"Get your hands Outta Your Hair!" Challenge

I have been doing good. I have been mainly wearing a wig which I am getting tired of. I am hoping to get some braids this weekend.

Last week I was away from home and had my hair in a bun all the time to keep it away from the east coast weather, so I was able to keep my hands out of my hair all week (a record for me LOL). Now that I'm back home, I'm still keeping it out of the way and leaving it alone. It's helping my hair condition a lot! So far so good =)

I've been really good with this..and I think my hair is really growing

I CW only twice a week and then my mother (who is the ONLY person I truly trust with doing my hair) will apply castor oil on my hair and put it in cornrows.. my hair is under a scarf when I'm outside! :yep: I'm using MT every morning too on my scalp in between the cornrows SO I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE RESULTS.. I may post pics on Halloween (the next time I decide to straighten my hair)

I've been doing really well. Especially this weekend and today. I've been really sick so I've been at home with my silk cap on. I barely got through my wash day on Saturday. So definitely less HIH!

I feel that now that the 1 month hump is almost over with it will be smooth sailing from here. Basiclly the first month is an experimental period where you feel out what protective styles/methods of handling your hair work best for you and with the least amount of manipulation. Now that we've got a feel for what we'll be doing for the remaining 3 months, it should be easier for us, don't you think?

Now that you mention it, you're so right, *Muffin*:drunk: The benefits I'm getting from leaving my hair alone is a good incentive for me to stay strong until the end of the year:yep:

Oh Yah:yep: Can't wait for the results.

I have a confession................... I cheated today. I blew dry my hair :wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: My intentions were to just apply indirect heat to certain parts that were still damp. Then I told myself "okay I will just don't this one little piece". Next thing I knew I was using the comb on my whole head. BUT I must say I have gotten a lot of growth. I can almost kick myself for not taking pictures of my hair straight when I did the BC. When DD gets home from school I will have her take pictures and update my Fotki.

It's okay letitgrow0702:bighug:. We all have slip-ups occasionally. It's all apart of the learning process. I'm glad you've achieved a lot of growth. I'm definitely feeling some NG sprouting up on me, lol.

P.S. Remember that you get three get out of jail free cards with this challenge, so it's all right to to do what you want to your hair every once and a while. I don't think what you did uses one of them up because the get out of jail free cards are in the event of a special occasion (like holidays, special events, etc...). So we'll just let this incident slide

What's done is done, so don't beat yourself up about it honey, just get up, brush yourself off and start again. Try to go all the way from here on out knowing that you are a success and you can do this challenge come what may, okay? Blessings honey.

Okay ladies, we're officially one month into the GYHOYH challenge :). How's everyone holding up? It's pretty much become second nature to me now. I'm used to washing my hair once a week and not messing in it too much. And I'm experiencing a lot of NG, so that's a plus. I can't wait to everyone's final results at the end of the challenge. I guess we could either post length/fullness comparisons and/or NG pics.

This is one of the most difficult challenges. I am really having a hard time. I feel my scalp tingling and I want to touch it and pull at it. I am not one for the combing because I keep it rollerset, but I have to have my hair wrapped around my fingers. Pray for me ladies because this is rough. I think I have a compulsive disorder or something.

The only touching I'm doing to my hair is moisturizing my ends, no combing, no brushing, so I'm doing very well for now and will continue to because I am determined to get through this challenge a winner.

A week ago did a touchup (aborted transition). I've been under the weather so I haven't touched my hair in a few days, except to do MT apps. I haven't even felt like doing anything to it either. Just up in a bun all the time. But at least I'm keeping my hands out of my hair =) Thinking about doing a DC and cowash today if I can get up enough energy.

I'm sorry that you're having a difficult time with the challenge :bighug:. I know about compulsions because I used to be a compulsive eater. Whenever I felt stressed or upset I'd run to food (almost like a smoker runs to cigarettes). Perhaps manipulating your hair is your body's automatic response to stress/high-anxiety situations. One thing that has helped me is to sort out my feelings is that whenever I got the urge to compulsive eat I would ask myself "Why do I feel like eating right now?" and the answer usually had something to do with wanting to feel better or calm myself down. I kept a journal and wrote about what was bothering me instead of over-eating, and eventually I learned to do that instead of feed my compulsion. Perhaps you could try the same thing. Whenever you get the urge to manipulate your hair ask yourself "Why do I want to do this right now?" maybe you're going through some stress at the moment. You could try writing in a journal (if you like writing) to sort out your feelings or replace one habit for another more positive habit. Like whenever you feel like manipulating your hair you could turn on the radio and dance/exercise to relieve the stress. Or whenever you feel the urge to manipulate your hair you could find something else to do to
occupy your time, like something that you've been putting off for a while (like laundry, dishes, sorting through papers). This may help you not to focus less on your hair and more on other things. I don't mean to sound like a psychiatrist or anything. I just want to help you get through this compulsion and help you succeed at the challenge :).

im going to take a picture of my fresh length and my days for munipulation are fridays and saturdays.. those are the days I hit the club.. all other days are work .. so yes I will be taking a pic to showing my length after my very recent sunday cut and new purchase of mega tek

I am officially out of this one, I co wash and bun everyday ... instead of the allowed two :perplexed

You can do it!!! Since you already have a habit of not combing that will already do wonders for your hair!!

Continue the good work girl!! Can't wait to see the progress you'll make!

Get Well Soon! I am sure your hair is thanking you for the low manipulation

Second Nature?!! That is good, you should fly through this challenge! Keep it up ... I'm going to be watching for the progress on the side lines

Happy Hair Growing Ladies

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I wish you all the best in your hair growth journey too :yep:.

I was wondering how you ladies have been styling your hair on a daily basis. I've been relying a lot on protective styles, but not always. It's all right for you to wear your hair in a regular ponytail or in a style where the length of your hair is exposed as long as you don't heat style it, run your fingers through it, or manipulate it on any other day except your two styling days. I've been mostly wearing braids and braid outs on the week-end. They are a really easy and functional style. And the braiding helps me moisturize my hair better because I'm taking my hair section by section and moisturizing that way.

Ladies, I am hanging in there. Doing great. I have a notepad to scribble on so I don't put my hands in my hair. It's great. I have a million doodles all over it. I have only been touching my hair to scratch the scalp. My rollersets will be in effect until February. I have been doing much better. Some of the OCD has subsided, but it's only due to my LHCF sisters supporting me. Thanks ladies. This is a hard challenge, but I am making it through so far, much better. I told my DH about the challenge and so he reminds me of my commitment to keep my hands out of my hair.

Good for you, Silkydreamgirl :clapping:! I'm glad you're hanging in there. It's not an easy challenge to commit to, but I strongly believe that the end result will be worth it. I can't wait until January when I see all the progress you guys have made. As for me, somedays are better than others. I find it's so easy to slip up because no one's really on you all the time to make sure you're doing right, but overall I think I'm succeeding. Today I'm wearing my hair in two braids (a la Pokahontas,) and I originally wanted to unravel them and play in my hair, but I decided not to. I'll just keep it like this. I feel that I'm reaping benefits because a couple of days ago my mom was cornrowing my hair and she said "Wow, you got all this NG and you're only a month and a half past relaxer?" I feel the extra NG is due to religious scalp massages every night. Have any of you ladies noticed any progress so far since you've started this challenge, or is it too early to tell?

I notice a difference already. I finally got around to co washing yesterday and not only noticed my hair is getting thicker, but it has grown more towards APL--there were a few strands touching. I can't wait until the rest catches up. I think this is because of the MT and messaging. The sock bun I made last month is already too small to use, so I'm gonna have to make a bigger one:grin: It's like opening a present and finding a nice surprise:drunk:

At this point I am forced to keep my hands out of my hair because I am stretching my relaxer (will be 10 weeks post on Sunday coming) now and can't seem to comb through the new growth without grimacing in pain and discomfort, lol. So I only wash once a week now. I want to henna my hair too but I can't handle the new growth with the henna right now either:nono:. So I'll just wash and DC it on Sunday.
