looks sooooo average like every other black woman walking down the street that had a miseducation about their hair from Day 1 (this is borrowed from a post on the E/T board called First Screen Cap Of Tyra's Real Hair):

To top it off she has a stylist that got up on national television talkin bout you need to cut your hair to let it grow:eek: somebody pray for this girl:nono: aint she supposed to have the best stylists in the world @ her disposal? What I wanna know is what went wrong with Tyra? Maybe she just wasn't as determined? Do expect too much as a hair-centric person?

These are two women who have the same high demand lifestyle who both have access to the best of the best why such a stark difference in results? Maybe she should give going natural a try like Beyonce and Oprah did...idk

What do yall think? Why such a stark difference in results?

to me oprah's hair looks thicker than tyras...but I would not say tyrahs is bad compared to oprah...their hair looks fine to me...maybe they are different hairtypes and textures....

Both of their hair looks nice. However, I was under the impression that Tyra was going to show her natural hair? Isn't her hair still relaxed?
No, Tyra did not say she would show her "natural" hair..she said she would reveal her "real" hair. Meaning she would not be sporting her usual lacefront wig or any weave.

Oprah did have long thick hair growing up and as a young woman. In her early 20's she went to a salon to have her hair relaxed and it all fell out. So she had a TWA but by the time she got famous she had a nice head of thick hair. In the early 80's it was about SL and she seemed to purposefully keep it in the same style.

So long thick hair is not new to Oprah.

Oprah had VERY long thick hair as a child and teenager. I remember seeing pics of her.

And what is the purpose of comparing these two totally different people? I mean it's not like they are twins. Frankly, I think they both look fine and I'm proud of them for opening up the minds of those who don't think any of us can grow hair past our ears. Some of "us" even think that way. I was a slave to weaves for 17 years. I wore it like a security blanket. Like Tyra, I finally revealed myself to the world around me. Thank Goodness I didn't have people comparing me to those who have thicker, longer strands. And besides, everyone doesn't want Oprah's hair. I think it's beautiful, but who's to say that it's "better" than Tyra's just because it's longer and thicker?

Oprah has more money...more money means better products....blah blah blah....Oprah is rich Tyra is not as rich....that's the difference...and Oprah is older, she's more knowledgable, she has a better team of experts...

I agree with much of what's been said here. Plus, maybe Tyra wants to grow her hair long but you know, the LHCF def of long vs. RL def of long is very different.:drunk: Her hair is healthy and long in RL standards!

Oprah's hair is thick. Tyra's is not. Tyra's hair was dyed. Oprah's was not. Tyra was a wll-known fashion model for many years, and I'm sure her hair suffered accordingly. Oprah was not. I think that accounts for the difference. :yep:

(As a side note, Oprah may not be natural either, as some pointed out towards the end of the "Oprah = natural" thread. A few relaxed ladies posted out that their hair looks that big & poofy between stretches. When I was relaxed, my hair was always big & poofy.)

You have a point. My hair looks natural even though it's supposed to be relaxed.

This pic is of my "relaxed" hair

It's jealousy. Thats the only thing that makes sense:nono: either that or people's reasoning ability is just off.....

Even though I personally don't have an issue towards Tyra, I'll play devils advocate on this one and say most have issues with her because of the way she portrays women of color in general on her talk show. Most of the time she groups ALL women of color (mostly Black women) in the same category with what she may think (very vain to do so) and has topics which place Black women in a bad light. Topics about women of color bleaching themselves to be light skinned, about good hair and bad hair, Black men who refuse to date Black women and so on. It portrays most of Black women as full of self hate and vindicates all "others" who believe we are jelous of them and think they will always be more beautiful. Moreover, she is described as being stuck up and rude to people.

To the bolded, I think it is always implied that when you discuss an issue concerning a group, it is not the whole group but "many" belonging to that group. To assume anything else is really reaching.

To the red, black people (implied many and not all) and their denial KILL ME:wallbash:. Black women have hair issues. PERIOD. Black people have colour issues and some bleach their skin. PERIOD. Black women are less likely to find a mate than any other group and we collectively have lower marriage rates and more broken families. PERIOD. These are real and true, prevalent issues and while it may be hard to see it shouted from the mountain tops on tv, it's not like Tyra is lying about these things. Time for the wakeup call. Even on this board, people will fight and argue each other down about hair length, texture, complexion, men, can't find a man and on and on. So for the same people to complain, just does not make sense, when last week they were arguing about who isn't mixed cuz their skin is too dark or their nose is too big. I 'm so sick of the hypocrisy and superficiality.

It has to be jealousy. Tyra back in her day was the STUFF. She is light skinned, green eyed, gorgeous woman with a killer body and a lot of money and I think people are jealous of that. It's the same thing with Beyonce, people pick and pick at her trying to find a flaw because it makes them jealous that she is so "perfect" (whatever that means). So they sit there and pick at her hair, or her eyes are not real or her clothes are ugly or she's getting fat or too skinny or she's dumb, etc, etc.

The only difference between Tyra and Beyonce is that Tyra is more candid and will act a fool, make mistakes, fart, burp and have people do a weave check on her. She acts HUMAN. That makes her more of a target because she is more open and thus has more to be criticized about. Beyonce on the other hand is a Barbie. She never says the wrong thing, never is seen dressed down and nobody sees the real her, in interviews or on tv, she's always propped up:look:. You can't really find much to say about someone who doesn't say or do anything interesting except walk to and from her limo after dinner or prancing around on yacht from time to time:yawn:.

All this Tyra is mean, she's self-centered, blah blah blah, it's all speculation because none of us know her personally. I am realizing that many project their own insecurities and issues on celebrities and jealousy and insecurity drive alot of the silly banter.

I think Tyra just has naturally thin hair and Oprah has naturally think hair. Tyra hair looks no differently than what I can remember of her 15 years ago. Her hair is still the think flat stringy type.

Double, triple, and quadruple thanks.

Thank you for this. From what I seen from Tyra over the years she is very down to earth and those topics she has on her show reflect real life situations that take place in the black community and amongst black women. I think black women just get embarrassed when it is brought into the open, but it has a lot of truth to it.

Tell 'em why you mad, kurlee! :lachen::lachen::lachen:

You make some good points Kurlee :yep: I'm sure many are jealous of Tyra, others just don't like her because of their assumptions of her having a bad personality off camera. It's all a matter of opinion. In any case, her hair looks healthy to me, just fine strands. Everyone has their preference of what healthy long hair looks like. Some believe it has to look uber thick to be considered healthy, others it has to be natural, then others beleive it has to be super straight and sleek.

Sadly, none of what tyra talks about is untrue. These are real issues in the black community that need to be unearthed and talked about. Simple as that. Also, like Kurlee suggested, anyone with half a brain would realize that the black women on her show do not represent ALL black women, maybe many, but not all. Also, folks do not know this woman or beyonce or amber or Kim or any of these celebrities personally to make the claims that they are stuck up and rude.

Bolded: Major Peeve. Major. Stop worrying about what other races think. Build yourself up, work on your esteem, and keep it moving.

I second the jealousy theory.

I think you make a great argument here and upon further thought and seeing all the various responses I think you and all the other people who have made this argument are right I don't think it is fair to compare these two very different women.....I think I just got caught up in all the hype from when she was building anticipation for her huge REVEAL I was expecting something jaw dropping but I think it is unfair to compare her to someone who's completely different then her, so I agree.

I don't really get all the animosity towards Tyra.
I don't have any animosity toward Tyra. I think she's a remarkable woman who has made incredible accomplishments the fact that I think she can do better doesn't mean I have animosity for her, it means that I want her to continue on her path towards greatness.

I agree with much of what's been said here. Plus, maybe Tyra wants to grow her hair long but you know, the LHCF def of long vs. RL def of long is very different.:drunk: Her hair is healthy and long in RL standards!
Thats a great point, this board will skew what you think of as long hair:giggle: but at the same time I always thought APL and beyond was long hair even before I got here last week so hey *shrugs* but her hair looked pretty good.

You have a point. My hair looks natural even though it's supposed to be relaxed.

This pic is of my "relaxed" hair
poofhair.jpg
Well you have just a gorgeous head of hair missy! Love the thickness and the versatility....Oprah has actually specifically addressed this and told her audience that she transitioned with weaves and lacefronts but that she is now natural thanks to Andre and gets her hair pressed and curled for the show she addressed that late last season. Plus me and Oprah are hair twins and her hair looks exactly like mine blown out:grin: lol!!

You have some beautiful hair lovenharmony!! I think we have similar hair textures:yep:

I think you made great point here and summed it up wonderfully by saying "have an issue" rather then "hate" or "animosity". Just because you love and admire someone doesn't mean that you turn them into a flawless diety that can never do wrong.

This reminds me of the people that said "if you really love this country and you're a true Patriot you won't criticize it." Well I don't subscribe to this way of thinking, there are people that I think are making incredible strides for the image of Blacks in America and are really paving the way, that being said, do I think its healthy for little girls who admire her to see this<-- as the standard for Black beauty? No, and I will say as much but she isn't the only one doing it and wasn't the first so I don't place 100% of that on her shoulders.

Just like I adore Tyler Perry as a man, I find him charming witty and intelligent and I find his movies amusing but the fact that I adore him won't stop me from stating the fact that the substance in many of his movies (not all) is sorely lacking. Their human beings not a flawless deity. That's all.

All in all I think the people that said its not fair to compare these two women are right, its all good, we don't have to start attacking eachother over celebrities we don't even know:lol:.
