Twist/Braid/Bun for Growth Challenge 10/1/13-12/31/13

I just took out a set of three week old twists. They were getting very fuzzy at the top. I camouflaged it as long as I could with headbands and scarves, but it was time...

Right now I have it in 6 Celies. I am getting ready to use some red pimento hair growth oil on my scalp and a mixture of coconut oil, extra dark JBCO, oyin honey hemp and some other oils on my hair. I'll leave that in for an hour or with a conditioning cap and then wash. Not sure if I am going to deep condition -- thinking of doing a protein treatment?? Not sure....

What ever I decided to do after washing, I am going to do medium sized twists 'cause I can do those quicker...
Or ---I may put Celie's back in and twist tomorrow. Very indecisive today...:perplexed

Wore a twist out Friday night. Then twisted it back up friday night. Wore a twist out Saturday night and just put on a bonnet. Wore a twist out today. Now starting my wash regimen. May not get twisted back up tonight but definitely tomorrow.

I used my pass....had my hair flat iron and will be going back into twists next week. I think I'm gonna do the size BraunSugar has this time. I usually do minis.

Y'all have some gorgeous twists!

I'm on week 2 of this set of twists. I'm going to do an apple cider rise this weekend since my scalp is extra itchy in spots and tree oil ain't cutting it.

I wore a twist out tonight. Sometimes my hair is a little too defined. When I take out my twists, the sections still just look like mini twists :ohwell: When it is longer I might appreciate it.

Trust me you will. When my hair was shorter, I could get really defined twistouts that I would pull out to death to get the shape/volume I liked.

Now I can just untwist without separating to get a look I like. Makes maintaining a twistout much easier and less tangles. I still love volume so on the last day I will separate for extra fullness but it isn't a necessity anymore

 That is good news. Thanks for letting me know. I am looking forward to having 20 twists instead of 100 to get a twist out.

Hey ladies # I forgot to check in lately, but I'm still on board. I've been wearing a wash and go out for three days, then a bun or updo the rest of the week. Next wash I might put chunky twists in for a week then wear a twistout for a few days to see how that goes.

Today was wash day and I applied Eden bodyworks curl cream underneath my gel for added moisture and it feels nice and soft, but its fluffier with less definition so I'll be lucky to even get second day hair out of it. It may be a sacrifice I have to make in order to make sure my hair is moisturized enough during the cool months.

Twists are holding up decently. It will be two weeks on Saturday. I think I may be able to get another week out of them. I did want to do a protein treatment though...so I'll see what I'll do by tomorrow...

I cowashed my twists a couple days ago. I'm going to have to do that a few times a week since I am working out 6 days a week now.

My update, so far so good with keeping to the challenge.
After taking down my medium box braids of 3 weeks
I cowashed. Nothing too fancy.
I spent 2 days stretching my hair via african threading method.
Then my hair was out for about 3 days :( not by choice
Got my hair braided up in 2.
I plan on keeping these in until next week,
and then a protein treatment. I am in much need of one!

I've been bunning this week, for some reason. I NEVER bun, but I just wasn't motivated to do anything else with this mess. :-/

Haven't been updating since my edges and perimeter relapse. I have been doing a curly puff instead of the tight buns I was doing. Today, I put a head wrap on and called it a day.

I'm tired of doing my hair. After December it will be time for some extensions so I can get a break. Too bad NY is on a weekday. I could use a long weekend for an install.

ITA! I've been itching to braid it up.

My twists are coming out sooner than expected. My son likes to play with them and pull on them. Most of them started coming undone. :-/ I guess I'll be putting another set in soon. I may wear a bun for a week though.

Still bunning. My hair is straightened right now. Maybe next month I'll do another set of twists. Blow drying first kept the ends from knotting.

Hi Ladies,

I know we are not to hide our hair with wigs but I've chosen to wear wigs for the rest of year as my protective styles. My own hair is braided in a beehive from about 2 weeks ago. I sewed on a weave cap to preserve the cornrows. I plan to keep the beehive for 11 weeks.
I will be washing, deep conditioning and steaming every 2 weeks. Every day I spritz with water/conditioner mix then spritz with oil mix to seal. I also apply jbco to my scalp and massage.
I’m switching up between my rpgshow wig and another homemade wig I made with kinky curly onychair. I’m looking for a short sexy wig to add to my rotation.
Giving my hair a break and hoping for great retention – I plan to remove the beehive January 19.

I'm not usually about that bun life but...

I'll be going back to protective styling as of today. I'm a bunner for the most part. My hair been rollerset, flat ironed, etc for the pasr 2 months and it needs a rest. So back to bunning I go. I'm thinking of getting a weave in December and wearing it until February. I want APL by June and leaving my hair alone is the best thing to do.

I started my wash day process with a prepoo and didn't get to finish it so tomorrow I'll finish it and plan to do medium chunky twists and will wear them for four or five days and then a twistout for two or three days.

To those who wear twists frequently, can you give me some maintenance tips? how do you keep them moisturized, prevent fuzziness, and keep them laying down (not sticking out all over the place after sleeping on them)?

Leslie_C I wrap my twists around my head and pin them with a hairpin most nights. I put my scarf over them to keep them neat at night. Sometimes I braid the twists into a bun and put a scarf over that. This keeps them laying down.

I have not yet perfected washing them, but I only keep them in 7-10 days, so they come out on my wash days. When I do end up cowashing midweek (not often), I put them into braids and wash just my scalp.

To keep them moisturized, every 2 to three days I spritz them with water, apply a lotiony leave in, seal with a little oil and butter on the ends.

Washed and blow dried last night. Wearing twists for the next couple of weeks.

Did a length check too, and my hair is actually longer than I thought. I was full, blunt MBL after my last trim about 5 months ago. Now I'm a U-shaped WHIP length and my ends are in great shape. Hopefully I'll keep retaining now that I have a regimen that works for me, and I can finally get to HL and start maintaining.

Sigh! Longing for your HL hair so I can see it :yep: Congratulations on your progress.

I know I'm hosting this round but I haven't been as active as usual in this thread. After I had my hair rollerset, I have been struggling with putting my hair in twists. I was wearing flat twists which worked but its a struggle to get the back right. And I'm really hating my twists right now because they shrink up at night and are just too shirt to pull back or up or anything.

Over the past two weeks and I have been doing major search and destroys. I had a head full of split ends. And after spending time doing that I just didn't feel like spending another 2 hours twisting. :nono: So my hair is back out again this week.

I colored my hair last week, so I will probably get back to flat twists on Sunday to get me through December. January I will be putting in some type of extensions or wigging it to give myself a break from the constant twisting.

I am look forward to the point where I can pull my twists back into a banana clip. I need some lazy hair days. I think I am just tired of my hair looking raggedy.

^^ faithVA I totally understand. That's part of the reason I wanted longer hair. I like to do lazy styles and still look decent. :look:

I know :yep: I am trying to be patient for longer hair. Because this hair is going to end up in some flat twisted buns all the time  I don't even think styling would be that bad if I had an extra 3 to 4 inches.

I just need to focus on the positive because my hair has come a long way. I think I'm just ready for this end of the year length check and for this years challenges to be over with.

Twisted up for my trip home to DC for the week. I am heavy duty sealing! I want it to still be moisturized at the end of the week (just in case I don't have time to go buy hair stuff).
