Would you do it?

A really nice woman from Dudley's approached me and gave me her card yesterday. She asked me a couple questions about my hair... Then asked if I'd be willing to be a hair model. I was flattered and thought it would be so much fun! But now that I think about it... and how close I am to my hair goals.... I don't know if I should commit.

We didn't discuss cutting my hair. She mostly asked how I felt about color. I've never used color before... but I'm in my early 20s so I wouldn't mind doing anything non traditional since I don't have a conservative job.

Nevertheless, I gave her my number. But now I'm going back and forth about whether I should risk my hair goals for something fun.

Woah, that's a tough one. I'd have a chat with her and maybe look at work they've previously done.
Eta: seen as i'm transitioning now, i would let them big chop me. But if i was fully either natural or relaxed. They definitly wouldn't be able to colour it. They wouldn't be able to cut it...actuatlly it would depend on the money, because i'm 22 and my hair would grow back. I don't know i'd be in a kufuffule

My answer is no, Hair models are usually worked on by trainee hairdressers.

I'm not being some newbie stylist's Guineapig

I think if you got somethings in writing about what they are and are not allowed to do to your hair sure. Also have a clause added in that if you noticethe health of your hair is suffering you have a right to refuse any and all jobs.

Also, if you are serious ask to meet the other hair models the ones who have been doing it for a year or more and see what their hair is looking like

Congrats on even getting the offer!

NOPE, not ever.
I used to do a little model/extra work for commercials and my hair went through hell.
They used too much heat and styling products...AND they loved to tease it :perplexed

I don't trust anyone with my hair.

It depends. I did it when my hair was short and I didn't mind hair cuts and hair color. I also knew it would still be suitable for the professional work environment.

ETA: The stylists were top notch.

Coloring my hair anything but black is negative.

BUT, being in my 20's (If I were you, we both know I am not in my 20's :) ) and knowing my whole life is ahead of me, Hair grows back. When opportunity knocks be sure to listen ;)

I was asked to be a hair model and agreed. But, when I went to actually sign the contract, I declined. Your hair is at the mercy of the stylist. Which means they can do whatever they want with your hair. Is is for a hair show or demonstration? This would be key info to know. Because if it is for demos then you may be okay because it is usually a highly skilled stylist who performs demos. But if it is for a hair show, they do hairstyles and demos for "shock" value. Meaning that they may take someone with long hair and cut it short or do some type of drastic color change. So, if you decide to do it make sure its something that you want to do. And ask plenty of questions.

I said yes, but the reality is it just depends. I have been asked already to be a "hair model' to teach the japanese hair straightening thing twice i think, but once i researched it i knew i was not interested in that. Lol, i just got 2 strand twist and my picture is going up on a website, does that count? I would proably just stick to accomplishing my hair goals if you feel anyway about it.

I was asked to be a hair model and as great as it sounded thanks to my mom I eventually declined and it was the right decision. Many of the contracts include a portion that states that you are forgoing the right to your own image indefinitely which is troublesome and they can pretty much do anything to your hair in the name of doing a cool "style". I'm glad I declined.

You're right! I forgot to mention that she said it would be for demonstrations to show others how to create a particular style/look.

ETA: Thanks for sharing your personal experiences ladies!

sure. i'd love to have an audience bigger than lhcf when i wanna showcase my hair. i guess i'd be fine with coloring and cutting, since i've bc'd twice. i still look pretty with short hair so whenever the modeling ended, i'd just do a bc and grow my healthy hair back. ♥

I would do it in a heartbeat, i'm in the johnson's contest, and working on getting headshots to sign up with a few agencies I found that deal with hair modeling.

The down side is sometimes they want to cut and color, i'm not down for a cut, but not all hair modeling jobs require it, if it's not something your down for you don't have to take the job, you can pick and choose.

Good luck try it out you might enjoy it.

Yes, but I refuse to let them cut or trim my hair. They either work wit it like it is, (I would do an all natural color with no ammonia/peroxide), or they can leave me alone! I've worked tooo hard to get this length back.

I'm terrified of stylists working on my hair (I've had BAD experiences) so, no. I would be a wig model, though.

Congratulations on the opportunity!

Lol, I would like to be a hair model but I don't think they'd have me. It would have to involve no cuts, no colour, no heat, protective styles only, no harsh combing and I'd have to apply any relaxers myself. I'm pretty sure they'd cancel the contract before I would!

i voted maybe. every hair modeling job i've been interested in and then had to decline is because the pay wasnt enough for the type of damage they were wanting to do.

whether it be bleaching, dying, cutting, loads of hear, hair pieces added in... it was never worth it.

but with the right job or for the right pay i'd do it

No, not at all. I see what they do to peoples hair on tv and it looks to be very damaging. I work to hard to take care of my hair, to have some one to jack it up.

So I did some research regarding hair modeling

Disadvantages To Being A Hair Model
You will most likely have no say in how your hair is cut, colored or styled. In some cases damage can occur to your hair that may involve long term growing out periods. If you are a hair model at a professional show or for a platform artist you may be required to commit to an extended period of time for practice sessons as well as the actual show.

Warning
If you are the type of person who is very attached to the color or length of your hair, this is not the right work for you. Avoid being a hair model if you already feel feel sad as a hairstylist trims your split ends. A hair model often has her appearance drastically changed. Some models don't even recognize themselves in the mirror after returning from a modeling gig. Hair models must have an open mind when they receive a modeling gig. You must be willing to have your hair cut, chopped, colored and designed as the hairstylist desires. A hairstylist will experiment with your hair and try out strange new styles. It is best to be prepared for anything. Furthermore, don't expect your wallet to fatten up choosing these gigs. Hair models do not receive large amounts of money

Okay I know that when "damage" was mentioned I should have been scared away... I guess I just wasn't surprised. But when I read about how they do demonstrations for other stylists and how they have "practice sessions" with hair models.... well y'all should have seen my face!

I'm no longer interested... but man... if I had met this lady back in my relaxed days I would have done anything. I didn't care about cutting or getting trims.

before LHCF, I probably would've done the hair modeling thang b/c I was oblivious to damage. I use to let any stylist cut, color, whatever. Now I'm so obsessed with healthy hair, there's NO way! Not for any amount of money. LOL

I would agree to do a hair "experiment" but only if it involved 24 hr. moisturization, frequent washing and DC'ing with steam, and nightly scalp massages with a growth aid, and no cutting. Then I'd sign a contract.

Hair modeling is awesome. I have only had one bad experience. Most of the hair modeling I do- they don't want to cut or color my hair. Most places looking for AA hair models usually won't press abt cutting because they know how we are about length. I also have never been a hair model and had to sign a contract signing my (hair) life away....I tell people upfront what I am and am not willing to do. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do...and if they really want to use your hair--Im sure they will still pick you and only do what you ask. However, You have to be somewhat open to styling otherwise the stylist/product gets nothing out of you being a hair model. Also if you get paid thats a good incentive...some pay in product..some just pay in getting your hair styled for free. I would suggest to find out all the details--is it for school (as in a student doing it), is it for a class (as in the teacher is doing it), is it going to be for a hair show, is it for advertisement etc...that way you can get a better understanding. I have had great hair modeling experiences, besides 1 lol- but that was my fault- I didn't check her stats.

I'd do it in a heart beat. My hair is already short, so I have nothing to lose (literally). Hell, if they wanted to shave me bald I wouldn't flinch. I've been thinking of cutting it all of anyway.

If you would've asked me the same thing 2 years ago I would've thrown a fit at the suggestion.

I would :yep: I did think twice when I read some of the earlier comments in here about damage and stuff, but if I could have some say in what they do, and really trust they don't ruin my hair, then I'm all for it. :)

I said maybe. <it depends on what they want to do to my hair. Now im not down for a cut but maybe in a couples of years i will, so i will thik about it

ive done it a bunch of times when i was younger...just know what your getting into..as in exactly what will be done to your hair

i knew the stylist...so i wasnt worried about damage...
