Sweet Jesus! My hair....

Sorry to hear about your hair. My advice is to make sure the reason you are losing your hair is not related to anything medical. I have a thyroid condition and before I was diagnose I was experiencing a lot of hair loss and brittle hair.

I think everyone got the wrong impression because of the way the response is worded. It did sound like you were a bit angry and trying to lay blame. I'm glad that you clarified yourself and thats not the case. Your hair is beautiful in the picture. If your regime was working for you, which it obviously was, then by all means stick to it. Personally I joined the board because a lot of tips did work for me, but still I pick and choose what I need. Also, maybe you should try one or two tips at a time this way you can find out what does and does not work for you. thanks for sharing your story and sorry to hear about your hair.

I agree with what Tracy said. I understand your frustration because if you are trying to do right by your hair and it doesnt work you start to wonder what am i doing wrong? I cant do protective styling. I tried it but my hair was like what is going on? Plus I had my hair in braids from jan to may and now i want it out. I cant see myself having braids for that period of time and then when they are out just putting my hair in a bun everyday. i cant do it. it works for some but for me it doesnt. also there was a thread about not wrapping your hair. some people had a bad experience with breakage and thinning of the hair. i havent. when i do my wrap i dont use a comb or a brush i use my hand and i dont make the wrap tight i just smooth with my hand and pin. no effects. i also wear my hair out. i lose maybe 10 hairs the whole week i had my hair out. ends werent dry, hair looked and felt healthy. some people cant do this. i dont like to air dry. it looked good when the hair is damp but my hair is like a chia pet. you add water and it grows. and its thick as well.

i stay away from blowdryers always have, and any appliance like a curling iron or flat iron make me nervous. so roller sets are more practical for me.

what is this to say. i experiement to see what my hair likes. it may work for some but for me it doesnt. i always write down everything i see (products. regimes) and wait. i dont run out and do it or buy it. i wait. i see if in a month the person is still in love. if by that time they still like it i then see if i would like to try it. if i dont i just dont. if i do i see how my hair reacts. i give these things a week. if by the end of the week my hair is angry i toss it and say its not for my hair. and just do what i always have been doing. if it works i add it to my regime. i never keep doing something no matter how many people rave about it. unless they are my twin sister and we have the same hair i dont keep doing something just because it works for some.

also you would be surprised at how much your insight might help someone who is experiencing the same thing.

With hair there isnt an absolute. this is why there are tons of products on the shelves. if everyone had the same hair needs we would not see as many people using different products. we would all be using the same thing.

BTW i'm glad you spoke up. part of this hair board (at least I hope it is) is about sharing and discussing. if you feel like you are having a problem hair wise then i feel you should express it. i mean it shouldnt be that people should only come here to praise something. if you have to vent then i feel you should be allowed to. but you have to be sure your venting isnt laying blame on anyone. no one put a gun to your head and told you to do anything advised here. so you have to take responsible for your actions. you messed up your hair not the ladies here. i know you didnt come out and say so and so and her advice messed me up but it could be viewed that way. but as long as you know that no one is responsible for your hair but you and whatever you do is not anyone's else fault but your own. hopefully you can revive your hair and get it back to how it was before.

maybe you should write a journal and figure out what may have gone wrong after each washing so you can determine what may or may not be working for your hair.

Miss J

Take it from me. I DO NOT FOLLOW EVERYTHING THAT IS ON THE BOARDS BECAUSE NOT EVERYTHING WORKS FOR ME. The S-Curl thing for me was a disaster

but worked wonders for my sister. Some shampoos with SLS are fine on my hair and some aren't...find what works for you. Some members here use SLS and it has not affected them in a bad way. I don't like to wear my hair in a bun because it gives me frizzy ends. The mango butter was made my hair sticky and frizzy so that was a bust. The point I am trying to make here is that not everyone can use the same system. Try it ONCE and if it dosen't work...toss it! As for greasing you scalp (BTW I LOVE GREASE) try using Shea Butter. It is a grease but with no petroleum or mineral oil. I have a brand I use but it is not around me right now.

I am not sure if it was you or someone else, but I have breakouts around my hairline too. This bothers me because I went through puberty with flawless skin now this it is a mess. I think after much thought I came with a reason why this may be occurring. Before the boards I assume we used good ole hair grease. Hair grease is thick and stays in the same spot you leave it in. Now we use light oils that travel throughout the hair, including the hairline. When we sleep we toss and turn and before you know it, or even if you don't notice it, oil hits the hairline and you break out. This is my conclusion. If you simply oil your ends my guess would be that if you don't wear your hair up at all times the ends flip and flop and somehow brush against the hairline once in awhile. leading to breakouts. So now I am back to my good ole shea butter which is just like grease but without the mineral oil or petroleum.

Everyone must realize what is good and bad for their hair. I remember reading how cones in conditiner were bad for the hair but I LOVE me some comes

As a rule... you should try something out once and if it doesn't work chuck it.

PS. I HATE Infusium. It kills my hair and makes it look like a cheap doll's hair. You may want to stick with creamy leave-ins because they are more gentle.

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

My relaxed hair didn't like Infusium 23 as a leave-in, either. A little bit worked good as a setting lotion, though. Go figure! My fave leave-ins for my relaxed hair were All Ways 911 and Aussie Hair Insurance. Then I discovered Pantene Daily Strengthening Complex and African Formula "Let it Gro" Leave-In Spray. VO5 has a good one, but I can't remember the name--it was a color protecting spray for color treated hair...

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

Infusium ... I have mixed feelings. I prefer creamier leave ins, I used a lil too much and my poor hair felt so dry! I think I'll dilute it somewhat or mix it with somthing next time I use it.

Miss J:
I found it's not cool for my hair to try each and every tip on boards, but looking at the principle helps me. for instance if someone recommends S-curl activator, I try to think WHY that could help; could it be the glycerin, the regular application of moisture to the hair? And then take it from there. I'm glad to say I've finally settled on what products to use and routines to follow/avoid.

Your hair will recover, with plenty of TLC. Good luck and take care!

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

I'm also sorry about your hair woes ..........but I couldn't agree more with the others in that what works for them doesn't work for everyone else, the same way that what works for you wouldn't appeal to anyone else. For example, I think I'm one of few people on this board that blow dries, flat irons AND curls their hair once a week and that works for me. For some of the ladies here that would wreck their hair in a short period. But MY routine works for me. And there are people on here that cringe at the thought of grease coming anywhere near their scalps (myself included). Everyone is different.

I think you should return to your routine that was working for you. If your hair is still shedding then that is another problem in itself...which I hope does not continue for long. Good luck!

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

Ms. J-

Sorry to hear about your set back. Someone has already said it, but hair growing is a long learning process so try not to be too discouraged.

I too I am struggling with breakage due to airdrying. My hair is definitely thinning because I have been pulling it out while trying to get it straight after airdrying. So I figure I either don't do it right, or that it doesn't work for me, so I am going back to what I used to do, which is a wet wrap set.

Be encouraged.

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

Sorry to hear about your hair problems....there is little in ones beauty care regime that can be more distressing. I joined the board because I took out braids that I had worn for YEARS. The braids were both good and bad, but after wearing them so long, I had lost touch with my hair! It was so tightly curly. I was confused as to perm or not to perm. But I did remember my basic hair type....Thick, prone to be wiry, and easily damaged. Knowing that, I took some suggestions from the board...Vitamins, esp, and then worked from what I knew in the past. I just purchased an ionic hair dryer (please see post)....and I bought a good conditioner, shampoo, and hairdress. It seems my hair is growing like a weed, and every time I wash it, I'm more amazed at how well it comes out without a perm. I'm just glad I stuck to my guns. The only thing I would recommend across the board is VITAMINS!

Yes, Pumpkin!

I know everyone's hair is different, but I am so surprised that some actually like Infusium! It also makes my hair dry and look like doll's hair.

MissJ, I really suspect that it was the infusium that did this to your hair and I suspect that you didn't moisturize your hair enough.

Don't worry, just go back to what you were doing before.

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

MissJ,

First , let me say that I wish you the best in all of your hair care endeavors....

Second, I agree with those who state that what works for some may not work for others. Although I love this site, I don't do EVERY single thing that someone posts about. Once you find a regimen that works for you - stick with it until that doesn't work anymore...If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.

The best thing about this site is that there is so much info about hair care products as well as pros and cons about certain products that will help you save money (and your hair) in the long run....There are a select few I have to thank for their hair care suggestions, so start out by remembering those who gave great advice and see what they post from time to time.

Only you know what works best for your hair, so it's best that you go back to basics for your regimen and wait several weeks (or at least until your next touch-up) for results....If you do decide to take this advice, let us know what happens in a few weeks...

I hope this helps

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

MissJ,
Maybe you can start keeping a hair journal so you can pinpoint what works for you and what doesn't.

The bottom line for healthy hair is
1. A healthy system to foster growth
2. Clear follicles for hair to grow out of easily
3. Clean healthy scalp to support the hair
4. Moisturized stress-free hair

People have different regimens to acheive these four things but it's important to find whatever works best for you and scrap what doesn't.

So for instance if oiling your scalp is necessary for you, choose an oil like jojoba that doesn't clog the follicles or create build-up on your scalp.

Or if activator/glycerin winds up weakening your hair, instead of making it strong and stretchy(which happened to me one year) then don't use it. Instead, be sure whatever deep conditioner you're using keeps your hair moisturized properly.

Sometimes stress-free hair for some people means protective styling but for others the same style might actually cause strain on the hair*. I personally can't do ponytails/buns because I've experienced breakage. Wearing my hair down works best for me and making sure it's well moisturized (by washing 2ce weekly)is helping me w/ growth.

*Be careful how you handle your hair also - I had bad problems w/ tangles (which stress the hair and ends up in breakage when trying to get them out). The physical action of washing your hair sometimes creates more tangling problems. It's a situation of an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure. Tangles and knots and the process of detangling really cause a lot of physical stress on hair and is the enemy when trying to retain length.

Just focus on the main things necessary for healthy hair(healthy body, clear follicles and scalp and moisturized hair). It's a personal decision choosing what method/products help you achieve these four things the best.

It's a trial and error process. But it also helps paying close attention to the recommendations of people on the board w/ your hair type. (A lot of times what works for another 4a also works for me.)

I have to agree with the rest o the posters and tell you to do what works for you. There are some members who have great success w/ diff. methods that I know my hair laughs at. I cannot wash my hair everyday because airdrying will make my hair a tangled bushy mess that I can't comb through. I get better results like MissM said when I hood-dry and hot curl once a week because my hair stays on my head when I comb it instead of breaking! I don't use grease, but I make my own "grease" out of shea butter, avocado butter, castor, jojoba, and coconut oil. You know your hair best so pick and choose what you think your hair needs!

Miss J..You look great in your pic by the way...

I am so sorry to hear about your hair woes and your frustrations. Sometimes we can all get caught up in the advice and hoopla surrounding a product and run out to get it only to be disappointed. The same goes for procedures and methods.

Some people swear by wearing buns and protective styles ALL of the time. Or by using specific products (s-curl for example) and methods (rinsing daily for example). It's good to make note of these things and if interested, to try to them. However, if it doesn't work for your hair once (the maximum twice), I would leave it alone. What works for one or some, doesn't work for all.

I think that it is only fair that you be able to vent on the board. There may be some people who are experiencing the same thing right now and could be reading this to find support and the answers that you yourself are looking for.

I know that there were many posts against grease on the scalp and how bad it is for the hair (as well as articles to support this), but I've always used grease on my scalp without any problems. I've also used substitutes without any problems as well.

Just remember that there are over 1000 members of this board and even if 500 of them don't like a particular method or product, it doesn't mean that you should stop doing it or using it.

Go back to what works for your hair and add new methods or products (only if you're interested)to enhance your regimen. Recently, I've been on a PJ craze only to discover what I truly love about my staple products and why they work for me.

I had to go back to oiling my scalp at least once a week. I'm still working on the airdrying thing. These days my hair is shedding as well. Maybe it's the weather change.

Thanks y'all. I'll post my pics probably on Thursday. I took them Saturday before I washed my hair.

MissJ, are you posting your "after" pictures today. We would like to see the difference in how your hair looked before and how it looks now.

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

I'm thinking about giving up the Infusium as well, as it does tend to be drying, I'm finally starting to notice.

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

Just curious Karonica,
when you do give up the infusium what do you plan on using as a leave in?

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

I dunno.
confused.gif
I wanted to try the Pantene leave-in. But good grief, I've got so much Infusium left. I'm gonna use it up first (I've got a lot to finish up), and once I run out, go and buy the Pantene stuff. I want something that's light, but does a good job of detangling and defining curls (which I have also been having problems doing lately, I don't know if it's because of the Infusium). The reason why I've been using the Infusium for as long as I have, is because I like how it detangles, and I love the smell.

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

well, you'll love the way the pantene smells -- it's heavenly. i used it a long time ago. the way infusium works for me is with a few drops my oils.

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

How are you using the Infusium? Just wondering. I use it everyday and love it. I lightly spray it on my wet hair and then seal in the moisture by using Elasta QP Mango Butter throughout my hair. Then I let it air dry. When my hair is dry it is very soft. Infusium by itself is not really moisturizing. Try it with some type of moisturizer if you don't already. It may produce better results on your hair.

Re: Sweet Jesus! My hair....

I also experienced breakage with airdrying. And the trick is to not comb air dryed air. Try finger combing it instead
