My Mommy is mean...

Wow, sorry to hear that happened. But dont feel bad, your mom is not the only woman that equates longer hair with beauty. I am just sorry to hear that u came under the fire. But if u want to cut your hair I say go for it!

Brittanynic,
You are a very pretty girl. Don't let ur mom get you down. I don't even think your mom means harm...I think that she's subconsciously trying to subject you to the type of reactions she believes ppl at school will give.

Your big chop will be a brave move b/c many women are too afraid of what others will say. Believe me, I've already been there 3 times in my life time.

My mom gave me a big chop at 5 years old and that was terrible b/c I was dealing with children.

I did it to myself in highschool and I loved it! I didn't think it would "fit" me but it did. I did it again in college but that didn't last for long b/c I was impatient with waiting. Whatever the case, the style was different initially and took about a day go get used to. After that I was just inlove with the cut. Also, others became inlove with it too...that's partly because I exuded confidence; that's something that you must do! Hold your head up (even if you're not yet comfortable with the style).

I agree with the others who have advised u to try a pixie wig first. The only problem is, a pixie wig is not the same as natural wig. You dig? I believe ppl are more likely to react ignorantly to natural hair than to relaxed hair, regardless of length. So even if you wear a pixie wig (which are 99% "relaxed") you still wouldn't get the same reaction as would a TWA.

Hopefully you're more concerned with how you feel about the style rather than how others will react. Remember, people's opinions (good or bad) don't really matter. They are only opinions and are very subjective. You are You no matter what tom, dick, harry and sue believes is cute/ugly.

good luck on your journey...I may be joining you in a year or two

It will take some time for your mom to get used to it ...but i'm sure she will come around eventually!

Ditto. Once she sees how great you look, she'll get it. You know how long hair is valued among black women, she's probably proud of your hair and feels sentimental about you cutting it off. But you are a pretty girl and I 'm sure you can rock a short haircut no problem.

Thanks to all you ladies for your responses and concern. I love it here! Anyway, I know why I want to do the BC and I am very excited about my hair. Althougth I do admire the ladies here, they are not living my life and don't have the hear my mom, so I am not doing this because everyone else is doing it. I am not worried about what others will say about me, even my mother. I was just so surprised that my mom was acting so crazy. Now that I think about it, its kind of funny. She sounded to recidulous throwing all kinds of comments out to change my mind. I am glad she is concerned but I will have to tell her that I respect her opinion and am glad that she cares so much but her opinion is no longer needed. I will however try on a wig to see how it looks but I know it won't give me the same effect of the twa. But, I am sure it will look nice.
