Man I won't lie, things like that hurt. I guess because I am very dark skinned, and it's something I have to deal with every day and 99% of the time it's from other black folks.

I've never had a non-black man tell me I was too dark, or "pretty for a dark skinned girl," or that I'd be prettier if I was lighter. I've heard all these things before. While they don't hurt me as much as they used to, it still bothers me that folks (especially my black people) would think me less attractive just because I was "too dark."

To each their own I guess.

I use to love light skinned men when I was a teenager but to me they seem a little too much over the top for me now...Now as I'm older, I love me a dark skin sexy man:yep: but I won't pass up a fine arse light brotha either.

Ok, we're talking about preferences right?
So the poster said whatever she said. That doesn't affect any of us because we're not males, and I doubt she'd have any interest in us.

That being said.

There were some posts that talked about light, but not too light, but nobody stopped on that one.

It appears it's safer to have a preference in the middle of the spectrum, so you can make everyone happy.

:lachen:

Sorry to be late, but I noticed it big time. If someone says, not to light, its fine. No one gets offended. No one questions or rebukes it in the name of Jesus, lol, not to that extent, but you know what i mean lol

But when one says, as long as he's not to dark, ppl start to question and seemingly gets offended. Thats when we all must realize, preferences are preferences. Some may like a preference that is the same as what you've had issues with. That person has that right. As long as their preference isnt based on feeling one is SUPERIOR to another or one is LESS THAN another, than it shouldnt bother anyone. If it does, its an internal issue that one must conquer. And dont worry, we ALL have issues, and must conquer then. They just have a different name, so trust me when I say, you are CERTAINLY not alone.

We just need to learn to respect those preferences and opinions. More importantly, learn how to SEPARATE others situations from our negative experiences. For ex, the ladies who said not to dark, are not saying anything about you. Only how they like their guys.

I agree with this, but I also understand those that raise a suspicious eye when someone states a preference for lighter or whiter features. I think due to the history with white beauty as the dominant standard beamed around the world a lot of people are paranoid that passionate preference for lighter skin can be a result of conditioning. I've rarely encountered people who prey for their children to be born dark skinned, with kinky hair and broad noses, but I've encountered numerous people obsessed with how fair their child comes out or whether they have "good coolie" hair :ohwell:

I personally don't make a judgment unless the person says or does something weird, I just take preference as just preference, but I will say of the many guys that stated a preference for my light skin, very few just had a random preference for light skin. Sooner or later came the weird or disparaging comments about dark skin, the comments about "good hair" or fear of sun. I had a guy who was fascinated by my nose which he said was like a white woman nose, he hoped our children would have "nice fair skin and good features". One time when I told him that a pair of sunglasses wouldn't look good on his skin tone he accused me of calling him dark and literally cursed me out. I kindly informed him that his chocolatey self hating arse could proceed to kiss my

i love dark skinned men. i don't like light skinned men if they are "pretty boys"; chris brown is cute but if he were just a normal everyday guy I probably wouldn't consider trying to date him.

I am medium brown, in the middle. I do prefer guys my shade or darker.

LOL ! Glad you did. He realllllly had issues ! Thinking is one thing. Saying is another ! lol. I do see where you're coming from. Some have a pattern for lighter skin and it may be a result of our society.

Then again, I guess I go back to my earlier angle, that no matter its origin, if that person's preference does not create a dislike for one over the other, mistreatment of one over the other, then its just a preference. Now, someone is issues like the guy above, taking a statement , stretching and adding to it, then jumping the gun, is just one example.:nono: But, I'm saying if it solely exists in that person as what they like, but not a character or human judgement on that person, it should be fine.

Just my opinion. yawns , its late , lol

But girl, I've gotta ask you this, one of the guys say he fears the SUN ? lol you have GOT to be KIDDING me !

Funny this thread resurfaced. I was going to mention this in the Obama cover thread, but thought better if it. I do agree ppl have preferences, but it sort of bothered me that it was brought up in the thread that Obama is lighted skinned. I personally prefer dark skinned men and to see Obama reduced to a shade of Black left me with a bad taste. I am not trying to bash anyones opinion but I sure hope it does not come down to Obama's shade of blackness that gets him elected or not elected president.:perplexed
I am probably going to get stoned for this....:bricks:

I like both so I didn't vote. I look at the overall person rather than the skin tone. Facial features, body type, height, etc. matter a whole lot more than skin tone.

It's all so subjective, because until I read your post I didn't know Obama was considered light skinned. I'm much lighter and I never thought of his complexion as having anything to do with his "blackness", but if I had to categorize his complexion I'd think it much the same way as Halle, a medium brown/caramely complexion.

I don't see him as light skinned either. So maybe that was why it stuck out to me.

I prefer dark, but I've had a redbone or two thrown in the mix. I also love a caramel colored man, kind of like Beyonce's complexion. And don't let him have wavy hair!!! LAWD!!!! :lick:

I don't think you'll get stoned. I think one of the people that mentioned his complexion did so b/c of the larger society (although I agree that his complexion won't get him elected).
