Interesting! I've never heard of rolling your hair up. I have always rolled my hair down, the "regular way."

Does anyone with shoulder length hair roll their hair upward, or does this technique work better for longer haired girls?

I've done it on shoulder length hair before, but only in the back. The rollers that were in front of the ear were rolled down in the traditional way.

What do you do with the rollers in the front and middle of the head?

Using the Mohawk as a starting visual:

The roller in the front, which would be the bangs are rolled forward towards the hairline. I put the hair on top of the roller and then roll. The one right behind that one would be rolled towards the nape.

Sometimes I alternate as well. If I just want to pick out the curls, this seems to make it easier to hide the part lines. It starts off with the same Mohawk and then I work my way East and West towards my hairline.

The roller in the front, which would be the bangs are rolled forward towards the hairline. I put the hair on top of the roller and then roll. The one right behind that one would be rolled towards the nape. The next one behind that one will go forward towards the hairline, the next one towards my nape. I do that all the way to the nape. It doesn't really matter if the last one is up or down. Then, on either side of the mohawk, there is a section of hair that sits between the mohawk and the ear. I section that portion of hair off and roll the same way that I did the mohawk. For the section of hair that runs from the ear to the hairline, I always roll the top one up. I like the way my hair lays at the roots when I comb it out. It doesn't have the rollerset hump on the sides, if I roll it that way. The next one is rolled down, and the last one is rolled up again.

I hope that made sense.

Thank you! I think I get it now!

I just did my rollerset today with all the rollers going up. I really like this way better than rolling down. I did not have parts in my hair from the rollers. My curls fell so nicely, like spirals almost. I will try alternating up and down next time.

I have just gotten pretty comfortable with the regular way. I haven't tried it the other way. I may try to roll it 'going up' as my NG gets thicker as a way to hide it with spiral curls.

I decided to do a test try by rolling my hair up instead of down. The roots came out so... straight. I'm 9 weeks post relaxer. Also, if you want the curls to fall the "normal" way after removing the roller you could roll the hair on your finger in the opposite direction. You'll have straight roots, and a curl that falls the way most of us are use to. Just thought I'd share that to see if it could be of some help.

okay.
my hairtype is 3b/c how do I know what works for me? Does using heat generally produce better results?

I think you really need to go by trial and error. For some people, their hair only looks good with heat, others complain that heat makes there hair look horrible. I have found that with my hair, I can air dry in magnetic rollers and get a better set than blasting my hair with the dryer on high. The highest temperature I like to use is low. When I set my hair on high under the hood. it tends to look and feel dry.

I agree with Ladylynn, Safina. I air dry in magnetic rollers either overnight or under a dryer on a cool setting (I stay away from heat). Magnetic rollers work best for me too.

I'm going to try rolling up next time. The Dominican salon I go to does this as well. I was just concered about a flip since I wouldn't be blowdrying my hair out like they do. But I see you ladies have had success with this method.

Ok, so I tried this method of rolling up the other night. I will say that I liked the results MUCH better than rolling downward. It eliminated the problems that I normally have, rolling my hair downward: huge, dented roots, and flyaway ends.

Instead, my roots were smooth, and my hair didnt flip upward, as i imagined. I will say that it took me longer to get all the rollers in- I found that i couldn't just throw the rollers in quickly, without my hair trying to dry on me. But I am sure the more I roll this way, the faster I will get at it.

Thanks for the tip!!!

I roll my hair down because it was the easiest way when I first learned. I want to start rolling up but will probably not start til after I relax because I dont want to change anything in my routine (even something simple like this) and mess my hair up because the ng wont agree with the new rolling technique. This wash I am going to try to roll my hair on large spiral rollers. I am going to put 3-5 of them in and roll horizontal. Kind of like pincurls but with the spiral set rollers. I want to see if my roots get straight this method because it is faster and easier. I will show pics when I do it (maybe tonight). Plus these are easier to sleep in than the magnetic ones.

I usually rollerset using the traditional method but right now as I am typing this I am sitting under the dryer with my rollers rolled up. It was hard at first for me to do it because it was a new technique so I had to spray water constantly to keep my hair wet but i like how neat my rollers look now whereas before they looked all bunched up around my neck.

Here I am 9 weeks post roots screaming for some taming, and I have never heard about rolling up... I rollerset down and back, which gives volume, but I can fit all my rollers well on my head... Next time I will have to try up and forward. Do you start at the front of the hairline and work back, or at the nape and go up?

I attempted rollersetting today, turned out wack :|

I tried at first with the Magnetics and I just couldnt get them taught, they were so loose... :(

I used self grips by scunci (sp) hair dried quicky and it did nothing to straighten my roots, I am about 8 weeks post :(

Im sorry, Khandi. Did you see the thread that Alexstin started? It had an excellent tutorial. Do you want me to bump it for you?

What kind of setting lotin do you use? I have been using Lottabody, but I want to try something different. I too roll my rollers going down, I get alot of body doing it that way and I have been for years. I may try rolling my hair upwards this week, thanks for the clarification
