Yes, the year is half over, but a 6 month challenge can be the right amount of motivation...

:bdance:Welcome to Waist Length Dreams!

This is a resurrection of the 2018 Waist Length Dreams challenge! This is a two year 6 month challenge to motivate us to longer healthier lenghts! :yep:

The new check in dates are posted below. You can join at any time during the remainder of the year, but I will stop updating the challengers list Aug 31, 2024.

To join, LIKE THIS POST, and post the following:

Current Length:
Ultimate Goal:
Regimen:
How many inches do you have to go to get to WL:
Natural/Relaxed/Other: (OPTIONAL)
Tips/Tricks:
Issues or difficulties you're having/Things you're tweaking to grow or retain more:
Starting Pic:

You aren't an OFFICIAL challenger w/out a starting pic!

We will have the following check ins for 2024

August 31
December 31

I started this post based on a discussion in another thread -- regarding the absence of length challenges and motivational pictures on the hair boards. So, feel free to join and post lots and LOTS of pictures of your hair. It doesn't matter if you'll be able to make WL by the end of the year, we're all here to support each other on our hair journeys.

(My starting photos coming soon.)

I'm shooting for MBL this year.

I would join you, Sis, but I'm having a time with these darn pop up ads on this site. It makes the site look and feel really cheap and it's making me feel less secure about sharing on here. I've been spending less time here. I really don't want to lose this community but the oppressive Temu ads and pop up ads when I click on something are very off-putting.

Are you looking on your phone or laptop? On the phone, I don't see any ads.

Sorry everyone, this past week was busy, but here is my starting post:

Current Length: (Grazing?) WL
Ultimate Goal:
TBL
Regimen:

- Weekly washes with kaolin clay and ayurvedic herbs
- Moisturize & seal daily
- Wear hair in buns and ponytails. Keep hair covered when not doing those things
How many inches do you have to go to get to WL:
I'm growing out previous damage. I didn't big chop my hair to even out the ends so they're kind of various lengths. I want to say 2 to 4 inches until a satisfactory portion of my hair is WL.
Natural/Relaxed/Other: (OPTIONAL)
Natural
Tips/Tricks:
Installing two strand twists and just leaving them alone for long periods of time. Also, monthly micro-trims using the lunar calendar.
Issues or difficulties you're having/Things you're tweaking to grow or retain more:
Keeping up with drinking water. This is important.
Starting Pic:

My starting pics are a bit dated, but my hair has been in two strand twists for a month. It'll be a bit of time before I take them down so I'll have to use slightly older pictures as my starting photos.

Thankfully, I'm not seeing the popup ads (maybe my adblockers are doing what they should), but there are so many weird changes. Right now when I post, it gives me a post preview but doesn't show that the post has been made... but if I refresh the screen the post shows up AND the post is still in edit mode. I guess this is why people are double posting...? It's frustrating, but I might end up slowing down on posting if things don't get fixed in the next few months.

I might have like 1 or 2 strands of hair at wl if I avoid cutting it lol so I’ll save my spot
Current Length: bsl
Ultimate Goal: hip
Regimen:
wash 1-2x a week; prepoo when I can;
deep conditioning 1-2x weekly; moisturizing on non wash days; bond builders a few times a month;
Keep hair detangled with good, low ph products;
Stretch relaxers;
Silk pillowcases

How many inches do you have to go to get to WL:
longest strand looks only 2-3 inches away if I give it a good stretch
Natural/Relaxed/Other: relaxed (OPTIONAL)
Tips/Tricks:
Moisturizing daily

Clean scalp/ scalp brushes
Sealing with serums on top of oil (or butter )

Ladies, ladies, ladies!!! 2 years and 4 months ago a beautician gave me a protein treatment and it caused my hair to knot and tangle. I went from nearly HL to a buzz cut. 2.4 years later it is 2" from BSL! OMG I am so excited at the growth and will not ever touch protein again!

I did a small trim yesterday. I keep looking at the super thick ends on instagram and I wish I had that. I’m getting a lot of new hairs which I think is a result of my shampoos and stopping the weaves about a year ago. Hairs are about 2-3 inches so far so it’ll be a good 3-4 years before they get long enough for my taste. I’m a little sad about that realization but I think setting realistic expectations for myself is going to be important to stick with the routine as well as making sure it stays simplistic.
- Scalp routine for maximum growth
- Hair routine for length retention

This simple routine will definitely get you where you wanna be.

@Blessedwithabundance14 you have made an amazing recovery! I’m so sorry you had to go through that. What kind of protein treatment caused so much damage?
I believe it was Aphogee but I could be wrong on the brand. It didn't happen at the shop but when I washed it at home a couple weeks later as I had done for 7 years it knotted up into 3 huge locs. The only difference was the protein and it literally made my hair feel like hay/straw/birds nest.

Thank you for responding.

So, to check my understanding, you said first the beautician gave you a protein treatment at the shop when you got your hair done. That protein brand and specific product is unknown to you.

Then, as per your normal processes, you did your own protein treatment at home, several weeks after your beauty shop visit and protein treatment. Your protein treatment that you used might have been Aphogee (2 Step?). Then, your hair locked up. Is this correct?

Did you get the name of the protein product your beautician used? Do you continue to go to the same beautician today?

Your current hair is glorious and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your set back and your incredible comeback.

I have never really used protein ever, but she talked me into it at the shop. She did the treatment and a few weeks later I washed my hair with the same products I've been using for 15 years and it was so dry, felt hard and knotted up on me. I had never had that happen to me ever, so I know it was the protein.

I never used her again and went to another beautician. This time last year my hair was barely neck length and she did the trims and deep conditioning treatments that helped me retain all the length.

I am not for sure what the protein was but I thing Aphogee.

Thank you! NEVER EVER EVER will I use protein again!

Thank you for explaining.
Wow, in one year you have gotten all this glorious length!

Great job to your stylist and bravo to you!

So, my pull tests at this point are unreliable, because depending on the kind of hair mask that I've used, my coils can be too tight to stretch. My coils are still kind of tight in this picture, so my hair is almost showing my full length, but not quite. (This is why I do length check pictures in the shower.)

These pictures are from August.

These pictures are from this week.

Left, just a bit of water. Right, a bit of water and conditioner. Shower water would give more stretch.

I haven't done a shower length check in a while. I'm not expecting much because August was a rough month for me in terms of diet and hair care.
