I really hate the phrase "hair porn"

Furthermore, this topic, or approach, reminds me of the way the word "B----" is now thrown around in our society. At one time, that word was not allowed on tv, it was bleeped out because it was considered too vulgar or offensive for public tv, and now its usage is as acceptable as, "How do you do?", some even greet their friends like that. I knew even as a child, when Joan Collins used that word in Dynasty back in the early 80s, that the flood gates would be open to other offensive language and content on public tv, where anyone, especially young people would be exposed.
I guess what I'm getting from this topic is while some say it's not offensive, I wonder what then is offensive? Have we become so desensitized as a society to the point where anything and everything goes? Freedom is great and all, but at what cost does that complete utter freedom come? If I'm 'doing me" and you're "doing you", then what happens to us?
These are just my thoughts on the subject, not calling anyone out or arguing, just putting my thoughts out there.

There is no scripture in the bible that describes Jesus has having long hair. One may form the opinion that Jesus wore His hair long from the countless paintings depicting Jesus as having long flowing hair. Those pictures also show Jesus to be blond, blue eyed and fair skinned which has been proven to be false given His stated nationality.

Nevermind. I googled the answer. The passage I was asking about is most commonly interpreted as "adhering to gender roles more than about hair length and hair rules". (i.e., a man should look like a man and a woman should look like a woman.)

^^^I think you're giving the word waaaaaaaaaaaay too much power. LOL. Anything and everything most certainly does not go just because we use the word "porn" "too lightly". Things like rape, child abuse, snuff films, torture etc. will never be okay in our society.

How much control is too much?? Controlling others through religion isn't perfect either. As evidenced by history, that didn't work out too well for us. Of course freedom isn't perfect, nothing on this earth is. Isn't that what your bible teaches you?

I dislike the term "hair porn" for two reasons, and neither of have anything to do with religion.

1. The socio-political aspects of the term: Because the members of this board are predominantly women of African descent, the term resonates with me as a form of objectification (hair is being used to sexualize women--I am not saying this is anyone's intent; this is just how it resonates with me.). It makes me think of how women of African descent have long been objectified because of their skin and bodies. It seems like that objectification is being passed along to hair. Furthermore, we all know about the political aspects regarding our hair (its roots as a source of shame dating back to slavery and colonization, as well as how it serves as a marker of our African blood). The objectification was a way for our oppressors to simultaneously dehumanize and derive pleasure from us. (Again, I don't feel that anyone on the board is trying to dehumanize anyone else. I just notice a stark comparison between "hair porn" and objectification. It's as if we HAVE to be objectified to be deemed "acceptable").


2. The Neurological Relationship between Language and the Brain: On the surface, "hair porn" may seem like an innocent-enough term. We know that, on the board, it is used to denote desirable hair. However, language is embedded in our brains, so it may be possible that our "hair porn" is stored in our brains with an additional meaning of a sexual or objective nature.

curlyninjagirl, I can't speak for MrsHdrle but I read her post as though she were going beyond the word "porn" and just speaking in general as to where we are as a society. I do question how much is too much. The longer I live I am learning also to never say "never"! There are things that I thought would never be ok in our society that are perfectly ok now. Back in the day, porn would have been included in your list of what would never be ok along with rape and the other things you mentioned. I don't see a call for "religion" to be more controlling as the answer. I personally don't put too much stock in "religion" which is a pretty generic term to me.

You are correct. The bible along with history and our specific life experiences all reveal the imperfections of this life. The bible has also taught me so much more for which I am thankful.

see, some have the same reaction to the term "hair porn". to me "porn" is YUCK (yeah surprising..not everyone enjoys watching random folks sexing it up). so pairing the word with beautiful hair is less than desirable.

I don't like the term and wouldn't feel flattered if someone referred to my hair as "hair porn". i do however, know what people mean when they reference it and because i like looking at nice heads of hair i'll click on the thread

i'm a christian too so i get where OP is coming from. at the same time i don't really refer to it as my crown and glory either. my hair endeavors are admittedly vain

And I personally feel that the usage of .gifs are sometimes appropriate and sometimes they are not. In this situation, I felt that they weren't. But that's just my opinion.

This is how I feel about 75% of the posts in the thread. It's not the fact that you disagree with the OP that bothers me, but I feel that many of you acted childish and disrespected her honest and sincere opinion. People are saying "if she didn't want to be disagreed with then she shouldn't have posted." It's not about that, it's about being able to come here and express your opinions without putting others down or making everything into a joke. I know we're pretty laid back here, but not every topic someone posts is "for the lulz."

In response to Curlyninjagirl, in "MY Bible" (since you put it that way) it says to love eachother and loving means to respect and want the best (health, prosperity, joy, beauty,...) for everyone (and it's not my place to decide or determine who deserves it or not, I just do it-love). Whatever that is or means may be subjective, but I don't like being called out of my name, so while someone may be in their right to call me that (insert any offensive thing or word), I don't have to answer to it.

I just question, as an older woman who has seen a lot of change in the last 30-40 years, where we are heading morally? I'm not perfect, nor do I expect it from everyone, but I try to do what's right and even when I do/am wrong, I feel convicted for it. I worry when people do wrong and don't feel anything about it. I guess that's where I was going in my thinking....I know it's off topic, but this topic gave me food for thought 'cause Lord knows when I saw "Hair Por.." see, I'm clicking in so fast I couldn't even finish reading the word LOL

i just googled hair porn and it wasn't that type of hair porn i was looking for! i think i would be cool with change the term to hair candy.

at the end of the day, we do have to be mindful of the words we make light of. i know i am going a little deeper than this thread, but i have s serious problem with someone making light of the word Rape. it burns my soul when i hear someone use it playfully. there is nothing about that word that is playful.

I am in full control of my sexuality. I can make it what I want, the women before me have saw to that. Porn is a part of society it's not going to dictate my behavior. Slinging words don't indicate a woman makes bad moral choices, she may just be having a good time making light. I wish we would understand we're so busy analyzing the "outside" factors we cannot see the weakness within. Porn is the least of black women's problems IMO.

I thought we were here cause we were all aiming for the common goal of healthy/long hair. We come here (well I do) as we've been scorned by other women in our society so we seek positive women to encourage us.
