Brittanynic,
You are a very pretty girl. Don't let ur mom get you down. I don't even think your mom means harm...I think that she's subconsciously trying to subject you to the type of reactions she believes ppl at school will give.
Your big chop will be a brave move b/c many women are too afraid of what others will say. Believe me, I've already been there 3 times in my life time.
My mom gave me a big chop at 5 years old and that was terrible b/c I was dealing with children.
I did it to myself in highschool and I loved it! I didn't think it would "fit" me but it did. I did it again in college but that didn't last for long b/c I was impatient with waiting. Whatever the case, the style was different initially and took about a day go get used to. After that I was just inlove with the cut. Also, others became inlove with it too...that's partly because I exuded confidence; that's something that you must do! Hold your head up (even if you're not yet comfortable with the style).
I agree with the others who have advised u to try a pixie wig first. The only problem is, a pixie wig is not the same as natural wig. You dig? I believe ppl are more likely to react ignorantly to natural hair than to relaxed hair, regardless of length. So even if you wear a pixie wig (which are 99% "relaxed") you still wouldn't get the same reaction as would a TWA.
Hopefully you're more concerned with how you feel about the style rather than how others will react. Remember, people's opinions (good or bad) don't really matter. They are only opinions and are very subjective. You are You no matter what tom, dick, harry and sue believes is cute/ugly.
good luck on your journey...I may be joining you in a year or two
