Hair regrets

What was the worst thing you did to your hair? I'll go first. The worst thing I did to my hair was putting a weave in. My hair now has breakage and is very, very dry. I can't wait till I take it out and wear my hair natural. :D

Well....
1) Allowing fools to do my relaxers...:nono: I was the FOOL TO ALLOW IT!
2) Not taking control of my own hair from jump!!:naughty:
3) Not seeking help from the first time I saw TROUBLE:whyme:
4) Not taking care of my health:ill:
5) Not properly utilizing the internet for information:user:
6) Not stretching my relaxers:(
7) Not learning more of moisturizers:ohwell:
8) Not linking my inner health to my outer health & appearance:brainy:
9) Not getting enough sleep to ensure my body's ability to regenerate properly & fully:sleeping:
10) Being too CHEAP to take care of health! Always believing that one can take care of self for little to nothing at all (NOT ALWAYS THE CASE!):spank:

But I'm slowly learning! :look:

Don't worry the dryness will go away. Just deep condition every week or twice a week if you can and use moisturizing products.

I had the same problem except I had braids in for 3 months.

I agree with this. Many people do not realize that our insides have to be healthy and nourished in order to produce outside beauty. I'm so glad that I came to this realization.

The biggest mistake that I made with my hair was thinking I could relax it post 7-8 weeks. Not only did I relax the new growth but over some of the relaxed portions as well. :( I will never do that again. My hair broke so bad, it's finally getting better.

The worst things I ever done to my hair...

In the fall of 2002, I got my hair highlighted...they were a bright gold color. The lady that did it didn't do them right. I had sections of hair that were colored, not just highlighted! So a month later, I got a permanent black color to go over all my hair. Then in March of 2004, I bought Loreal Feria permanent color (some brownish color). This made my hair so dry all the time. In July, I used Nice & Easy permanent color to go over that!
Another big mistake was cutting my passed shoulder length hair to a layered mid-neck length cut. I had suffered major shedding from taking Accutane and thought getting a layered cut would make it look thicker.
Also, my mom used to relax my entire hair shaft during all this time! But since finding the LHCF, my hair has improved and recovered greatly. :yep:

I always regret my big chops; I've had many, but the worst was a few years ago when my hair was about 3 inches below bra-strap. I woke up around 2 in the morning, put my hair in a scrunchy about at my shounlders and just cut...about 10 inches off. That wasn't enough, kept getting big chops, til I was finally down to a Halle berry cut again.

I just hate sitting under the hair dryer, but thank God for all of the ladies here, who recommended getting a Pibbs. I'm good now ;)

My hair would always grow and then break; grow and break. It repeated this cycle for many, many years. I regret that I never really got down to the bottom of my breakage problems.

I regret that I never paid real attention to my hair..... :(

Finding LHCF helped me to realize my bad habits: relaxing my whole length every 4-6 weeks was the big one.(I did this for years!) Funny thing is, I would go to the salon sometimes and they would touchup the roots, my sister(stylist) would just do the roots and I STILL would cover my hair with relaxer! No one EVER told me different.

I regret keeping the back shaved. It has a hard time growing in now. It grows at a snails pace.

Ditto!

And I regret 7th grade, when I lived with my dad and I hot curled my hair with spritz and Golden Hot curlers because I had no one there to stop me. By the end of the school year, my hair was 1 inch long... NO KIDDING.

I regret getting highlights once. She bascially colored my hair. My hair got so damaged from that. I have learned to love my natural hair color...

I regret gluing in weave from ages 14 to about 17. Let me just tell you that I basically pulled all of my hair out. And the little hair that I did have, I would spray Pump it Up spritz on it and curl it while the spritz was still wet! Can you say Snap..Crackle...Pop? That amounted to major breakage. I also regret cutting in my hair so much. From 18 to 22 I wore sew-ins mostly, and that's why my hair is the length it is now (about 2-3 inches from brastrap). However, sometimes when I would take out my weave, I would just cut about 2 inches off my hair just because. I thought I was getting rid of damage (no damage really since it was sewed in). My hair could probably be much longer now!

I also regret my big chops. I would get bored and take it out on my hair. It's funny every time I cut my hair I would always want my long hair back, and then before you know it I would be cutting it again. I have officially retired my scissors, except for trims.

Getting my hair relaxed, and then following up with color, it was way too harsh for my hair and caused major breakage. I still have nightmares of the day I noticed my hair was gone.

Using heat and I mean sizzling hot heat to style my hair daily. Actually I did not notice any damage, except for the 1 time my hair was still attached to the curling iron, the heat settings went up to 20, and I regularly used it at 18-20.

Allowing so called professionals to advise me what was best for my hair.

Not embracing my natural hair sooner, I would love to be able to say my hair is natural, yet I was straightening it almost everyday. I love my hair straight, however, now that I have experimented more with my hair, I love the variety I can achieve without heat.

My hair regrets *geesh* I have so many I dont know
where to start. :ohwell:

I regret blow drying, flat ironing, and then curling my hair everyday .....
I regret letting my friend perm my hair twice in 1 day ...
(the first one didnt take, she suggested we do another)
I regret cutting my hair whenever I had a bad hair day .....
I regret getting micro braids ......
I regret snatching a comb through my wet tangled hair .....
I regret never covering my hair at night when I slept .....
I regret not washing my hair except for on "perm" days .....
I regret using the thickest hair grease I could find .....

I could go on but If I did I dont think I would be able to stop :look:

I regret trying to look cute during my 3 years of "shacking up". For example:

Not covering hair at night
Keeping styles/weaves for long periods of time without washing
Cutting my hair in front of him to make it seem like I was the reason it wasn't growing instead of the truth which was that it was falling out due to damage! LOL!

Other issues:

Using a blow dryer with a comb attachment
NEVER deep conditioning my hair
Relaxing the same day as I removed braids/cornrows/weaves
Brushing, toasting, coloring, snipping my hair to make it blend with false hair (resulted in thin edges)
Brushing altogether
Drinking Coca Cola and eating Snickers bars like it was going out of style
NEVER drinking water
Thinking it was a good thing for cornrows to be tight (longer lasting)
Washing hair like the women in the Pantene commercial (LOADS of breakage due to tangles)
Using the prescribed shampoo for seborrheic dermatitis (dry hair)
Not taking a multivitamin
Thinking my hair would never grow

Yes, I have come from FAR!!!

I regret getting a relaxer everytime I had a hint of newgrowth.
I regret allowing my hair to be relaxed from roots to ends my last three relaxers, because the stylist said "I needed it."
I regret not moisturing my hair at all. I didn't realize oil sheen was not a moisturizer.
I regret never covering my hair at night.
These are only my regrets for the past couple of years. If i went back any further than that this post would take up three pages!

I mainly regret not moisturizing my hair enough, becuase i thought it would weigh down the style. I also regret coloring my hair then deciding i should stop relaxing for more healthier hair. I know now that is what caused my hair to break sooo much. I mean two years ago i was practically bald, it felt like i had like 20 strands of hair LOL. But i am on the road to recovery thanks to this board! my hair is now collarbone length on the way to bsl in no time!

I regret going to a scissor happy hairstylist for over a year.
I regret allowing a bad stylist to bleach my hair twice because the color didn't take.
I regret allowing another stylist to flat iron my hair with a dirty, overheated iron to the point that I could smell my burned hair for days. And I wondered why my hair was getting thinner...

And most of all --

I regret that I was reading LHCF for a year before I actually started applying most of the techniques here. What's the point of a bun if you haven't moisturised the ends?

- Letting stylists cut my hair instead of trimming it a few years ago
- Being totally dependent on stylists back then
- Relaxing every 4-6 weeks

I regret over processing my hair while self relaxing.
I regret chair hopping when I was going to a salon. Unfortunately, I could not find a stylist I was completely happy with. Still trying...
I regret allowing scissor happy stylist to lie to me about just clipping off my ends and getting up a with a new haircut. This has happened more than once, you would think I would have learned the first time.
I regret letting the same stylist take my hair out twice. I had to go from past shoulder length to a chin length bob (both times).
Finally, I regret trying Affirm (sensitive scalp and Fiberguard), both of which cause excessive shedding and noticable thinning of my hair.

I plan to deep condition with Motions silk protein. I didn't want to do it more than twice a month because I thought there might be too much protein.

My all time BIGGEST hair regret was getting my hair braided when I was in the 9th grade. One of the braids took a patch of my hair out and that patch has filled in but it's thin. My other regret is letting my mom detangle my hair after taking out my braids (she pulled and tugged and raakkeedd the comb through my tangles and knots; I ended up w/ a huge ball of hair sitting on the dresser), and then relaxing it the same day. :nono::spank:

We both didn't know any better; it was my absolute first and last time wearing braids. My hair was sooo short, super short, my hair had never been that short in my life (except when I was a baby) I felt horrible and bald-headed. :cry3:

Regrets!!!!!!

1. Getting a Juicy Curl (Jeerry)

2. Letting this man at Jackson's Hair Salon on Wilson Ave. in Mobile, AL do my first relaxer after taking braids out! He put a SUPER Creme of Nature RElaxer on my hair ( my hair breaks down quickly and I have a sensitive scalp). I was in the fifth grade and my hair was BSL and when I left I had a ear length mushroom!

3. Went to college and was on dance team and we had a hair sponsor. She braided my hair and then glued the track on top of the braid!!!!!

4. Getting my hair cut all the way off shorter than Fantasia.

5. Letting "The Purple Door" in Atlanta, GA on MLK do my color. They used a 40 volume (very harsh on your hair).

6. Not wearing my natural color (I like now)

7. And last but sertainly not least taking so long to find LHCF

-I regret wearing micrbraids for 4-5 month at a time
-Letting a stylist "foil" highlites in even after I asked her to just pull a few thin pieces through a cap.. I came out w/ gold hair.
-I regret not taking care of my gold hair. :ohwell:
-Not properly moisturizing, thinking oil sheen was enough.
-Not washing my hair enough thinking once a week was good, but then waiting b/c "my hair was just starting to look the way I wanted"
-Applying perm to all my hair when I was self-relaxing in HS
-Spending more money on weaves to cover up my damaged hair, then to treat it.
-completely trusting stylist, thinking they knew what was best.

I regret wearing a glue in weave through out my senior year...:(
it left me with no edges, the crown of my hair broken
thin hair

After that, I cut my hair, had it relaxed, and started visiting and taking advice from the hair boards last summer.

Biggest Regret:

Asking a stylist for highlights. He bleached my whole head instead. It was yellow. Then, two days later I used box color to die my hair jet black again. It turned out purple. Then eventually fell out gradually. Luckily by the time it started growing back I got the "Nia Long relaxer box" haircut that was in style at the time (2000).

My biggest regret was cutting my almost BSL hair to a chin length bob for no other reason than I was bored.

Then of course there was my touch up disaster this year. My regret was I allowed her to turn me away from the mirror so I couldn't see what she was doing. I ended up with a no lye box perm instead of the lye relaxer I requested.

I regret not wearing protective styles when I really need to
Getting invisible braids
letting some fool tell me that I needed a relaxer every 4 weeks.
using blue black jazzing rinses
doing daily co washes (hair broke off)
cornrowing my hair while wet for braid (damaged my ends and ended up with a big chop)

i colored my hair 3 time in a 48 hour period when i was a jr in high school lol surprisingly my hair didn't ge damaged at all.

It was damaged, you just did not know it.

In high school, I had my roots pressed with a hot-comb once a week and flat ironed my hair every single morning before school ... on top of relaxer.

Needless to say, it wasn't long before I went from bra-strap length to chin-length. :ohwell:
