OP, I'd take it as a compliment. When I had long hair in eight grade, people always asked me if it was mine.

Too bad that my hair broke off.

I know! Every BSS has an extensive wig and weave selection. I am usually the only person in the store buying styling products! Everyone else is buying hair!

Tell me about it! I feel like I'm walking in a foreign country in the hair product section sometimes at "regular" BSS. Most of the time, I'm the only one in that section - with hair! Its a shame that even one of the store owners/cashiers commented that my hair was beautiful and that its good I don't use their weaves. She said this in front of a few women with hair in their hands.

Several Times!!! I will share a few:

A looooong time ago I was in a class and this girl asked if I was wearing a weave. I said no and she proceeded to dig her fingers in my hair. She was so embarrassed.

When I was a teenager, I wore my hair shaved on one side similar to Cassie's hair. People would say my hair was different textures and accuse me of wearing weaves.

When I was younger and guys would hit on me, if I ignored them they would accuse me of wearing a weave - in a not so nice way.

I have had several uninvited people, at different times, finger through my hair to prove it was a weave.

I find it amusing. When I was younger, I would take it personal. At one point, I wore bobs and kept the back of my head shaved because I got tired of being hassled. Even my former stylist would say: "I know you hate weaves because your hair looks fake." erplexed

When my hair was waist length it happened ALL the time. It was so annoying and I got it from all races, blacks, whites, Asians etc. Sometimes black females would often make the nastiest comments among themselves like "I wonder what weave she went and got". I preferred people to simply ask vs talking out loud in levels you could hear. But then too much asking would get annoying. And then came the haters. I had so many haters. I was like come on now! I would even try to help my sistas out and give them pointers on how to grow their hair long and so forth. Last year I cut my hair shoulder length. These days I cannot decide what I want to do with it. Should I grow it long again, or grow it mid length or cut it off and go natural. I love having long hair but it is a double edged sword when you are a black woman. All I can say is put your armor on and keep it on. Good luck!

People think my half wig is my hair all the time. I made it from EP hair and I put little or no heat on it so it has a kinky straight look

Back in high school I had an assymetrical SL bob and people used to ask if it was my real hair. And yes, they'd try to touch my hair and feel for tracks. And I could just feel the eyes staring at the back of my head in class, lol. I went to a really..."urban" school and most of them girls had been relaxing since preschool and had really tore up hair. So even tho my hair wasn't long, the thickness, health, precision cut and swang made folks think it was fake.

Girl the novelty wears off fast. At least it did for me and then after I grew it waist length I was like..........well what can I do with it? Most of the time it was back in a pony tail. I started chopping it more and more. It was kinda funny. You often think the grass is greener on the other side and for a while it is. I will tell you it is fun being able to sling long hair but long hair is high maintenance. I remember getting strands stuck in my car window while rolling the window up. Some would get caught in the car door and I wouldn't even know it until I moved head and the hair would snap..........OUCH. Doing it became tiring and stylists didn't want to be bother with it and would charge you all this extra money just beause it was long. It was crazy but fun. You'll see. Oh...........did I mention detangling???

I should mention to the OP, we as blacks have been our own worst enemy though. The constant wearing weaves has rendered the idea that black hair doesn't grow and if it is that long it must be fake. I try my best to educate sistas about taking care of their hair and growing it long so that many won't be dependant on these weaves. It's gotten to the point where weaves define us now and it's sad.

I'd only wear it out straight and down maybe 10 times a year or so. I'm vain, so it will take a really long time for the novelty to wear off for me. I'd also like to use it as the opportunity to let people know that you don't have to be a certain ethnicity or have certain hair types for your hair to grow long and healthy. I'm probably delusional in thinking people will listen, they'll prob still walk away muttering under their breath "that heaux lying, she gots to be mixed with something!"

I'd also like to use it as the opportunity to let people know that you don't have to be a certain ethnicity or have certain hair types for your hair to grow long and healthy. I'm thinking of going natural and I'm on my journey to stretch my relaxers to get a feel for how this may go. I'm excited yet nervous! Back to the long hair..............you'll love it, no doubt but honey there will come a time where you will be like............okay through with this. LOL! Glad to see you are representing. I'm not sure why people think only mixed hair can grow. My hair in it's natural state is course and grows like weeds so that debunks the age old myth that only mixed hair grows. I'm not sure how old you are but do you know who Mae Jemison is? Now that's a sista that was representing long before natural was in and her hair ain't mixed yet looks great. I saw her recently and she is still natural and the hair looks awesome and so does she.
