Which technique do you use? For those that have tried various techniques, why do you perfer one technique over the other? Are the results of one really that much different from the other?

I braid 4 single braids. My braid outs come out fluffier and more similar to my natural texture, so I like them better than twistouts.
I forgot to say I do them on dry hair and put a little oil or conditioner on them when they're done.

I do box 14 box braids because my hair is so darn thick. Its the only way that I can get each section smooth with my denman.

I do single twist outs usually, my friend did me some twists going back like cornrows and it lasted along time so I will definitely try that method again.

at least 10 flat twists all the way back for a twistout...

6 big plaits for braid out...

both on full on wet hair

I do box braids for braidout and single twists for twistouts. I haven't mastered cornrowing or flat twisting yet.

I am working on doing it myself, but when I want the "crinkle" affect, I opt for the flat twists (going back like cornrolls). My hair is typically wet, and a little setting lotion is used, and the ends are slightly curled with perm rods or sometimes just regular rollers with clips. This works better for me than cornrolling, b/c my hair is thick and I get better manageability and motion with the twist sets.

Always cornrolls. 8-10 straight back. For me it's the quickest easiest and gives the best, most consistant definition. If I want a curlier crinkly effect I braid wet, I braid dry if I want it more wavy. Individual braids take too long, I would need too many and I have to do too much separating and fluffing to make it lay right and hide the parts, frizzing my hair in the process. Twists are'nt tight enough to give me the desired effect unless they've been in for a few days. I commend those that can make 4 or 5 big plaits and call it a day. That wouldn't do nothing to my hair

I haven't done braid nor twist outs since being natural. If I do, I'll prolly do box braids or single twists.

When I was relaxed, I did cornrows & single flat twists.

Well duh! look at your hair! Must be nice.

My ideal braidout is your avatar

I'm just the opposite, I haven't done a braidout since I texturized. Not really necessary now as I can wash and go and get the same effect.

Thank you for posting this thread! I will try out all the tips I see here. You guys are the best! I a m currently on a twisting challenge. I'm gonna learn to twist my hair or braid! I don't wanna be paying others to jack up my hair.

When long/relaxed: cornrows in front/sides; box braids in back :yep:

Now short/natural: definitely cornrows

I use 6-8 flat twists (back like cornrows) and put a perm rod on the end if I want a tight curl in the back. Or I wait until it's dry and use my steam rollers to curl the ends. I always put castor oil on my ends and a little leave in conditioner throughout my wet hair.

I usually twist my hair in seperate small twist and let them stay in for about a day. Then I moisturize and un-twist.

My option wasnt really there. But I do single twist, then twist it into a bantu knot. I wont get good twist out results, until my hair is longer.

Without putting it into a bantu knot, straight twist seem to look "electrified" on me.

Thank you ladies for all of your responses. This has been VERY VERY helpful. Keep the comments comin'

I am planning to do braidout next week with box braids.

I would like to try all of the techniques eventually.

I do twistouts. I do about 8-10 individual twists and put small rollers on the ends. It makes my hair look extra thick.

Anky's twist out is BEAUTIFUL!

For my braidout, I do 4 cornrows. When I first started doing them, I tried plaits, but I found that cornrows give me a more uniform wave/curl pattern. Box braids give me straight hair near the scalp, and I don't want that. I also put a roller on the ends.

I think the twist out back like corn rows is better because you get more wave from the root so it looks somewhat natraul.
