What is the use?

What is the use of doing something only "halfway right" ?

I know a person that has worn their hair in microbraids since August. She has not washed her hair since then and plans on waiting until the summer/her birthday so her hair will be "fresh". She thinks that feeding her "baby edges" with grease is more than enough work and constantly berates me and my "Nappy *fill in any explitive you like* hair". She is barely SL and wants to be MBL by May.:lachen: This person has the gall to tell me that my hair smells when I wash my hair 3 times a week and use mainly organic products (I am 19 months post relaxer natural and she is bonelaxed under braids). No water hits her hair, she showers in 2 scarves, (yes one on top of the other:spinning:) and beleives that grease moisturizes her hair.

Could she actually be right? Is it possible for her to retain length? Or should I prepare a bucket of popcorn for the "big reveal"?

You might want to break out the popcorn.
All the dirt and grease that must be caked in the base of the braids is going to make takedown very hard, and she'll probably lose quite a bit of hair in the process.
Is she going to keep in the same set of braids until summer?

That is sooo nasty! How is she gonna try to tell you that yur hair stinks? She must have flies buzzing around her by now. I can't imagine how bad it'll be by May. Yuck!

Yup. She takes out the braids every 3 months, washes the extensions and then rebraids it into her hair.

Is it wrong to laugh or at least snicker if she loses a considerable amount of hair?

I tell her that she should wash it, wear a scarf at night, buy a satin pillowcase, deep condition, consition, shampoo, run through a sprinkler, fall in teh snow...something...ANYTHING! She looks at me with a side eye and says "that dont work for our hair, we need grease. Who wraps their hair up, i dunno white people and mixed people."

:wallbash:Moses take the wheel...

The thought of the smell is making me nauseous. I mean there is nothing better than catching a whiff of your favorite conditioner and then realizing it's your hair...... Even when I was relaxed I washed my hair several times per week (which was part of the problem because I then had to blow dry and flat iron) but still.

shes washes the extensions and not her own hair????!!? and she wants HER OWN hair to grow??! im perplexed.

The thing that get me is that she has abosolutely no routine, no products(by choice). she doesnt wash it, she doesnt wear something at night, she doesnt DC...and yet she has the gall to call me and my 32oz Giovanni TTTT out. Yes "he" has a pump and yes I will carry "him" to the bathroom with me.:look: So what?

Lemme get this straight- she plans to wash her hair only once in a 12-month period, and washes her extensions every 3 months?
:barf: :barf: :barf:

Is she single? Ur friend's dirty. Ew

That i know of, and she thinks every man under the sun wants her and that she will marry a millionare. Delusion is her middle name:lachen:

She isnt my friend...unfortunatly we are related. So ! cant even get rid of her.

sigh,, just keep doing what your doing and prove her wrong, wrong, wrong.
she'll either come around.. or she'll have the glowing eyes of hair hatred peering at the back of your head. either way both of you will know you were right.

Funny thing is she has been grazing SL for 4 years...and in 19 months I have BCd and I am near her. I will probably be SL if not past that when straightened by the summer, so that will make it even more hysterical:yep:.

Just wait for May. She will have to cut her hair and she'll tell you that was her plan all along. OR she'll relax it and have 3 strands of hair as a ponytail... lmao!!

She is a firm beleiver in every negative stereotype imaginable about black hair. She beleives that dirt makes your hair grow, that black people are cursed with bad hair and that the only way a person can be black with long hair is if they are "mixed" or are wearing extensions. Now technically we are both "mixed" by her definition(having non black ancestry) ...so wouldnt that mean she should have long hair by default? I tell her this and her response is "We didnt get enough white and indian in us to make it work:nono::nuts:"

Even before I found hair forums i wasnt this ignorant!!!!

I don't agree with not washing braids and especially if you're layering on grease. Even those who don't wash braids for a month or so will use some cleansing method.

With that said, I went to school with a girl who didn't wash her natural hair for a year (She'd wait till her mom could do it for her). It didn't look dirty. I can't tell you if it smelled coz back in the day when grease was normal, hair had a smell of having grease, and that's what you smelled on her hair: Dax (the green one). She didn't wash her hair but she did clean it. She'd take a section and put Dax grease in it, then she'd thread some cotton wool onto her pick comb and then comb her hair, making sure the cotton wool rubs along the length of her hair. She'd repeat the process, (more grease, fresh cotton) until the cotton wool stayed white and didn't turn brown with dirt. Then she'd work on another section. She had hair as long as I have here which back then seemed out of reach for me coz I was stuck at 3-4 inches. It was nice and thick and dark. I'm so mad that back then, it never occurred to me that I might never see these people again so that I'd realize taking a photo would have been a good idea. I never did take photos with her, but should I ever reconnect with her, I'd love to show you her hair. It was like Ms LynnieB's hair (3C/4A?) just not as long.

Then there was another girl also in boarding school whose hair was natural type 4 and APL or BSB. A single braid at the top of her head would have a tail as long as you see in my small side braid above. I always wondered why people weren't always in her hair playing in it as I would be in my friend's hair asking to braid it for her, and was told it's coz she had lice. Still her hair grew.

So I believe hair doesn't stop growing coz you don't wash it. Now making sure you keep it detangled is a necessity unless you are trying to grow locs (The girls in my school kept it in big square braids which they redid weekly with combing--and BTW, it's not like we knew proper haircare back then as I do now, but their hair was always stretched so combing was a breeze.) But trying to do this with braids, IMO, is a recipe for disaster.

Disclaimer: I am of the camp that loves the smell of freshly washed hair. As someone said, catching a whiff of conditioner and then finding out that's your hair that smells so good is just heaven!

I bet there's a fungus in that forest. She just nasty. How can you wash extensions but not your hair? That's like washing your clothes but not your body. Then again we should be trying to figure out the logic of fools.

Does she detangle whenever she takes the extensions out for washing? All that shed hair could dred up on her after a year. That's gonna be very interesting.

Sometimes a bad hair practice can work for one person. When I was younger, my mom used to relax my hair. She would give me a touch up every 4 weeks and she would touch up my whole hair each time.:nono: We had no clue that it could lead to hair damage, but my hair was bra strap length at the time. People would ooh and ah over how "good" my hair looked. If you would have told either of us that she was damaging my hair, we would have laughed in your face. My version of putting moisture in my hair was using Pink Oil moisturizer and I would grease my scalp with Sulfur 8 grease. :lachen: Perhaps this girl has done this regimen for so long, that she thinks it is fine for her to do. Some people believe that your hair has to be dirty for it to grow. If she gets a hair fungus or whatever, maybe then she will be willing to listen. Until then, just ignore her comments.
