Rant:Only taking advice from the longer hair board members.....

Didn't know people actually took length into consideration (thats ok if you do I'm not here to judge), I just assume pretty much everyone here been around long enough for me to at least consider their advice. Whether it sounds logical or practical is how I make my choice to follow the advice. Like someone said earlier everyone's hair is different anyway.

this was my thread last summer, where this idea was suggested to me, but there is a pretty new thread somewhere specifically on twirling the ends, I think still by the OP.

http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=490378&page=2

basically, I now wash in sections, air dry in braids, seal the ends with wheat germ oil (or any other ceramide oil like sunflower or anything) and twirl them, and I make sure my leave in has a ph of 4 to 5.5 (or I spritz my ends with stuff that has that ph).

Don't get offended.

Look at it this way. Would you take sex advice from a virgin? Would you take medical advice from a lawyer? You do have to look at the messenger. Nothing to get worked up over.

THANK YOU!!! If I want hair down to my a$$, then I'm gonna seek advice from a woman with hair down to her a$$!

Myjourney2009,

Did someone actually respond to you in a hair thread saying something like, "I'm not taking your advice because you're hair isn't long"? I'm just wondering how do you know that ladies are not taking your advice? Just wondering...

I'm wondering too because unless a person catergorically says I'm not taking your advice how can you tell? I take advice from anyone as far as it that sounds reasonable.

yea I hate the whole little clique thing that goes on. I feel like I'm in high school when I come here at times. I notice when you do ask for advice sometime ppl can be condescending when giving it. People don't seem too friendly here. I asked a question about a wig once and got referred to BHM.. umm really? I notice if you have a perm u kinda get treated funny as well.

Don't know if it's been said or not but we have to also
take into account that people with LONNNNNG healthy
hair OFTEN cut it all. That's why I look at healthy over
length. I don't know if the person bc'ed before lhcf or
just wanted a change from jump they may have had
hl or longer and cut up to nl. So in short I hope we
all can take advice that seems sound and aligns with
our own research.

well if you walked into Lowe's asking about cheeseburgers they'd probably send you to McDonald's. I know whenever people ask questions about weaves and wigs here I tell them to go to BHM because that is your best bet for finding answers to simple questions about wigs and weaves.

One way to tell is if you post advice and weeks later someone else
says the same thing and they respond specifically to the second person
saying "wow thanks so much I never knew that I'll do it asap"
shrugs I've seen it

Yea but there are a lot of women here who wear wigs for protective styles and women who have just transitioned wear them as well. I have seen a lot of post from wig wearers here. Its was a simple question about the hair texture of a wig. If I wanted answers from ppl over at BHM then I could have posted it over there. Anywho, it was a lady nice enough here to pm and help me out. It would be easy for someone to take the first sentence in your response as condescending and thats exactly what I am talking about (not saying that you are trying to be)

Well I don't really care to take advice from people with a hair type different from mine. For example, I'd rather take advice about wash and go techniques from a fellow type 4 rather than a type 3.

If everyone is raving about a certain product, I am going to pay more attention to the reviews from type 4s, than type 2s and 3s.

If a type 3 makes a thread to show off a roller set, I will compliment them, but I won't ask them how they did it because the technique probably won't work on my hair.

It's not personal. I just feel better after seeing a product or style work on someone with hair like mine.

Also, just because they aren't hitting the thanks button or posting a reply every time you give advice doesn't mean they aren't taking it.

Let this opinion or feeling not keep you from sharing, girl. Some will, some won't, so what. The fact that you're willing to share says a lot about you. I say thank you for all those who have not. Don't get jaded. Just keep doing what you're doing. Yours is one of my fave heads to drool over. Now, if your head was busted...:look: ...well... let me just say, health over length ANY day. Now fling that hair and keep it movin, mama. :yep:

I take advice from anyone as long as it's sensible and sounds like something I'd do. I really don't give a crap how long or short someone's hair is, if your advice is logical and easy, I'll do it. :look: :perplexed Although, I do respect those though that follow the advice of longer haired ladies if that's what they want to achieve. It's even in The Secret, if you have the CDs and listen to them; disregard those that don't have what you want and focus on those that do. :yep:

With that being said, I think people take LHCF and the goals for longer hair too seriously. People need to get over it and learn that they don't need to snub others over the internet if they have weaves, relaxed hair, short hair, etc. because it's not that serious.

BTW Myjourney2009, I do plan to try the product you recommended to me for swimming in the summer. You know my regimen but I thought it was sweet that you shared the product with me and noted that I love collagen protein. Your advice is not in vain, someone out there will recognize it.

I forgot to add, most of the time I give my advice ANYWAY LOL. I'm just that bold that I don't care about online cliques and I don't notice if it's ignored. I like getting my opinion OUT THERE.

when i joined my goal was longer hair. and that's who's albums i looked at and advice i tried. eveyone who's hair was longer then mine because that's where I was trying to be!!
nowdays its all about regular stuff (self relax, trims, rollerset etc) so i seek advice from whomever.

OP- I hope you don't take offense to this, but it seems like you may be one of those people who likes to give advice, but also wants to control how the advice is absorbed or used.

I say this because I used to be this way....not on the board, but in real life. It's only with a little age and living that I've learned that I can't control what people do with the advice I give them- which is why I need to remember why I'm giving the advice in the first place- to be helpful. Nothing more; nothing less. What the person decides to do after the fact is solely up to them.

No offense taken and you couldn't be more wrong. I am very easy going when I give suggestions/advice. A person can take them or leave them because this is how I operate when getting advice or suggestions/advice.

I actually had someone tell me once "well why ask for my advice if you werent going to use it". I said "well I mulled it around in my head and decided it was not going to work for me." They dam near had a conniption and I went about my merry way. That to me is controling; so not me

You're welcome.
Girl I give advice wherever I am and with complete abandon. Thanks

I tend to pay more attention to people with healthy, shiny hair that's medium to medium long length. I know this is LHCF and we're supposed to act like genetics aren't important, but they are. When someone has 3x/WL hair and you check their fotki and they've had long hair all their life... I tend to discount the relevance of their posts (to me).

Sometimes i give advice and someone says the samething but explained it better.it happens all the time.

Personally i dont tend to take certain types of advice from certain people.for example i will not take reggie advice from a new person because i find they usually are doing too much but i would be open to try a technique that make sense that i may or may not have heard of. Or i'm not taking detangling advice from some one with a twa or necklength hair but i might try the product they suggested to define their curl.ive been here for a while so i tend to look for new ideas and techniques i havent tried.

I have taken advice from short and long busted hair and healthy. People here who have had setbacks can at least tell me what not to do! I usually look for consensus. I figure if more than a few people have tried something and recommends it then it may work for me as well. Most of the time I use advice from here and shared with friends/family but I don't always make a post about it or acknowledge with a thanks.

Bottom line, as others have previously stated, you have probably helped many more than you realize with your advice regardless of whether the person you directed your response to heeds it. Far more people lurk the boards than are members. These same people share the advice they read here on other boards. People will always have their favorites and some tune out anything not contributed by their hair god. But, who cares?

Whatever you give of yourself, advice, help, etc. let it go with no expectation of return. I have learned that the hard way. Trust me, you will feel much better.

Has anyone else noticed this.:look::look:

Yes I am a bit annoyed why you ask well....

When someone asks for advice and I give it, I dam near get shut down. Let someone else come in another thread with similar suggestions and they are all over it. :perplexed

I might not have hair down my back but my hair is very healthy and darnit I feel my contributions are very good.

Rant over

Myjourney2009

Hi! Keep giving your advice..I'm still learning ever-day..LIFE IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE...

*I take advice from any-one/doesn't matter if the hair is floor length or twa..I LOVE healthy hair at any length.....

*If some-one pm me..I have no problem responding...Plenty of LHCF sisters have & still help me...I love to return the favor....

Happy Hair Growing!

OP, I understand your frustration and I also understand why people do that (only take other long haired members advice). I guess it's kind of like a fat person giving advice on fitness/nutrition. Of course, the knowledge can be there--but ppl can't get past not seeing the "proof". Just realize there are probably other members whose hair is shorter than yours who may be hanging on your every word, so don't stop giving good advice!

AS far as taking advice from people...

Some people need to think and ask questions before just taking someone's advise.

Here is my example:

A certain former member who have long thick relaxed almost bone straight hair stated that naturals should use a certain kind a hair roller especially a roller made in Europe.

Everybody was like yeah I want one.

But how come nobody stopped and ask "How would she know?". She is not natural. She is not texlaxed. Yes, her hair looks great but she is not speaking from experience regarding the subject.

From my own experiences, as a roller setter as a natural and as a texlax (my hair never relax straight), I knew she was not totally correct but if I would have something I would have been ignored.

So I listen to most people and I may question some things to see why they came up with that because I believe black hair is diverse and there is more than one right answer. Some tips will work better for thicker hair and others that have thinner hair.

I keep hearing rumblings about some "clique" on LHCF.....I know I'm not in it , but I have nooooo idea who this group encompasses. I DO notice there are a few people who take this site to heart too much and read too much into post/thanks counts....

My hair is short, so I generally do not give any advice. Unless its something basic like a product review or something.

I don't really look at length as a basis of anyone's advice. I look more at folks w/similar textures/thickness of my own hair; and at people who struggled in the past and this is their first time in life having long and/or healthy hair. I mean let's be real, some people can do whatever (or nothing at all) to their hair and it will easily get super long. Their advice won't help me bc that is not the case for my hair.
