I don't OP, means to be negative or mean, she is just asking an honest question. I do believe it is rooted in ignorance; however.

I do think that ethnicity plays a part in hair growth. For example, I have a cousin that is mixed Asian, Native American and Black. Her hair literally grows about 2 inches per month. Native Americans and ESPECIALLY Asians are known for having hair that grows very fast. Edited to say that I read that somewhere a while ago. Their hair supposedly grows faster than white people's hair as well.

I do think maybe people think "mixed people" can grow long hair, simply because they are retaining the growth. Silky or straighter textures of hair are less prone to breakage therefore it may appear that the hair is actually growing at a much faster rate, when it reality it may be average growth (1/2 inch per month or 6 inches a year) but not breaking off.

I know some people won't like this question, but are some of yall mixed. When I say mixed I mean maybe 1/4 asian/white..or something other than black. I think all of us know that this makes a major difference in hair growth. I don't really think it's right to give people false hopes. Just a question.

:nono:.....
Its better for you
to learn by observations
and educate yourself first..
before writing this..
I see you probably still
have belief in the stereotypical
that have 12% of extra this and that
will increase hair growth...

I can sympathize with the OP, since I (and maybe others) felt the same way for such a long time. Without this board and Cathy Howse, I would still be stuck in the same mindset. It took me a minute to absorb everything!

Give her time, she'll get it, too!

^^Yes genes have something to do with it, I wouldn't say ethnicity though. I'm a slow grower, or at least I consider myself so, but Southernbella (she's a member here, she's black) on the other hand, her hair grows really fast imo.

Seriously AGG, if you feel that strongly about it, why did you join the forum. What's the point if you have such set beliefs?

That's what i'm trying to figure out. How you gonna come join this board and be close-minded about hair care practices?

Just end your membership and go back doing what you were doing.

Retention,Retention,Retention!!!

It just takes more work for some to retain length.....

Anyway, I'm just black but I've never had a problem growing long hair. As an adult I've let it grow past BSL twice and both times I found it to be more work(didn't know what I know now) so it was easier to keep it cut back.
Half of it is internal and the other half is maintenance. I know white people who's hair never grow healthily past their shoulders.

I'm in no way fashion or form mixxed. But I swear the longer my hair gets, the more I can pass for Irish, Sweden, White, ANYTHING BUT BLACK! lol You know people never want to believe you are not mixxed AND you have longer. **** puh lease. You'll be cast off for being a bonafide liar. Specially in Mississippi.

But nope. I am totally proud of my heritage and it doesn't involve anything but African American backgrounds that I know of

Yes, her question is rooted in ignorance. To be ignorant simply means that you don't have knowledge or are unaware of a certain subject. A lot of us are ignorant to many facts and not just about hair. Now, if she wants to be enlightened all she has to do is take the advice of other posters who have given great information.

Or she can remain ignorant. It is a choice.

I don't think she was trying to negative or mean at all, I was just correcting her mistaken notions.

There is a slight difference in hair growth rates (according to Loreal anyway). But, if someone grows 2in a month, it's not just because of race. They are abnormal compared to the bulk of humans on this earth.

Just because one or a few Asians/Whites/etc have an abnormally high growth rate, doesn't mean all of them do. The owner of Shescentit (I forget her name on the board) has a ridiculously high growth rate and I don't see anyone else assuming all black people have a high growth rate just because of her.

Instead of making sweeping generalizations or using our limited experiences as a foundation for categorizing a whole group of people, it would be nice if we used science or research to provide some facts.

There's another article that is posted on this board a lot about hair growth, I think it was in the Journal of Cosmetic Science. If anyone has the link, please post it.

I know when I was waist length white women were like how did your hair get that long:rolleyes:. So many of them were frustrated with that fact that they couldn't grow it past their chin or shoulders and that a black women surpassed them something:ohwell:.

Just from the outside looking in I can see where OP is coming from, but once do the research and implement good hair care you find out there's more beneath the surface.

AGG, hey gurl! Its nice to see newbies posting!

To answer the question, ummm maybe? Both my parents are biracial. I can honestly say that it has little to no affect on our hair growth rate. There are many women here with hair waaaaaaaaay kinker than mine who bc'ed (big chopped, what some relaxed women in tranition to natural do to have 100% natural hair), years after me and have much longer hair than myself. It honestly has nothing to do with how "mixed" you are or are not, hair is hair and it grows! How you keep it on your head is a whole new post.

So when thinking about haircare and growing your hair long, think retention, because your hair (unless its some medical reason) will ALWAYS GROW!

got it?

Wow what a nasty tone, don't be so angered or defensive chile. I've read that Asians and Indians hair grows faster than other races including white people. I don't know WHERE I read it but it's what I read.

I don't recall ever saying that I was close minded. It was a simple question, and if you don't care to answer it then don't. Also I don't believe you have a right to suggest/tell anyone to end their membership, unless your name is printed on my credit card statement, which it is not. I do not think any of my post were denying the effectiveness of ANYONE hair care practices, it was simply stating that Black women have more rituals, than other races(that I have witnessed). I seriously doubt that anyone has never asked themselves the same question, before or while being a member of this forum.

I should change that. I do think it's rooted in ignorance. I don't think it's coming from a bad place.

I wasn't being nasty, angry or defensive at all. I really didn't know it came across that way. My bad. Seriously.

I posted a link that said Asian people's hair grows the fastest, but in comparison it's not that much faster than anyone else's. And I know there's another article about it somewhere as well so I'll post it when I find it.

Have a look at the Long Hair Community forum. They are a forum mainly made up of caucasian women. http://www.longhaircommunity.com/

They adopt similar practices such as pre pooing, co washing, oils, hair rinses. So we're not the only ones who are into the whole hair ritual thing.

It makes no sense to me that you have been lurking since last year and still making those kinds of statements.

As far as rituals? There are MANY women on here who keep it VERY simple and you should/would know that if you stuck around and dug deeper.

Yeah i asked myself the same questions until i joined this board, then let go of my ignorance, and RESEARCHED.

Where have you been living because I am black african My family is Black African No one as of yet in my immediate family has married OUT of our community B'H and we All have long hair from straightest to the so-called nappiest. So this whole thing about being mixed to have hair is a fallacy a myth. My hair grows like a weed. So does my niece who has like 5b hair okay so just hang around and get some good points from the lovely ladies here on the site

Okay this makes sense to me. I will say that from what I've seen, 95% of the black women I've seen with long hair were Biracial/mixed,(however you choose to put it). The other 5% have been growing their hair for 5 plus years. I think it's way easier for non-blacks to grow and keep their hair. It really isn't fair.

I'm glad you are here. Hopefully, this will Re-Educate you to alot of the preconceived notions you have/had about Black Women (and probably Black People in General).

Hopefully, this will prompt you to read everything you can, become an Active Participant and begin to Learn. If you are looking for growth and retention. If you are here for any other reason.....:ohwell:

People perish for a lack of Knowledge. And in all your getting: please get an understanding.

Well since I just became a paying member, I haven't been able to ask that question..that would explain the time frame. I'm not on here everyday, nor do I know anyone on here personally, or had the means to get know them, that's why I asked. Some people are acting like a said, "yall mixed, I don't care what yall say, case closed". In my experience that's what I have seen and been taught. I guess I will contact those who haven't been straight up RUDE ask them about their hair journey.

Whew, good thing all you lovely patient ladies are here to answer these...questions(?)

I was just gonna post TROLL and keep it moving...

That's what I was gonna do :look:

I wish you well on your journey....

I'm stuck somewhere in between SL and APL. So my hair isn't all that long, but to answer your question, I am not mixed.

I think the tone may have come off that way...but hey that's what happens when you have to infer inflection, tone of voice, and body language from type.

Anyway, I hope you take some time to read, research, and ask questions. You really can have long hair, if that's what you want, you just may have to work a little harder for it than the next person.

Also, realize everyone doesn't have "rituals". Some people just cowash and go on about their lives (GoingNatural comes to mind) and have really long hair. It doesn't have to be complicated and difficult so don't feel like you're doing something wrong if you decide to take the simple route.

Here is my fotki http://public.fotki.com/Soun/ (no style pics just lenghts pics)

and ask me any questions you want, I'm natural 4b

I'm mixed and if it was so easy for me to grow my hair I definitely wouldn't be spending three to five hours of my day on here instead of studying :ohwell:

I don't think asking a simple question is being a troll, it's called being curious. Some of you "ladies" need to follow the model, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all" then KEEP IT MOVING

You stated in your original post that being mixed makes a major difference in hair growth and that it's not fair to give people false hope. How did you think we, a black (primarily) hair forum would respond to these words?

Sorry if you felt that some of us were being rude but real talk, we have heard this over and over and over and over again so it just becomes old, you know?

This board has a huge wealth of information that will likely change the way you think and feel about your hair if you give it and us a chance. :)

Good luck and i promise, if you really dig in here and READ the info posted and talk w/ some of the ladies you will discover that your hair will pleasantly surprise you with time and patience.
