"Get Your Hands Outta Your Hair" 2009 Edition

I need this challenge. If it is not too late, I would like to join. I have HIHS (Hand In Hair Syndrome) I have this BAD! Maybe a challenge will help me stop.

I'm so proud of myself. I'm finally getting the hang of the no-combing dry hair thing. It used to be so hard trying to be patient for the two days out of the week that I wash and DC my hair too comb it, but now I think I'm getting it. I've pretty much been bunning my hair up and wearing it in low-maintanence braids since the beginning of the challenge.

I drop one of my challenges that required length checks to focus on this one. I will try to wash every two weeks, depending on my workouts. I am moving to a very low maintence regimen. Bunning 24-7, no heat for the rest of the year. I read a post that inspired this decision. I am even more excited about this challenge.

Hey I want in too if I can. I'm two weeks post weave and experiencing some issues to say the least, but my stylist is supposed to trim/dust/hack whatever is needed the spilts and weak ones out.
**left hand on product case, right hand in air**I commit to no heat for three months (four if I can. March 1-May 22 (off for labor day weekend partayay) and I'll instruct my stylist not to heat my hair when I see her next week. I can still use heat cap for dc right?
Thanks for getting us all together.
BTW I'm looking for a hair big sis/coach if there's someone out there. PM me if you're interested. thanks

Welcome to the challenge supermodelsonya and angiet1985. It's never too late to start doing things that benefit your hair :yep:. Make sure you write the start day of your challenge and how long you are committing to in one of your posts.

Yeah, I did too :). I want to focus on hair health this year. I feel you on the no heat thing, too. I did end up using my heat pass and flat ironing my hair today for my b-day, and it looks pretty good. I probably won't use heat anymore for the rest of the year either (but don't hold me to it). I usually only heat style for special occasions.

Happy belated B-Day....
Well I was transitioning for 8 months but I relaxed on Sunday. I am very happy with my growth. Besides relaxing I am doing well. This challenge will be the key to growth and retention for me.

I put my hair in cornrows last night for no manipulation and growth aid application. I will be wearing these under a headwrap as long as I can stand it

hmm

i'd like to join this - still open?!
i had decided to go low manipulation again anyway

my low mani regimen will be

- wear twists
-wash/dc/avocado butter up on weekend ( start process on friday-and end on saturday)
-put up in a style with ends hidden, wear style all week until friday comes around again.

oh - i'm going low mani for the rest of the year

probably even into the next. haha.

Been a bad lady this week. Had a hard time keeping hands out of the new growth:rolleyes:. I have 3-1/2 weeks left until touch-up time (it will be 6 months then). So today I decided to straighten the new growth in order to keep myself in check. I will try to keep it this way for a week. So far I don't have a reason to play in my hair now because it is all one texture. Let's hope this works:look:

I'm guessing sence you only need to commit to one month outta of the year that i can still join, this challenge stood out to me right away i'm always absent mindly running my fingers through my hair or twirling it perfect challenge for me although heats gonna be hard especially sence i don't relax my hair but i'm willing to give it a try count me in. i'm going to try and commit to a month depending on how well i do i'll keep going

Welcome to the challenge jmac, runrunrunner, and AmbyC92! And yes, sew-ins are fine :).

Update:

So far I haven't been good with keeping my hands out of my hair. My NG is really coming in and I've been feeling it up some, but I haven't been combing though. I only comb on wash days, so at least I'm not damaging it in that way. I have a bad habit of trying to run my fingers through my hair though so I'm going to try to keep my hair in a set style, especially with how thick my roots are getting. I always experience the most breakage in months 3 and 4 of my 4 month relaxer stretch.

I'm going to try to update weekly or bi-weekly. Maybe this will help me be more aware of what I do to my hair.

This week wasn't so bad. I didn't comb my hair at all (except for wash days), but I still have problems with running my fingers in my hair. When it's down it feels like I can't help it. Ironically it seems like I only want to run my fingers through my hair when it feels like crap. I'm constantly trying to smooth it, spritz it, do something to it to make it miraculously feel soft and supple, but none of that works. I discovered it's the way I've been washing my hair. I've been drying it out too much. I co-washed my hair today and added a bit of acv to cleanse, DC'd, and my hair felt so soft and good, even when it dried. And since it felt the way I wanted it to I didn't feel the need to "tame" it, so I just braided it up and covered it with my scarf. I have to start learning to work with my hair and not against it. If my hair isn't cooperating with me and feels bad it's probably not going to be solved with me manipulating it. That just worsens the problem.

I've been good this week. I've been co-washing/detangling my hair 3 days a week (and DC'ing two of those days) and after my hair is washed, detangled, and conditioned I allow it to dry about 75-80%. Then I just put in some low-maintanence braids, seal the ends with shea butter, and that's it. No other manipulation. I've done this for 5 days so far. On the week-ends I usually allow myself to wear my hair in other ways, but that's usually just in a bun-clip. I felt the intense urge to play in my hair today, though, because I was stressed out (and I tend to pull on my hair when I'm stressed), but I resisted. I kept them in the braids .

I am taking Chlorella and applying Megatek at least four times a week. I re- did my cornrows.

So far...NO manipulation for two weeks. I was re-doing the cornrows once a week, now I am going to go every two weeks...

Loving this challenge!!!!

hello i'm new but have really been reading throughout the site. i need to try this as i put my hands in my hair alot and I overcomb in the shower.

I understand @ the bolded. I've been working on a website for class, and I catch myself playing in my new growth when I have trouble with the code:wallbash:--I've been leaving the ends alone, though. I've been keeping my ends protected by putting them in a french roll after moisturizing. I'm planning on ending my 6 month stretch soon, so I hope that the retention is there.

I would like to continue on this challenge for another 4 months

Weekly Update:

Challenge is going very well. Still doing the braids 5-6 days a week. I usually allow myself one or two days on the week-end to wear my hair anyway I'd like. Nothing really knew, just really enjoying the challenge :).

I guess I'll check in too. I had an appt for a retouch, but cancelled and am now in cornrows/individuals (n back) I do very little to my hair besides adding moisture (cowash 1x week and lightly oil my ends and scalp 3-5x a week. Oh and I add OCT to my scalp 3x a week). I usually wear my braids in a bun 3-5 days a week. I plan to take down and retouch the third week of May (memorial day weekend). I'll be nearly 20 weeks post then (whew!) I know I'll have a battle ahead of me that day. I might have to make it a four day week end. Thanks for the challenge. It's really helping me keep that heat outta my hair. I KNOW I would have broken down if it weren't for the challenge (and braids)

I just wanted to apologize to you, Mrs. Fitness, because I noticed that I never put your name up as a member of the challenge . Just added you and definitely glad to have you aboard. :yep:.

Still keeping my hands outta my hair which is becoming harder now since I've bought a ton of products I want to try. Also my hair is getting softer by the minute. I'm fascinated by new growth too but I'm doing well.

Mine too!. Could there be a relationship between over-manipulation and rough feeling hair? When I used to comb my hair obsessively my hair had a rough feel to it. It's probably because I rubbing my hair shaft constantly, lifting the cuticle scales or something. But now that I've stopped that and have been incorporating honey and ACV into my hair routine my hair feels softer and smoother. Loving this and the DC'ing challenge!

Aside from doing treatments, I've been doing better keeping my hands out of my hair. It helps that I am disgusted at how my touchup turned out a couple of weeks ago. I do protein/dc treatments (did one today), scalp treatments, and put it up. Good news is that I can now make an unassisted bun, finally =)

Checking in:

I'm doing great on the challenge. I've really fallen into the routine of not manipulating my hair. I've become lazy, but in a good way. I'm no longer trying to make my hair do tricks. I just put it in a set style and keep it that way. It's not going to grow any faster or look any healthier by me constantly combing and yanking at it, lol. So it's braids and buns for me. My NG is coming in THICK, but it's really manageable. I just comb it when it's wet with a wide toothed comb when my hair has conditioner in it, and it glides through, so I haven't had problems with breakage this time around. It might also be because I've been faithful to doing protein DC treatments every 2 weeks as well. And I scarf my head overnight so that my NG lies flat the next day so my hair doesn't look puffy. That also helps control the urge to comb.

Yep, I believe the protein treatments help tremendously in helping control breakage and keeping the line of demarcation strong:yep: Great!!
