What did you call 3c hair before 3c was invented?

In hair purgatory
tight 3b? i think if we use tight and loose to describe hair patterns i think it might make a wee bit more sense instead of making a whole new categories confusing everyone. for me things only got complicated when i heard of 3c...

before I even knew of the categories of hair I called mine frizzy curly! :lachen:
I believe that's the big difference between 3b and 3c hair...3b curls are much more defined and "smoother" compared to a 3c head of hair. If you comb out 3c hair while dry, it will resemble 4a hair and will stay that way until you wet it again.

I don't get the 3c thing either. It was invented on NC, I think, for people who didn't think they were 4a, but weren't 3b either(????) Or something like that. So, I would imagine that hair type was called 4a before 3c was invented.

basically it was lumped in with 3b. the original description of 3b was anything that wasn't 3a (straight hair that gets curlier as it grows longer) or 4a (afro-textured coffee-stirrer coils). but think about it... that's a BIG jump from 3a to 4a, and all you have is 3b in between?

i understand why 3c was suggested/invented, but it wasn't clarified well enough for me. there seems to be too much overlap between 3c and 4a which causes confusion for people like me. :drunk:

*i don't think 3b hair is more defined/smoother, just a bigger-sized coil. varies from person to person i suppose... :look:

i don't know napp and honestly don't care, and i'm not saying this with any disrespect or hostility whatsoever).

let's discuss the elephant in the room shall we?

there will be black folk hair.

there will be white folk hair.

i don't care if the "black" hair has (frizzy/nappy) curls the size of a giant grain silo and sat in the middle of their living rooms, folks will never really "get it" for reasons only known to themselves.

so there's a problem right off the bat.

what really needs to be done for folks who get hung up on the numerical/letter typing system (or would like to categorize themselves) is for a person knowledgeable enough in black hair to create a hair typing system specifically geared towards black hair, forget that 4 a/b category because as you see, it does nothing to fully describe the complexities of the many textures of black hair. in one single word, it's retarded, literally.

think about it, 1A-3B is very specific to a certain type of hair and does a pretty good job for most and now we have all afro textured aka black hair lumped into 2 measly categories :ohwell:. it's almost like andre said - ****, black hair ugh - toss them all into these 2 categories making out like it's some secret code for "bad hair".

of course there's LOIS and FIA but i think folks would have a better time (read: fun) with the letter/numerical type system.

Thankkkk U!!!!!!!!!!!

i appreciate your point LynnieB. I dont think some folk will ever get it no mater how simple or complicated it is. let me stop:deadhorse:

For me, the better question is what did I call hair types before I joined LHCF. LOL!!!

shoot, i think it was simpler back then. you had straight, wavy, curly, coily and kinky... and it could be thick or thin... you had fine or coarse strands. 'nuff said. :lachen:

Those were the days. I'm fixin to go back. My hair is curly and wavy. That's good enough for me.

Yep! Same here. In fact, that's I still generally see things that way...

Okay, this is true.

Before I joined LHCF, I thought of my hair as just "kinky". Hm....

I didn't know anything about hair typing until I joined the forum, so I wasn't even aware of 3b, 3c, etc.

ya know???

i have thick, coily hair. some parts are looser coils, some are tighter coils. that's all that matters. *** Andre and his stupid system :lachen:

a quote for the siggy is born!

This typing nonsense really makes me wish that we could offer suggestions in a thread and the mods could come up with a LHCF-SPECIFIC typing system. We could translate it into Andre's system as needed when talking to non-LHCFers based on our own interp of his system...but LHCF needs itss OWN typing system focused on everything "3b" and so forth. That way it is very specific. Our "1a" would be Andre's "3b" leaving tons of room to better identify our many textures.

Yes, yes, put your AK 47s down...I know we have a "kafubakajillion" textures...the point is to get much CLOSER to something that is more efficient than this pitiful 3c/4a/4b hogwash.
