I've Made the Decision to Transition To Natural

Whew, it's been a while since I've started a thread over here in the Hair Care Forum!

Well, as of Monday, I've made the decision to transition to natural. I haven't seen my natural hair since I was about 10 years old! And, honestly, I don't remember anything about my hair except for it being very fine and sandy brown with a little hit of red.

I have no idea where to start or where to begin. I don't know when or if I'll do the BC. I'm going to just take it one day at a time. I'm looking forward to the journey and pray that I will make it through those rough patches.

My last touch up was on December 5, 2009. So that puts at almost 11 weeks post relaxer. The longest I've gone is about 20-24 weeks and it's at that mark that I give in to the creamy crack.

Here's my semi-plan:
I will wash and deep condition once a week
Wear protective styles such as rollersets
I plan to at some point weave it up at especially at the point where I can't take the two textures.
I normally use Aveda products...not sure if they're going to work once I'm fully natural.

I'll try to take some pictures of my hair tonight.

Congrats on your decision!! Sounds like you have a good plan.

Remember to keep your hair strong and moisturized. (Protein-moisture balance.)

Rollersets are more low manipulation; Weaves are fine for protective styling. So are braid extensions, cornrows under a wig, etc.

Thanks loolalooh. I need to check my product stash and concoct a protein-moisture deep conditioning treatment.

Wow. I always think if you've been on LHCF that long and have not transition, your chances are greatly diminish. Good luck with your new hair journey.

Thanks Janet! When did you transition and how long did it take?

I began transitioning at the end of 2004 and it took me about 2 years to fully transition without doing a BC...My hair was a couple of inches below shoulder length and I wanted to retain as much growth as possible. I started out allowing my (at the time) hair dresser to hot comb my new growth:nono:- not a good idea, because although my hair could definitely handle it- I knew that over the course of my transition- the hot comb would not be my friend...Any more questions, I love to be of help...lol

Thanks for offering your assistance, I will most definitely take you up on that offer. Wow 2 years to transition without a BC! I hope I can make it that long, although I don't see my self doing a BC anytime soon. My hair is about APL and I really don't want to go too short too soon. But, if I get tired of the two textures you best believe I will do the BC and weave it up!

Congrats on your decision! It's a hassle, but my hair has never been healthier.

Thanks CB! I'm sure it is a hassle, but well worth it!

Congrats on your decision, hope all goes well :D

Thanks CCBB!

Congratulations and good luck! In '07 I decided to go natural and I've always been happy with that decision. Your plan sounds good.

Congratulation Divinefavor I just finish 15 months transitions no bc just dusting. Please visit the transitioner support threads and the BC so you can learn from others.

If I can do it, I truly believe anyone can. You'll do well. Your Aveda products should work very well for you. Holla if you need me!

Congrat DivineFavor! I'm in the trans myself and DC have been a great help for me. Castor Oil is very good too.

Just take it slow and remember half wigs are your friends! :yep:

Bronze!!!! Thank you so much for the encouragement and when I get back on the Egglet bandwagon, I'm sure I'll experience some good growth! I haven't been to the Health Store this week. I should do that on my lunch break today to get some Wheat Germ and Wheat Germ oil!

I have made the decision to transition also. My last relaxer was December 4th. It's been ok so far but I have been wearing my hair straight. We will see how the summer goes..lol

Congrats on your decision! I know you'll do well, and remember there's plenty of good help and support all around you. Take your plan and go forward, we're with you all the way!

Hello there! I've been natural 11 years and never looked back. I love my hair and it's longer and healthier than it ever was with a relaxer.

Aveda products will work on your natural hair. Damage Remedy was my favorite, but I know natural girls who used other products that worked really well. I pressed my hair when it was half and half, but after a while I got sick of it and cut the relaxed ends. That left me with chin length natural hair. As long as I can make a puff, it was all good.

You didn't ask advice, but I am going to give it. Try to stay on the forums and keep getting help. I was so frustrated at first but I eventually found a routine/product roster for me. It takes some doing since most people still have relaxers, but in the last 10 years I've seen so many things change. Keep plugging until you find what works for you. It's totally worth it.
