This is another myth. It does not take a lot of heat if you want to wear a straight style from time to time. In general people believe that the nappier your hair is the more heat you need to use to get it straight. That's why so many sisters lose their napps permanantly.

How else can u straighten natural hair???
huh.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Roller setting, banding, and flat ironing are a few ways...

[/ QUOTE ]

This is a great thread and very informational, too. Quick question: What is banding?

Banding is wrapping bands around the legnth of the hair to stretch it out and help ease some shrinkage. when it dries after being stretched out by banding, it stays somewhat in that stretched out state. showing the legnth more

You guys basically got all of the good ones but how about these:
Hair typing will help you manage your natural hair better. This is a huge misconception! Just because you and someone else have the same hair type does not mean that you will both like the same products. Just because you have the same hair type as someone else does not mean that you will get the same results using the same products they do.

On this board I always see tons of topics that start off like this “Natural 3Cs please help me.” Although I am not a natural 3C sometimes I see the responses to the thread and I laugh to myself because they are often recommending her to use products that I already use on my napps.

I once worked with a white woman who had very long bone straight hair. She used crème of nature shampoo, olive oil pre shampoo treatments. She even would sleep in 2-strand twists if she wanted to wear her hair in a wavy style. This woman and me basically had the same hair routine but our hair types were very different.

Natural women are not glamorous.
This is another myth. People always seem to believe that natural women are all Birkenstock having, no make-up wearing, hemp bag toting chicks. This myth drives me crazy. I love to keep my nails done. I love sexy clothes, and dangerously high heels. I don’t even own a pair of sweat pants.

Natural women go natural because they couldn’t grow long relaxed hair.
Everyone goes natural for different reasons.

If you can’t manage your natural hair then locs are the best option for you. Locs require no maintenance.
I don’t know who started this crazy myth but they need to be backslapped. Loced hair requires care and maintenance just like everyone else’s hair.

Natural hair hurts to comb
I think this myth comes from those distant memories of our mothers yanking out hair back into braids and ponytails when we were children. If your mother hurt you when doing your hair, then chances are that your mother had no real clue on how to comb, brush, or style natural hair properly.

Healthy hair is shiny hair
My natural hair does not really shine very much but it is still very healthy. I have no split ends or broken off hair. Some of us have natural hair that does not reflect light. Everybody's hair is different.

Pressing is the only way to get natural hair very straight
This is another myth. It does not take a lot of heat if you want to wear a straight style from time to time. In general people believe that the nappier your hair is the more heat you need to use to get it straight. That's why so many sisters lose their napps permanantly.

Natural hair is not for everyone.
Natural hair is for everyone because it grows out of your head that way. God don’t make mistakes. That statement should be changed to “Everybody does not want to wear their hair naturally” – that makes more sense.

That’s all I got right now. I’m sure that I will come back with a few more later. The crazy thing is that I used to believe most of these myths back in the day.

Daaaannnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg! I MISS one day of posting and LOOK AT THE KNOWLEDGE IN THIS ROOM!!!

Yall stole my THUNDAH!!

Excellent myth busing information.

I believed all those myths at one time myself. Thank goodness for time and age.

I just heard another outrageous myth on another thread:

If you wear your hair nappy...you will not get into heaven. (I kid you NOT)

Now obviously this person is dumber than a box of rocks but...let's humor them.

If this is the hair is was born with...the hair I was created with...then why would God disown me for something...HE GAVE ME?!?!?

When I hear bovine excrement like this...I feel like I am back at my grannys house and she is trying to force me to eat a spoonful of kerosene with a lump of sugar in it to kill a cold.

THIS IS 2004 PEOPLE!

The only way to bust up these atrocious lies...is to wear your naturally nappy LONG hair with pride and dignity. It is like if someone says "you're pregnant" when you're not...9 months from now will prove them a liar right? No need to even say a word to dispel the lie.

This is what I'm finding with my transition. The brush/comb glides through my hair right until I get to the relaxed part and then it's whoooa, baby!! Get that comb away from me!! It never stays untangled. I may be coming back on here after it's all gone singing a different tune, but right now - I love my new growth and my daughter's natural hair a whoooooole lot better.

You CANNOT comb transitioning hair if it is dry. This is the reason why many would say it would break off it you tried to grow out the perm.

sad but true...here are the experiences shared in that thread on NP entitled God wont let you in...etc

Today i was at the post office mailing an money order. I met my grandma there, so we said hi to each other and went on about our business. She met another lady there about her age she knew in her 70's also and they started talking. Anyway she turns to me and said is that your granddaughter, my grandma said yes. The other lady said that i didnt know who she was because thats the one t hat had all that long nappy hair. Then the keep talking and i hear them say her mother should of not let her cut it. Hair is a womens crown and glory and its a sin to cut hair. Then the other women said she should of left it long and got a perm then she said it would of been really pretty. I was like yea right what ever.(thats what i was thinking) Any how then she said God wont let her in to heaven with a nappy head.

2nd STUPID MYTH from same thread....
I am currently transitioning (3months now) to be naptural and everyone thinks that I am crazy for not having gotten a perm by now. But I can understand those people because I tonce just wanted to be invisible and blend in with the rest of the world at any cost of pain (Not anymore). But what I could not believe was when I went to my boyfriend's church for the first time last Sunday. The preacher actually said "Can't nobody with no nappy hair tell me nothing about God. If your hair ain't permed when its supposed to be, then you can't preach the word of God. You can not speak the word with your hair out all over the place." Can you believ that? What does someone's hair have to do with the word of God? Especially someones God-given unaltered hair.

Naturals.. Could you be a little more honest in your responses or elaborate?

I mean I'm hearing Myth, then a breif response and while most might be, some are not myths but VALID, truths. I think you all have just mastered the art so to speak. But if truth be told, it is hard to manage. People in Corporate, DO look at us differently and guys, the majority DO still like long hair.

So YES, there is percentage that have mastered, but please tell the whole truth. I personally know some people who did not get "the job" cause of how the fro is perceived by corporate america. I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS RIGHT.. Please read this again before responding I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS RIGHT.

But it is the truth nonetheless. So I think we teach each other how we overcome these obstacles and strenghten/encourage those considering not straighting and not offer false hope, but be honest with them.

Lastly, it is not BRAINWASHING, everyone is not ignorant, I have a degree and am very educated and I've straighten, not due to BRAINWASHING that straight is better, but due to the sole fact, and I mean fact that I like to comb/groom my hair and unstraighten does take WORK. Please be honest ladies.

For those that take posts the wrong way, please don't. Just be honest. Love ya.

I have yet to tell a lie on this board. I don't think anyone on this board has said that things NEVER happen but in OUR experiences, they have not.
You've gotten honesty. What more do you want?

Also, having a degree does NOT mean that you aren't ignorant to some things...

*where's that pimp slap smilie when you need one...*

who said its hard to manage? who has the authority to say all natural hair is hard to manage? it is no harder to manage than relaxed/texturized/short/long etc. hair. you have to learn how to care for that type of hair. its hard to manage when you try a technique that is not appropriate for that hair type.

i dont think think people are saying corporate america doesnt look at us differently. just simply the fact that you CAN get a job wearing locs, twists, twas, etc in corporate america. may not be 90% of the time..but people can still get jobs or even wear their hair in that manner once they are in.

again..somewhat a similar response to the above about men and their preference for long hair/relaxed hair. it isnt all men...i do not think anyone has said ALL men would rather a woman be natural. but people are simply disspelling the myth that...you CANT get a man wearing nappy hair/twas/afros..etc.

Mindymouse,
I am being very honest.

When I say "myth" I don't mean "myth" literally - ya know, like folklore, fairies, and unicorns. When I use the word myth I say it to mean generalities about natural hair that we generally believe to be truth. Using the word myth is just short and to the point. Of course some women have serious trouble with their natural hair but a lot of these women are trying to achieve something that their hair won't do easily. I call these things myths because they are general statements that black folks believe to be true about nappy hair.

Is that what you mean? Maybe I just don't understand your post?

I think everyone is being honest, it's just not YOUR truth. If you think "nappy" hair is hard work, it will be because you will be fighting it's "nappiness". I swear it takes NO TIME to do my hair. I con-wash it, apply some product and I am DONE, it is not as hard to manage as some people who do a lot to their relaxed hair.

Secondly, are some people biased against natural hair in the workplace, yes, but are all people...NOT BY A LONG SHOT and also most people who oppose "nappy" hair are the people who have it themselves and straighten it (sad, but true).

Thirdly, a college degree doesn't make anyone any less brainwashed (not saying that you are, but your degree doesn't by default make you not).

I think you are absolutely right Mindy...

There are prejudiced people in Corporate world who hate natural hair. There are men who dont like natural hair. There are people who cannot learn (or dont want to learn) how to "manage" natural hair.

The MYTH is...or the sweeping generalization is...that you cannot get/keep a job with our natural hair. That is false and there are thousands of nappies that prove it everyday. I, for one, work in Corporate Finance and I wear an afro or puff EVERY DAY.

The MYTH...or sweeping generalization...that men dont find natural hair attractive again is proven false in the rising natural brothers who sport locs, braids, fros etc and want to see women in the same way. My husband loves long hair...but he does not ever want me to perm it again.

Just because there are myths and sterotypes in reference with natural hair...does not make them true. All of the naturals that have responded are proof of that. Many have lived with their natural hair for years. Many of us...from infancy to teenage years did not relax our hair. Our mothers carefully washed and plaited our long ponytails that hung to our waist. It can be lived with, grow long, look professional and be attractive. That is a fact.

The prejudices are also a fact...so much so...that people tend to believe the lie.

Myth: You have the type of hair to go natural.
Truth: No honey, I had no idea how my hair would look once I went natural. I just took it as I went.

Myth: Naturals go natural because their hair has fallen out.
Truth: People go natural for a lot of reasons. True some may stop due to damage, but there are many people like me who just wanted to see what was hiding under the straightness.

Myth: No man will date you.
Truth: Not so. I dated my man relaxed, cut off almost 20" of relaxed hair and went natural, and we married two years later...I was still natural.

Myth: my newgrowth with a relaxer is wavy so my natural hair will be too.
Truth: There's a small chance that might happen. But most often a relaxer pulls the natural hair texture distorting the true texture for many people.

Myth: Natural hair doesn't grow because it's always breaking.
Truth: I think that is how you take care of your hair. It might be true for a small minority of naturals who might have a two year hair growth span, which depending on curl tightness will stretch out to shoulderlength. But my hair grew to 3 inches past shoulderlength before I texturized it again, and that was in 2 years. Shrinkage is DECEIVING!!!

I don't think acne and the NATURAL texture of your hair are synonymous. Also, acne is a byproduct of toxins as you said. Your hair texture is a result of genetics given to you by God. Apples and Volkswagons, that is the comparison you're trying to make.

Also someone saying that something is "unsightly" doesn't make it so.

Thirdly, just because people alter their appearance with chemicals or surgery doesn't make it alright and you hit the nail on the head when you said that WE feel the need to change, it's not a neccesity to change that.

Fourthly, why in God's name are you so anti-natural hair for black women?
