My hair is so fine the weight of extensions always caused my hair to break. I never had growth success with extensions. I do well without!

My hair is 4A, fine too. I currently have individual braids. This is my first time wearing them. I'm really praying and hoping things turn out right.

my hair grows at the same rate with or without braids. however, braids allow me to retain teh length that i have acheived much better than leaving my hair out or any other protective method.

i am a C&G girl all the way!

My hair grows better without extentions. They seem to cause me some breakage no matter how hard I try tlc. That's why I decided to leave braids and sew-ins alone. I wear wigs and half-wigs as my protective styles.

Same here.

i grows good with them but i lost mt temples:wallbash:so now i am not useing any now. but my hair is growing and my temple are comeing back i can take care of my ends better now with my own hair in braids i going to do this for a year:yep:

im curious to know, are people losing hair with extenstions because they go get their hair done in a salon, or because they are doing it themselves?

Whenever i have done it myself, I ALWAYS end up growing pretty well. The only problem is I cant wash it because my braids unravel (hair is too soft). I cant do individual braids it doesnt stay in my hair. I can only do sew-in's, and they usually only last for about 2 weeks before I have to wash and redo.

I didnt poll, because braids just keep you from manipulating your hair. I does not make your hair grow better. It just helps retain growth.

I feel you Shine-On. My hair grows better without extensions also. I go through the same thing when I wear weaves and extensions. My scalp seems to be extra sensitive to kanekalon and synthetic hair, but I continuosly try to wear them to give my hair a break only to end up with a itchy and sore scalp. I just took out some flat twists that was twisted with kanekalon hair and the ends twisted up in a ball at the top. I tried to wear them for 3 weeks and dug a bobby pin in between the parts everyday to scratch my itchy scalp. I'm pretty sure I lost hands full of hair when I washed it out. My scalp loves to breath and be freshly washed several times a week. Even human hair seems to not quite agree with me. Phony ponies are the best that I can do when it comes to weaves and long as its not too tight.

Do you ever soak the hair first in vinegar to remove the coating? I did this and I haven't had any itching or irritation.

I did not vote and let me tell you why. I just noticed, it helped me grow my hair back but my hair is VERY thin. I think the extensions have been pulling out hairs and now my hair is quite thin, thinner than it was.

Yes, but I use a full lace wig. Every other saturday which is about 2x a month I wash my hair condition it and trim it if it needs it. Then I braid it up and put on my wig. I like it b/c I don't have to wear outdate box braids or risk stress to my hair follicles with tight sew ins or glue.

My hair grows when i leave it alone- so if I can get twist extensions to get me through the brutal winter months and done by someone who understands no tension for African American Hair it works

I don't think it makes much of a difference for me....when I wear braids the growth is just more noticeable. I still wash my hair and moisturize when I have braids.

I would say yes, because if retention is key, I can't think of a better way to retain my growth and keep it moisturized at the same time.

my hair grows faster with a weave, but at the same time, my hairline breaks off and it is damaged when i take the weave out... so its a catch 22... :ohwell:

The only problem after wearing extentions once you hair gets long taking it out can be a nightmare. I had to start wearing wigs for protective styles because my hair had become too long for weaves and weaves are too expensive to take out every month.

Me too. My hair does not grow well with braid extensions - the ends get trashy because as soon as I wash the hair, they start to show through the braids and the stylist keep trimming them off so I end up with shorter hair. My hair grows nicely with weave but I can only keep the weave in for 2-3 weeks so it's too expensive for me to maintain. DC, shampooing and co-wash per week seem to work better for me - more moisture, thickness and growth.

I've noticed that I retain more thickness and length without extensions.

I think definitely with- even my hairline (widow's peak) grows in better- but I have now learned its only my tried and true hair dresser of 10 years that doesn't mess with my hairline. Pre -lhcf she grew me out to full shoulder length I just kept cutting and it was extremely dry from bleaching and no regular DCs...now I know better -I'll be alternating her braids with my full lace front till I make APL hopefully this year:yep:

Without...extensions are no good for my hair..tried it 2 times in my life ..damaged my hair both times. I 'll take the natural road thank you.

I had my first sew-in this summer for about 8 weeks. I was so excited because i could see all the new growth and I just knew my hair was going to have visible growth. Well in the process of washing my hair which I did over the tub( WORST MISTAKE EVER) my hair got so matted and tangled together I lost handfuls of hair. Needless to say I was just grateful that my hair was the same length as it as before I got the extensions, but I saw absolutely No Growth. So I guess it was my mistake, but I'll just stick with the natural way.

:yep: I totally agree that my hair grows the same rate with or with out. Only benefit it give me is less manipulation of own hair and longer relaxer stretch periods. One time I went 14 weeks (longest I have ever done in my life) It took me two days to relax all my new growth.

It's been so long - I think that my hair grows and retains about the same with extensions, but it thins my hair out....

Basically all my life, especially since going natural, wearing braids and sew-in weaves really helped me grow my hair.

I wore a sew-in all summer 2 years ago, and my hair finally started touching my shoulder after it got permed. (It was very uneven though, and I don't remember why, but I don't think it broke from the weave)

And now, as a natural, wearing braids and kinky twists is helping me get through the awkward length stage. I spray my hair everyday with coconut/jojoba oil, water, and may be some infusium. I wash it every week, and the braids help me have easy access to my scalp to apply some growth aids and capsazin.

The only problem I've had it matting, but I know I can prevent that by sleeping in conditioner over night so the braids will slide right off. Still, I'm going to teach myself how to do kinky twists so I can do them and take them out often enough not to see matting.
