Steaming Challenge 2012 - Part 1

Yesterday I steamed in the steam room with Curls Hair Tea. Unfortunately I was halfway through application when I realized that shea butter is like, the 1000th ingredient. Probably a negligible amount, but my hair still felt shea-y when I rinsed it out. A little gummy, hard to detangle, etc... I did a WNG so when my hair finally dried, it was moisturized and soft, but my curls were a lot tighter and had more shrinkage (this tends to happen with my hair with increased moisture). My hair also did not have the body it normally has when I used my Royal Curl Shaping Cream, so I can really only attribute that to the shea butter. My hair is, however, still very moisturized and with just a little refreshing with curl cream olive oil and water spritz, I am rocking decent (albeit more shrunken) 2nd day hair. All in all, I think steaming the conditioners in has been good for my hair, but I'm still trying to find the best DC

Yesterday I steamed with SSI Okra Recoconstructor. I also steamed with a amla & brahmi paste - my hair feels SO good doing these ayurvedic pastes.

Does anyone steam in braids (without extensions)? How effective is it?

Is it better to steam with oils? Protein? DC? or a mix of all of them?

Steamed with HV's Cocasta and will steam with HV's Sitrinillah. All Hairveda tonight. Hairveda is the OG for me.

I'm having a HV weekend! I've had Vatika Frosting in my hair since yesterday. Today I'm steaming with it and Cocasta, then will wash, then will DC with Strinillah. I'm tempted to straighten my hair. I haven't straightened it since October. But then there is the healthy voice in my head telling me to just put it up after my steaming sessions today. I should wait until Spring when the cold weather is gone before I use heat again.

Oh and I just got the paypal notice that my new HV package has shipped. I think I have one of everything coming!

Steamed with cocasta, spritz my hair with a green tea/coffee mix, then threw some Sitrinillah on top. Will be steaming again in a few.

judy4all I steam in big ole fat braids to minimise tangling - I have no issues doing so. I am not sure if you mean mimi braids or big ones tho.

You can steam with anything any way you like. I usually steam with every DC treatment, whether moisture or protein. I also steam with oils (for me this is a separate step tho - because after I may do a ayurvedic paste which requires the hair to be coated with oil). Some persons even steam with plain ole water. Up to you.

HTH

judy4all I'm thinking they will fuzz up. Steam injects moisture into your hair no matter how you have it under the hood....lol. So I wouldn't worry about that.

I was in mini-twists for 3 weeks. I steamed only using oils bc I was afraid there would be too much buildup or residue that I wouldn't be able to get out completely with the twists in. IMO, I think it would be even harder with braids?

judy4all My daughter steams with her moisture mix in twist. Sometimes it gets too hot on her parts so she has to put a thin show cap on but otherwise no issues

I steam in my flat twists all the time. I did my normal mid-week steam treatment with a light mist of EVOO and 20 minutes under the steamer.

steamed in the steam room this week, 15 min. was going for 20 but couldn't see the clock. I used Giovanni Smooth as Silk. Very nice results. I have shiny moisturized twist out today. Not loving the shape of my twist out, but it feels awesome!

Yesterday was wash day but also a Henna day. After applying the Henna (Jamila) I got under my steamer for about an hour. After rinsing the Henna out I followed up with a deep conditioning treatment (I used Brown Butter Beauty Deep Conditioner) under the steamer for 20 minutes.

Thursday night I slept in AOHSR
The next day I added an oil on top of that..
then steamed for about 25 minutes.

My hair felt wonderful!

Thinking about steaming when I get home.
I want to do another indigo round then steam..

Thinking about it...
we shall see

I steamed with Homemade Banana Deep Conditioner (banana+oils+giovanni smooth as silk condish) last night. There's still little bits of banana left in my hair, hopefully its easier to pick out now its dry though :nono:
