Rant:Only taking advice from the longer hair board members.....

I'll take advice from anyone if it sounds like good advice. Am I slightly more excited if the advice comes from a 4a natural whose hair is at my goal length? YUP :yep: Sowwy! That's just the way it is....:look:

To be honest, although I participate in a lot of threads, you will RARELY see me spouting out knowledge about retention. Although my hair has grown from a nape/chin-length bob to APL since I joined, even with several trims, I have not achieved the amazing lengths that many women have and I have had many minor setbacks. So, I hesitate to tell people what they should be doing as far as retention until I reach my own goals.

I do chime in on topics that I know about like rollersetting, braidouts on relaxed hair, certain products like Phyto, etc. I just feel weird giving someone with WL hair advice.

I feel your pain, though, OP. When I joined, I got so sick of "newbie" side comments and I feel like relaxed heads get the side eye for commenting on any natural hair threads (even ladies who formerly had long, healthy natural hair, but chose to go back to relaxing!). I try to skip over threads that specify a certain hair length or texture when the question has nothing to do with length or texture. But, I may have been guilty of starting a length-based thread or two myself.

I've tried things and advice from many people whose hair isn't as long as mine. It doesn't matter if they are relaxed, natural, 1a or 10z. If it makes sense to me, I will try it.

Solitude you're just the person who can give advice to others based on your own experience with set backs. It's always a good learning experience when I read someone's own personal set back regarding something they tried. I remember watching a Youtube video of a certain woman who had just taken out a weave, didn't detangle it, and when she shampooed she lost a ton of matted hair. Right there I learned that I need to detangle completely when out of braids or any kind of cornrowing.

I personally have shared some of my own set backs and if someone looks at my hair and decides not to take any of my advice coz it's not as long as someone else's, oh well. They might be missing out on some good info concerning a road block they might encounter down the road.

All I know is this - if someone who has NL natural hair and describes herself as a 4zzzzz says that <insert product/technique> melted through her tangles and knots, I'm ALL over it!

Girl there are folks that don't want to take advice from others if they have a certain hair type, length...what have you. I want to tell some folks sit down, you have 5 strands of hair that's touching the back of your knees, don't get excited.

You know, I never thought of it that way. Hmmm...

How did I miss this thread yesterday. It's already 5 pages -- shoot! Let me catch up.

@Myjourney2009, let me publicly say - without your wisdom when I first joined the boards and even now a year later, I would not be as far along as I am. I am thankful for your e-friendship, knowledge and patience. I've secretly labeled you as my hair buddy because by far, you've assisted me the most. So nice of me to let you know, right? (smile) You're one of the few (including @halee_J , @Supergirl, @Solitude and @JJamiah) that took to me when I first joined, providing good quality advice step by step direction on how to recover from slight setbacks. Other ladies helped me here and there but you ladies consistently stayed with me throughout and never just provided me with one liners like many did and I'm thankful and grateful for you ladies. I'll be your student for life, if you let me! You're very knowledgeable.

I look for knowledge, not length...perhaps one chooses shorter length, rather than being unable to growth length.

*coming back to read the rest of the pages later*

Hi! Keep giving your advice..I'm still learning ever-day..LIFE IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE...

*I take advice from any-one/doesn't matter if the hair is floor length or twa..I LOVE healthy hair at any length.....

*If some-one pm me..I have no problem responding...Plenty of LHCF sisters have & still help me...I love to return the favor....

Happy Hair Growing!
Yes - you've been most helpful with product reviews. Thank you!

Another thing is, when my hair was to my waist, thick and healthy, people didn't take my advice. I have a friend who keeps saying how she gets soooo many split ends and her hair still hasn't grown passed her shoulders. I've been trying to tell her to deep condition for 5 years when she asks for hair tips. She says she doesn't feel like sitting under the dryer and being bothered with it. Other people wouldn't take any hair advice that they asked for because they said I just naturally had great hair so my advice wouldn't work for them. All that to say, don't take it personal. People are people and they have their own hang ups and issues.

Why are you annoyed? People are entitled to take advice from whomever they choose. I am 4a/4b and I am not going to take advice from a 3a/b. Not to say it couldn't work but I don't feel that it's likely. Plus, they could be taking advice from who they feel is their hair ideal. No biggie.

There are so many lurkers on this forum, the amount of "thanks" and responses isn't the best method to gauge how well your advice is being taken.

Keep doing you, and KIM :yep:

I think some people value length over healthy hair...they don't care if your hair is healthy, they just want to know what people with long hair did to get it that way. Not very smart, but I can see where they're coming from.

I'm going to be honest and say that I only take advice from people who's hair I want my hair to look like, health and length wise. I listen to people who had discipline and stayed on track with their hair.

Some of the popular members on here don't have the best hair practices so I stick to who I can trust. I'm very picky and there's only 3 that I listen to and one no longer posts (dlewis).
