Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

OP, I wasn't going to post until I saw the request to lock the thread on the Suggestions/Requests/Q&A thread making the women who were just trying to answer your question seem like the ones who are in the wrong or attacking you. Attitudes like these are unjustified and "disrespectful."

 That post brought me here too.

For me, relaxers broke my hair off terribly. Even when I started on my HHJ, my hair still popped off:sad:. The chemical burns, I learned how not to get them, very late in the game.

As a natural, my hair will be stretched/straightened 100% of the time, due to SSK's - I straightened my hair with 2 forms of heat :look: and trimmed. After accidently reverting it :perplexed in less than 8 hours of rocking said puff, I had a head full of SSK's :nono::rolleyes:

Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

honestly, there is nothing in this thread that warrants locking it down

Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

Some people prefer to wear their hair straight; wearing natural styles or textures were not their reason for transitioning.

this is not true for everyone. hair is an individual thing. results may vary depending on the head of hair. some people can use heat weekly/biweekly and maintain healthy hair thatbretains length and others cannot. just like some people can use permanent color with no ill effects and others cannot. some people can maintain healthy hair with relaxers and others cannot. there is no absolute truth when it comes to hair.

99 percent of the time does not equal daily heat use. some people only wash/ straighten every 1 - 4 weeks with no touch ups in between. their hair can remain straight the entire time.[ /QUOTE]

I know but most of the "its healthier than chemicals" comments are based off of bad relaxer practices and sensitive hair.

I think the op was really looking for personal responses like this one instead of the "its healthier" thing that goes around over and over. That could make anyone want to lock a thread and forget it ever happened.

for me... it was just as much work and took the same amount of time to get it straight when I was relaxed as it does not that I'm natural. I got burned one too many times and on the spur of the moment decided I was done. When I do wear it straight, I think it much prettier (bouncier, has that natural shine, softer) because it natural.

Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

I feel like yesterday how after watching the DNC and happily posting my Obama stuff on my fb page, I had a friend that's Republican come along and try to negate everything I had, and THEN when I posted something factual to counteract the BS she was trying to spout, she got all NO NO NO NEVERMIND and didn't want to play with me anymore :lachen:

So long as I went along with her program things were fine and dandy but if I said something she didn't want to hear? Back in the bubble, fingers in her ear going LA LA LA! LA LA LA!

Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

I'm going to have to come into the hair forum more often:grin::grin:
I bet I'm missing all kinds of stuff.

Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

Look I never saw the first post but nornally if a post is written offensively (sp.) Its because someone wanted to get a second opinion on a personal disagreement with someone offline. But ppl online taking offense take it too far.

Posts written in anger can try to be neutral but the side their on shows more and thats not done to be malicious it just happens.

So just forget HOW the question is asked next time and just answer it. Please no snarky comments!!!! It makes everything go bad.

GOOD communication involves how a question or statement is delivered. If one would like for a discussion to be 'neutral' and benefit others, it would serve one well to remove abrasiveness/defensiveness from the initial post. Maybe if you had seen the original post you would understand.

The way how a statement is delivered also speaks to the mind frame/underlying ideas the person already has about the topic on hand. Thus persons WILL pick up on it and respond accordingly.

It's no ones fault that the OP came of of the gate in that manner, and in turn didn't get the type of responses she was looking for.

Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

Heat all the time or 99% of the time is way worse than relaxers!! Yall are referring to 3-4 week relaxers and overprocessed hair when its not the same.

If you do a relaxer the right way its much healthier than heat ALL THE TIME. Dont forget ppl 99% is a high percent of heat (i.e. Excessive).

If your natural and you dont straighten everyday or every other day then you shouldnt have answered the question in the first place. It caused a big mess for no reason.

She's lockin the thread because she didnt get straight answers she got the "because its healthy" response which I coulda sworn ALOT of heat was damaging to any type of hair.

Are you saying that someone with a relaxer that likes their hair straight so they flat iron all the time is better than someone who is natural that does the same thing?

As you hang around here a bit longer, you will realize that is highly unlikely that an OP will get the responses based on what they posted, intended or wanted. It's just not the way this board works. When you start a thread, you have to be prepared for what comes with it. You have a lot of different people, personalities, styles, etc on this board. And it's all going to show up on the thread.

That's just the way it is.

No im saying that heat is heat. If you flatiron all the time there is damage. Saying one thing is healthier than another is crazy. And usually when your natural, that silky straight feeling doesnt stay long so you use more heat than relaxed heads.

Not everybody is the same. Some ppl can take heat but dont use your experience to talk for all naturals. If their hair cant handle heat well but they have in their head that heat is healthier than relaxers....... They are gonna go bald.

Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

I try not to straighten often. As much as I love when my hair is sleek, I won't risk damaging my hair with that heat damage. I know how my hair is. Some ladies can take a lot of heat, some can't take chemicals I suppose. The winter is good because I don't have to worry much about my hair reverting.
Also you're making the assumption that you have to use a lot of heat. I can get my hair straight at 350-375 and my hair is in the 4's.It's all in the technique, the type of flat iron (even heat distribution) and products [love avlon keracare creme press it's amazing and hair gets straight faster without excess heat and also stays straight longer]. And also, no I don't have heat damage.

First the heat is moderate. Second I don't use heat all the time but if I wanted to be straight I would (and it would mean using a flat iron every 3 weeks to a month and keeping it in the 3 hundred). That's not so bad. I'm mostly braided up for the year and have only straightened for length checks but kept it straight for a couple (to a few) weeks after before braiding it back up since its already straight.

Oh and I assume naturals do it because they want to, just like people relax because they want to. When my hair is loose I get more single strand knots as a natural and keeping it stretched or straightened solves that. But I'm sure there are tons of reasons as with any choice we make in life.

Can't stand the heat...get the flock out the kitchen lol...OP must be a youngin' and will learn after this. Still waiting fo the day that relaxed vs natural is a thing of the past sigh.

Don't have anything to add...

But can't we all just get along?! Lol anyway I see some heads (a lot to be exact) who should have posted in my thread! Uh umm ladies :)

Anywaaayyyy....

Everyone's different so people's reasoning will be different.

For me, I like the versatility natural hair gives. If I wanted it straight 99% of the time so be it. But I know that during that 1% I can wear it big fluffy and curly. Relaxed heads don't have that option.
Also, it's about hair health for me. Less chemical warfare. If I can get my hair straight without having to relax it, then why relax?

speak for yourself

Woah. Woah. Woah. She said nothing about naturals that straighten everyday. She also did not ask only for naturals that straighten often to respond. I was going to leave this thread alone until I saw this because I answered the question and I rarely straighten at all. If thats the case all relaxed heads need to stop answering this thread as well. Actually almost nobody on this forum should have answered this question (based on what you said) because nobody here is really flipping out a flat iron EVERYDAY.

But your answer is quite irrelevant to the orginal question anyway because she did not ask about people who flat iron everyday, but naturals that keep their hair straight. And from what I know about heat trained naturals the heat is still quite sparingly. They also still protective style and moisturize and seal their hair. They also do not wear their hair in straight styles 24/7 just like relaxed heads don't. People always want to take a question and run to the extreme with it. Like all the "who's really natural" threads.

I also feel like most people's responses were respectful and the question got answered. I know MY post was. Most of the negativity seemed to be coming from the OP. And thats just as real as it gets.

Re: What is the point of being natural if you prefer your hair straight 99% of the ti

I had to go check out her request....

what is the point of being natural if you're straightening 99% of the time?

I see right now that you cannot have an intelligent question, or debate on here without people getting offended. Some do not have the ability to debate without the snide comments or condescending remarks. I'll keep it light and airy from now on since questions evidently are permitted to be asked. I love the forum, just find immaturity annoying.

Pretty disrespectful only because she thinks her question was intelligent and the responses were not then on top of that yall are immature to her....Ummmm I haven't been on the board long but I don't recall anyone ever running to suggestions, request, etc to ask for the thread to be locked. It seems really extra. She already edited her original post so me and many others who were late don't know what she said to begin with so why is she so upset and demading about this thread being closed? SMH I've seen way worse before, I mean dang, she wasn't even personally attacked!! SMDH

^Thank you.
OP stays trying to come for someone regarding what THEY choose to do to THEIR hair. True everyone is entitled to their own opinion and everyone is free to post whatever they want but why is a woman so concerned about another woman's hair. Now that- I will never understand. It seems like because she failed in her own transition she comes after naturals who choose to wear their hair in straight styles. You would think that OP is natural herself but she is not and puts herself on a pedastool because she relaxes twice a year. Normally I choose to ignore people like that but no editing this time....
And there you have it...

From post #14 and on and on and on.

A mild review of my second post:
If a person has a hair argument and is trying settle it, they would go here. If that person is still angry when they ask the question it would ACCIDENTALLY come out as an "angry post". If ppl read it and notices the hostility they should assume its because of an unsettled argument instead of thinking the question is just to make ppl mad.

I disagree. If you wear your hair straight 99% of the time you don't have to use heat every other day to do so. So it is an "assumption" of hers that this is the case when really she is uninformed or talking of her experience only. Heat straightened naturals like former member (or is she here still) Pink Skates, only straighten their hair every 2-3 weeks. They tie their edges during work out and wrap the hair until it dries and KIM. It is feasible to have your hair straight and only use head 2 times in a month and a half to two months time and keep it on a minimal heat.

If she doesn't want to hear that there are other ways to do this without excessive heat then oh well...Then it's really not a question where she can learn something. It's an assumption.

There should be a function on anything with internet access that makes the device explode when its user begins to suffer from internet ratchetness. It is a real condition plaguing the lives of borderline sane individuals.

CurlsBazillion - I've seen a few requests for a thread to be locked, but never a reason like this. It's usually just "can you please lock/close my thread". Tis all. So the reason intrigued me to see what the haylll was going on
