Well I have short hair but who cares what people think. If you like your hair long, keep it long. if you want to try a short style try a wig to see if you like it. Just remember to cake out the combs in the wigs because they can cause breakage.

A woman's hair is her glory....Do not let others make you feel bad for what you have.... simply because they do not have it as well!

long hair is nothing to be ashamed of hunny! I understand how ppl could make you feel awkward by the statements they make, but dont let it get under your skin.

If you cut it should be because you want too, not because someone made you feel bad

They're only looking at you negatively because they don't think they can have hair that long. Do you think pepole of races who have an easier time growing long hair look at anyone with long hair like that?...No, because it isn't that serious.
You should really not let people's stares, good, bad or otherwise affect how you feel about your hair or how long you want it. You're a member here for a reason.
Grow on girl!

I started to feel self-conscious about my hair and now feel I should cut it. Even having my hair out and walking around town I sometimes feel like these women are just looking at me negatively. :perplexed

Do any of you feel this way?

I just use salty looks as verification that my hair game is tight.

...I used to feel that way sometimes, even around certain family members. But you should always just do what makes you feel happy and confident and not worry about other people's hang ups.

I didn't vote in the poll (it doesn't apply to me :lachen:), but I don't think you have anything to be self-conscious about.
The Asian people were probably talking about you because they probably don't see many black women with such long hair. If anything, I bet they were amazed.

As for your friend...I have no words. I'm sorry that she and her hair are going through some thangs, but she needs to stop the hate.
Because most of the time, when folks start in with that...oh, you should cut. Long hair is so outdated, it makes you look older, you should get a fade, :blah:...it's because they don't have any of their own and are jelly. And for whatever reason (laziness, lack of confidence, fear, pride, sheer wickedness?...idk, I don't pretend to understand what drives people), they think it's better to try to dull your shine than to bring themselves up to your level.

Be proud of your hair. It's beautiful! :yep:

Today, my friend and I went to a wig store to try some wigs on..more her than me. She's been having some hair issues lately and wanted a quick fix for those bad hair days and needing to rush out for work.

It was your typical Asian-owned AA beauty/wig store.

We walk in there and went straight for where the wigs were in the back. An Asian woman came to assist my friend. So she's picking out wigs and what not and while she was doing her thing, I saw this short-haired wig I wanted to try on.

For some reason though, I felt stupid. All these women in here with short hair looking to try some wigs because they barely have hair, and here I am with my MBL hair looking for a wig. But I reeeally wanted to try this particular wig on. It was cut into a bob with bangs, and the color combination was hot. So a different lady came to help me and when it came time to put the wig cap on, she was all, "Oohh, look at all this hair." And talking in a different language and had to ask another lady to help put this wig on. I felt embarrassed. It seemed like such a big deal.

Anyway, later in the day my friend was telling me I should cut my hair; that it's gotten too long and the long-haired look was getting old and boring on me. I started to feel self-conscious about my hair and now feel I should cut it. Even having my hair out and walking around town I sometimes feel like these women are just looking at me negatively. :perplexed

Don't cut your hair. They are probably just jealous. Rock it. Btw, you're really pretty.:yep:

You probably really wanted to grow your hair out at some point in time and now you have. Will you be happier when your hair looks just like your 'friends?' Do you mean you would cut off your hair because someone was looking at it and making comments? Wow. Now I am looking at you and going.......what?....you're serious?

Put the scizzors down.

my friend was telling me I should cut my hair; that it's gotten too long and the long-haired look was getting old and boring on me.

Pft.. That's ridiculous. Sounds like something that should be mentioned in the "Excuses people make to justify their short and/or damaged hair" thread. :ohwell:

I'm not sure what your friend's hair is like, but I'm at least 95% sure if she had what you had, she wouldn't be singing the same tune.

Your hair is gorgeous. Be proud of it :)

Oh man, the last time I went in to a BSS store with my hair down (I was letting it finish off drying), this one lady kept giving me the serious stinkeye. I was standing in one of the aisles looking at the V05 conditioner prices and she was all
thmad.gif
and sucking her teeth.

Now, I don't why, maybe it had something to do with her hair looking like a pack of rats had been chewing on it? Maybe she thought I was someone else? Maybe she didn't like the look of me? In any case, I snatched my conditioner and hightailed it to the register. Just in case she decided to cut my hair or something. Absolutely last time I go into a BSS with my hair down. Already, a lot of those women are going in there all frustrated about their own hair, they don't need me in there with my pretty curls and have them thinking I'm showing off or flaunting.

Don't fall for that okeedoke!! It's just crabs in a barrel.....interesting that you are in Maryland..LOL

Oh please honey don't listen to those people I have had long hair for the majority of my life and I cannot tell you how many Hating arse people have told me to cut it cause Oh its so nice to see you with something different. Okay you never tell Mrs. Patel to cut her hair why are you suggesting that I cut my. Skip them tell them to kick rocks and that is why one buys wigs is to change it up one in a while.

People make me sick.

lol sorry, but please girl. do you really giva dam what people think? really? c'mon.

i think you would be even more upset if you cut your hair becuase of what haters think. they just envy you, thats all.

your hair is lovely! I'm off to stalk your fotki.....

some comments need to go in one ear & out the other. If you want to change it up, rock your short wig, or any wig. Don't ever feel pressured to cut such healthy looking hair.

Don't cut your hair for no one. Besides, "the long hair is played out" line is debatable...I mean really, who says that? How can it be played out if you rarely see women (outside of LHCF lol) with long hair? I wish someone would tell that to the weave wearers if its true. Your hair is beautiful and so are you:yep: Don't be self conscious because a few ill-mannered looks and comments.

I wonder if the 'friends' would cut their hair if it got to your length, because it's 'boring?'

I guess we'll never know...

I don't really care how other women look at me when I go out in public. Majority of black women have short hair. Having long hair is different and I like being different.:yep:

By the way, what kind of wig did your friend get? Was it long haired or short? If she got a long haired one I would definitely say she's jealous.

I agree w/ the bolded, I have a 'friend' like that who wears weaves for the long hair effect (not because it's a protective style) yet if someone ask her what she think they should do to their hair she relpies "cut it" without fail :nono:

ETA: I didn't vote, I'm don't consider my hair long at this point, but when it gets to BSL etc, i'll be flaunting it like it's no ones business .:yep:

All those women in there buying wigs (your friend included) but it's you that needs a cut?nonsense. All that 18 inch remy on sale but your real hair is played out? Yeah, ok.

How long was the wig that she ended up buying may I ask?

Girl, dont be ashamed. If anything, you should feel proud that you have the luxury of wearing wigs for fun, and not out of necessity.

And please do not listen to your friend, I see "HATE" written all over her comment. IF you want to try a new look, weave it up or wig it! You're gorgeous the way you are.

First off, I adore your hair esp. it curly. I'm the last one to ever call someone a hater, but I'm not sure your friend is coming from a sincere place based on the comments she made to you. How long is her hair?

I agree with the others it your hair wear it, love it. I'm older and had friends tell me that older women don't wear long hair because of the maintenance. When people make these statements I always ask can I see the rule books because it unknown to me. I will have long hair because I love to style my hair different. There will always be someone out there with negative comments, blow them off your hair is beautiful!

PLEASE!!! don't cut your hair, it is beautiful curly and straight...I agree with Barbie 83 when she said that at least you can wear wigs just to change it up and not out of necessity. Don't be bothered by other people's looks, the majority of them are jealous and that might even include your friend. I can't stand people like that...that is really played.

Girl....don't pay them any mind....just ask them would they like a glass and some ice cubes for their haterade and keep it moving lol
