How are you ladies rollersetting your hair: going up or down.

When I go to the Dominicans most of the time they roll it going up. But I know alot of people who rollerset going down "the regular way".

Do you find that one technique is better than the other? Do you get certain effects from one than the other? Which do you perfer and why?

I rollerset going up like the dominicans because it ends up giving me more space so the rollers are not crowded all over my head. I do think its better to roll down tho because i feel like roller is being supported by a section of hair which probably stresses the hair. However, if I roll going down, I just have too many rollers in my hair.

I get straighter roots when I roll up and the back dries better. But at the same time, I lose the lift that I would get from rolling down.

My rollers are rolled sideways so that they will have a spiral effect. I like rolled up also becuase i think it provides more body.

For those who rollerset going up, when you take the rollers out, don't you have a flip? How do you get it to curl the other way w/o of course the blow dryer n brush?

Usually your hair will wind around the roller so many times, that when you take it out, you won't be able to tell the difference as far as the ends are concerned. The ends will look like spiral curls. Depending on how many weeks I am into my relaxer, I'll go back over just the roots with my 1 inch flat iron. I find this easier to do when I roll up and forward.

My friend has shoulder length layered hair and I rollerset it for her this past weekend. I alternated rolling up and down. The ones in the front I rolled down and back. But the next row was up and forward and the next down and back. After it dried, I just seperated the curls with my fingers, but avoided combing through the ends. Then I used the handle of a rat tail comb to seperate the roots and hide the part lines. It just looked better and better as the day went on. I was so proud of myself!

I roll going down and sometimes sideways when I want the spiral look and with really small rollers. I haven't mastered rolling with bigger rollers so that I can wear my hair straight and bouncy.

I roll down. But I have noticed when I get a salon set, roller around the front edges go up. I will try this when I do my own set tonight.

Hey macherieamour, I was wondering do you roll all your hair up? I rollerset all the time, but I have always rolled down. Do you think this helps the drying time. I would like to rollerset twice a week and let it air dry but with magnetic rollers, it takes longer than 12 hours.

hi! I roller set going up becuase it takes up less space on my head which I guess increases drying time becuase all the roller fit under the dryer. I dont think the way they are position matter in terms of drying time tho. I could be wrong. The curl pattern is pretty similar. My picture in my signature is a pic of a fresh rollerset (rolled up). The curls fall pretty nicely. :D

The Dominican Salon I go to rolls it going up too. I like it that way b/c it keeps my ends off oy my clothes.I pin curl it that way too.

I'm confused. By up vs down, do you mean the direction you roll the roller or the pattern of how you put the rollers in. I thought you meant how you put the rollers in, but some of the posts seem to be talking about the direction the roller is rolled.

I roll all my rollers backward and I put them in going down. That gives me a lot of volume. Next time, I do my rollerset, I want to try rolling the rollers foward while still going down to see if that gets my roots straighter.

Could someone please explain the difference between rolling up and down? I saw the video someone posted...was he rolling up or down? I want to start rollersetting but I don't know the difference? How do you rollerset up vs. rollerset downward? (unfortunately I don't have a dominican salon out here so i've never experienced it.)

My desired rollerset look is straight at the top - and lots of body at the ends - thick, lush waves. How do I get that?

I never really thought to rollerset "up" and I find the discussion very interesting.
In my case, with a lot of hair, rollersetting down has for consequence having a lot of rollers deep in the neck which is not very pleasant as for the drying under the hood. I have to do a specific gym to have the bottom rollers drying properly
On the other hand, I am afraid that rollersetting "up" will produce the reverse impact with a lot of rollers on the forehead. I do not know if this is really better. I have an awful memory of some rollersets during my youth where my mother was putting rollers all around my face up to the eyes ...Additionally I have also to make sur that I still enter under the hood.
Will see, but probably worth the test

I do my rollers going down and there are enough good sized rollers to give me the body I am looking for. However I may try rolling up once I get my relaxer and see how that turns out (wrapping afterwards).

I want to try rolling my hair up next time instead of down, as I always do. Your set looks gorgeous in your pic, Macherieamour. What size rollers did you use?

I just checked your album and I love your hair!! I see the sizes you use now. I use the big green ones mainly because I'm hoping they dry hair faster. I have the gray ones though.

I don't wear my hair in a rollerset like you do and maybe I'll start. :yep: I usually remove the rollers and braid my hair in a braidout or put it up in an updo.

I normally rollerset going down, but after going to the Dominican Salon this week, I will rollerset it the same way they do----- going up.

He was doing what I call down and back. Except for the very first roller that he put in at the crown area. He rolled that one up and forward.

Thanks!!! I usually wear it like that but it usually only last a day or two. I will use a small brush and blow out the roots. The key is to blow the roots down and up. This is so hard to explain. I use the brush to pull the hair and blow dry down. Then flip that section over and blow dry up. This create the straightest roots and the hair retains its freedom of movement. After a few days, the curls will fall. So then I wrap it.

I dunno about others but I start with the mohawk and then roll the sides up. Takes a lot of practice :perplexed

What kind of brush and blowdryer do you use?

I have to check. Im on vacatioon but when I get back to philly I will post. I used a hard boar bristle and a pretty standard blow dryer. The key is to get one with a really narrow diffuser. I will post pics when I get back to philly :)

So you roll your hair up every night using the mohawk method? Are you using the same grey rollers? If so, how many rollers do you use for the mohawk? Thank you!

I wore my freshly washed hair in your style for Christmas and it looked very pretty! :) The only difference is that I had to leave my roots "as is" since I don't use heat. I did tie my hair down with a scarf to smooth the roots though. By rolling the hair up, my hair seems to fall closer to my scalp than when I roll the usual way. Thank you Macherieamour for sharing your method!

I am under the dryer now with my hair rolled "up" can't wait to see how it turns out. :)

Please let us know. I want to try this the next time I wash and set my hair. Did you roll all the hair going up or just the sides?

I rolled it all going up, the top front I rolled forward. It came out good. I will continue to use this method because the other way had my hair to voluminous and big.
