1) Stretching is a good thing
2) The purpose of protein vs. moisture, and how to tell when I need which one
3) That just because my hair is thick DOESN'T mean I can use heat everyday (yes, a stylist told me this once)
4) CO washes/deep conditioning
5) Rollersetting
6) Heat protectant
7) Ceramic tools, instead of Gold N' Hot
8) I don't have to comb everyday
9) Water is my friend, and that I can wash once per week instead of once a month (yeah, eww)
10) Don't wrap a towel around wet hair
11) No brushing 100 times for sheen. In fact, no brushing at all!
12) Trims aren't a necessity
13) Black women don't NEED relaxers, and my daughter will not be getting one until she's...well, never, if I can help it!

I can't believe how lost I was before this board!

Hey! what's wrong with Gold N Hot? is there something i should know. i love their products. tell me please !

1. Moisture is great! Moisturized ends are key.

2. I learned about different vitamin supplements that aide hair growth.

3. MTG & Surge (good products for thicker, longer hair)

4. Most of my pre-LHCF practices were good, like co-washing.

5. So many of us are natural or transitioning!

6. Heat styling is to be avoided or minimized to an occasion.

7. Everything is not for everybody.

Oh, I don't think there's anything wrong with Gold N Hot prodcuts! I just learned that ceramic tools are better for you hair than the metal irons. I named Gold N Hot because I've used them for the past 10 years. I think they even make ceramic stuff, so I'll edit to say metal!:)

-My scalp wasn't dry...it was itching because I had piled too many products on it! I do not need to grease my scalp (haven't done it since joining LHCF and my scalp/hair is healthier than it's ever been...my scalp rarely itches)

-Grease does NOT= Moisture

-It's OK to wash my hair frequently. I love CO Washes, and CON!

-Water is a FRIEND, not the enemy. i.e. frequent washes, drinking, moisturizer

-Stretching relaxers is a good thing for my hair. 4-6 weeks is NOT long enough, 12+ weeks is more like it!

-Curling irons are not a life necessity...I used to be addicted to all of my curling irons, thanks to lhcf I don't even know where they are.

#1 Lesson...GOOD HAIR CARE CANNOT BE REPLACED BY A MIRACLE PRODUCT!!! You have to put in the work, you'll def. reap the benefits!!!

Grow that hair girls...happy new year!!!

1. My hair thrives on weekly deep conditioning
2. Relaxer stretching is a great technique for saving strands
3. Grease perpetuates dandruff instead of eliminating it (for me)
4. Frequent washings & water are *good* for my hair
5. A stylist is not necessary on the road to long, healthy hair
6. I learned how to do a fabulous wash & go
7. Self-trimming is the best bet for any instances in which sharp objects come in the vicinity of the ends of my hair
8. Direct heat is not my hair's friend
9. Paul Mitchell The Detangler is a lifesaver for mega-stretching
10. CO washes are great for stretching and imparting moisture
11. Jojoba oil is versatile & useful
12. A balance of protein and moisture can change the hair game for almost any head
13. I learned how to tackle and tame new growth
14. I learned to embrace my 4a coils and enjoy playing with the springs
15. Wild Growth Oil is good for my scalp and my ends
16. Pre-pooing is good for softening up my hair before pooing
17. Detangling in sections saves my nerves
18. Garlic poo/con is good for curbing shedding (never tried it, but good to know)
19. Soft water is important in maintaining moisturized and healthy hair
20. MSM can change hair's texture and consistency

I learned the same things that everyone else learned. The keys to less breakage are:

1. moisture and slip
2. little to no heat
3. protective styles.
4. Keeping hair braided while washing.
5. Daily wash and conditioner

I also learned that all products don't work the same for everyone. Even though hair is made of the same thing, our individual hair doesn't react the same as everyone else's to certain products.

The best products I have tried because of this message board are:

1. Affirm Mild Relaxer
2. Keracare Humecto (tub)
3. Elucence Moisture Balancing Conditioner
4. Elucence Moisture Benefits shampoo
5. Extra Virgin Olive Oil (amazing stuff!)
6. Elucence Silk Hydrating Elixir for flat ironing hair so silky straight that I can sleep on it uncovered and it still looks the same when I wake. All I have to do is brush it out and my hair is completely straight and still soft.

I've learned to:
moistuzing daily
deep condition weekly
find a good balance of protein & moisturizing conditioners
rollerset my hair using a creamy leave-in as opposed to setting lotions
buy pure organic oils & essential oils to make my own oil mixtures

1) Most "ethnic" products are a joke
2) I learned that taking care of hair is not that difference from what other races do!
3) Don't tell folk what you learned unless they are really open to it.
4)With moisture, protein, and minimal or no heat anything is possible.

The most important lesson I've learned here at LHCF are:
1. Deep conditioning is imperative to having healthy hair.
2. I decide when and how much to trim by doing it myself.
3. Rollersetting is the best way for me to style my fragile fine-textured strands.
4. The best method for moisturizing my hair is with a good conditioner once a week.

(1) Stretch relaxers as long as possible without incurring additional breakage.

I used to believe I could not go more than 6-8 weeks without a touch-up. And I wondered why I was getting soooo much breakage. Finally realized that I was getting relaxers too frequently and hair breakage has stopped ever since I started stretching.

(2) You don't have to trim your hair "regularly".

Another thing I used to believe was that trimming my ends would help my hair grow. Not in my case. I was trimming my ends every time I got a relaxer and wondering why my hair never seemed to get longer. I haven't trimmed at all in 2005 and contrary to popular belief, my hair is growing just fine now.

  1. I don't need a relaxer every month. I can wait every two months and I won't be bald or have excessive combout if I do stretch.
  2. Moisture is more important to protein
  3. I can wash my hair more than once a week without it being dry like haystacks
  4. I don't need a monthly trim...:look No wonder I wouldn't gain any length
  5. Many hairstylists don't know what the *** they are doing.
  6. It is very possibly for a black girl with 4a hair (like mine) to grow to waist length.
  7. I CAN do my hair and achieve bouncy, movable results.

1. COing with cheap condish.
2. steaming. I do this at the gym since i'm paying for it anyway.
3. clipping my hair into sections for a cleaner, no tangle wash.
4. drinking lots of water
5. nexxus poo's, sebastian potion no. 9, biolage ultra hydrating balm (using better products and all I need is a smidgen)
6. shower filters & water softeners.
7. I learned natural hair can be just as gorgeous as relaxed hair.
8. I no longer use a towel on my wet hair, either. I noticed a few months ago lots of hairs within my towel. So now, I place a plastic cap over my clipped wet hair until i'm ready to style.

I've been lurking since August but just joined today! :)
