I recently joined this board, upon looking through past posts it seems people had mainly relaxed hair maybe 10 years ago and today it seems people have gone natural.

Let's keep it friendly on the comments, as I'm just curious about numbers, attitudes the current trend and what you have learned.
 
Have had one (1) good experience with hair dye - when I got highlights done at Walmart, of all places.

They did a beautiful job, and the highlights looked BETTER as they faded!

I got compliments on them all the time even as they grew out, as they were done so beautifully. Those women listened about making it look relatively natural, and did separate colours, separate widths of strands (foil highlights) --all done in a way where my hair did not feel damaged afterwards! They also told me they were trying to do it in a way so that, as it grew out, there wouldn't be a stark demarcation-- which turned out to be true.
I've done bleach + manic panic erratically. That was okay, not the best since I was so bad at bleaching-- I basically just slapped it on in random sections. 'Touchups' were even worse, as I would slap on again, and not really take notice. Would end up bleaching everything multiple times, to no avail, and then Manic Panic would minimize the look of damage...

I've dyed my hair with box hair dye TWICE in the past, and regretted -both times, a Garnier box dye, DARK BROWN--
which was rated HIGHLY on makeupalley for YEARS - let me tell you, those women get a lot of things right but not this.


I also recently (in early March i think) followed the recommendation of a girl on youtube who had very silky hair, touting clear hair glosses - she used L'oreal.

Well, again, major regret (that preceded a major trim-a-thon which was uneven while trying to maintain length)...
Clear glosses by such brands (I went with ion and followed the instructions on the box + ladies at Sally's) SUCK man.. SUCK.. they ruin your hair. They follow a similar principle to normal
hair dye, and they do the exact opposite of what they say they will.

I should have tried cassia but I didn't want to wait for shipping.....

Never relaxed/etc but the dyes.. oh yeah. Dyes are evil. Except for the ladies at Walmart, they were amazing, whatever damage there was, was not noticeable, and the highlighted hair felt good too, not dry or fragile.
They did it on top of previously henna'd hair, and no issues.. they also didn't charge much compared to other places.

I was relaxed from the age of 5 until I big chopped at the age of 23. I've been on and off this board for 12 yurrs lol :yep: I have been completely natural since 2011. I never knew what my natural hair looked like until I went natural. As a child, my hair was still always long, but was always in braids or ponytails and bows or beads (with the foil on the ends, remember those days?:grin: ) so I literally never knew I had curls.

I love my natural hair! It took me a while to learn how to care for it, because my family has a more kinkier texture for the most part, so they thought I had heat damage. I just recently learned how to properly incorporate grease back into my life, so I guess I'm STILL learning!

Grateful for this board for guiding me from waist length relaxed to natural and WL-HL(a few times at WL now!) :lachen:

I have been an on again, off again natural since Fall 2001 (oh HU, you will always have a place in my heart).
My biggest hair setbacks were from dealing with command teams that didn't respect my hair texture (USA), trying various techniques and chemicals to keep my edges smooth, and my diet.
I'm currently growing out a professionally applied ginger color. Whether it is professionally applied hair dye or drugstore hair dye, my hair strands will thin out over time. It isn't worth it.
My hair is natural, multi-textured, and neck length. It seems the longer it grows, the more it shrinks.

No one below 18 should get a relaxer or any chemical hair product or service as your hair is not mature
 
When I came to the board, I was relaxed and color treated.

I've been natural for I think 13.5 years (whatever it says in my sig) and I dye my hair.

In the past year or so, the greys have really been taking over so I'm thinking of letting them grow free. Currently setting up some sinking funds for some heating tools that will allow me to dry and straighten my hair quickly.

Also dabbling in some ayurvedic recipes. I've made a bottle of rice water but haven't used it yet.
 
This wasn't mentioned in the poll - but wigs - after a few months and only a handful of wears... >_> i feel uncomfortable.
it sucks as i had spent a ton on them. Also recently, seeing a gentleman I know (he is elderly, and a cancer patient)....
he was wearing a mild, natural style of a greyed wig, of a similar quality as mine.

Even from far away, it looked so in your face + obvious. Not in a bad way, as he has real hair loss, but I don't want people to NOTICE, just sort of gloss over it if anything.
I tried to wear it tonight to hospital,
to cover over my greased hair but ended up not being able to.... >_>
instead, wrapped my hair with a pretty scarf.

Does anyone else get this way? I wanna use them as they are cute but this self-conscious feeling is NOT on. i feel better wearing scarves!
 
@bzb1990 For me, the style of wigs I choose and the way I like to apply and style them makes them high maintenence so I really have to be in the mood to get into it. I was recently in wig mode and by the tail-end of it, I was just tying it down with a decorative scarf- whether worn as a head wrap (my choice) or headband style (like the wave of headband wigs that has come back around).

Maybe you could build your comfortability by using scarves to disguise the demarcation between the wig and your hair, and get some use out of them.

Is your own hair natural or are you transitioning?
 
@bzb1990 I second what @GGsKin said. Use scarves of headbands to hide the demarcation line of the wig. I also use High-end wigs (lacefront) and have to be in the mood to wear them. If I do wear it, it stays on my head for a week; for I'm not going back and forth applying that thing, lol. It is too much work. If I could get away with wearing a headband, I would.

I have a wig I rarely use it but I always get ones with a fringe so cannot tellid like a real hair one that would match my own relaxed hair.
 
Mine are mainly lace front ones from Estetica I don't think it's the hairline so much as general density .. nobody has hair that dense you know..
Even though I thin mine out with thinning shears

ty fr suggesting that though will do that henceforth.
 
When I came to the board in 2009ish, I had finally decided to transition to natural hair. This board has hung in with me through thick and thin. I have been a loose natural for ten years and decided to loc my hair in July 2020. Although there is not a lot of info on this board about locked hair, I still love to know about healthy hair practices.

What density did you get? If I order full lace, I like to keep mine looking 'natural' by going for 130-150. A few yrs ago, I ordered a kinky-straight silk top that was way thicker than I was comfortable with at the time. It felt so obviously wiggy, especially compared to my natural density but got so many compliments, it was funny to me.

It is natural but I bought them after ppl basically pointed out I was balding ....
or said my hair was ugly mainly my dad (lots of hair related complexes in my brain! I admit)
randomly balding is happening a lot in my family with women..and children!!
so I thought it was my turn and was permanent.. I got wigs to prepare
It must have been stress-related though, as the hairline and bald patches began filling in when my life became less brutal and I did a lot of therapy.
Also eating too much dairy and meat on my part ...
as they inject animals with so much... maybe it messes up susceptible ppl's hormones.
My grandma learned about how things are now for animals (she used to have her own farm and grew up in a village) and connected that to issues in our family as we eat a lot of meat and dairy. So she forbade any of my girl cousins from buying any milk, meat or eggs unless it was organic. my cousins also ate a lot of Burger King since I can remember. The older people rarely or never ate that and they all have full heads of hair.. my grandma has always had her hair to waist length and trims it to keep it there!!

I did not see them in recent years so idk if the situation improved by now

Yesterday I read about how meat with pollutants can ruin polar bears health and hunters (humans) health ...
near Northern Canada and Arctic. It showed up in physical things eg They even saw cases of pseudohermaphrodism in the animals, which had not been documented before.

So I think it confirms my grandma's suspicions about hormones n sudden hair loss in our family for younger women and some kids

They don't list any such options. Maybe the place I got them from (wigs.com or wigoutlet.com) is unaware.

Or maybe the brand does not disclose. Plz message me a link if you can!! For where you got yours. I'm curious.
Funnily, the most natural one I got is from etsy (OrnaRey) and the cheapest from all of them.
 
TL;DR: I am texlaxed

Hair story if interested:

As a kid and teen I was natural and wasn't allowed to have a relaxer. I got my hair pressed (hot comb) sometimes as a kid and was a teen I wore it flat ironed. I didn't like my natural hair at all back then.

I had a relaxer when I started to lurk the board in 2006. Thanks to these ladies I was able to grow healthy relaxed hair from a NL to a little past APL. I didn't let it grow longer than that because I wanted to go natural.

About 2009 or so I did the BC, went natural, and learned how to love my natural texture. I even had locs for a couple of years.

Fast forward to the present I had been rocking an almost bald tapered blonde twa. I texlaxed this fall because I was bored lol. Now I decided to see if I could grow my hair to MBL before I get bored again lol. My hair is about ear length now so I'm starting fresh. Idk if I am going to stay texlaxed or not....we'll see.
