BlackBarbie's 2 year transitioning anniversary (PIC HEAVY...sorry)

Well, I made it!!!! Yesterday marked the 2 year anniversary of my transition. Prior to my transitioning, I swore by rollersets. I probably have gotten my hair blow dried and flat ironed maybe 2 or 3 times in my entire life (prior to transitioning). I knew that once I became natural, blowdrying and flat ironing would have to become regular parts of my life if I wanted straight hair (or so I thought). When I have gone to get my ends trimmed, I would let the stylist blow dry and curl it with the flat iron. I like the full look of a head full of curls because I am try to disguise the thin relaxed ends against the full natural hair.

I have found out a few things about my hair (and some products as well) that have convinced me to make an attempt to rollerset my hair. I have been using Giovanni Direct Leave In and coconut oil after I do my co-wash. I distribute through my hair via my denman brush and pull my hair back. When I hair dries, it is straight and I can actually comb through it. this made me try rollersetting it. (I did a flat twistout a week before to test my theory and see how smooth my roots would get)

I have 12 inches of natural hair and 10 inches of relaxed hair. Since my transition, I have been going to the salon every few months and getting 2 or 3 inches trimmed off. With the amount of relaxed ends I have left, I guess I will be transitioning for another 2 years:ohwell:

I am making an attempt to attach some pictures and I will upload them all at once. If I see that they are too big, I will come back and try to resize them. The first pic is when I flat twisted it last week. After I saw how smooth it was at the scalp, I was convinced that it would get just as smooth as if I rollerset it on magnetic rollers.....(excuse the dirty mirror.....it's a result of spraying product everywhere - including the mirror:grin:)

congrats. very nice. i know transitioning isn't easy and you're doing a great job

To be honest, the first 6 months were the hardest:sad:. There were many days when I kept asking myself what the heck I was doing. What made it so hard was how the new growth that came in was really wiry and stood out like a sore thumb from the relaxed hair. It made blending really hard. Now the relaxed portion is what sticks out like a sore thumb! The longest portions of relaxed hair on my head are about 10 inches long (I gauge it by the color; I last got color 2 weeks later than my last relaxer) and some sections in the back are completely natural.

Hi CandiceC:hiya2:
When I was trying to upload the pics, photobucket was showing where they were resized, but when I previewed the post, they still looked so huge! Thanks goodness they didn't come out big like the preview.

Straight up gorgeous:yep::yep::yep: I've always admired your hair with its lushness and beautiful color. You're showing us that black hair, whether double processed or transitioning can be healthy.

Thanks for the update.

I would at least like my hair to come to my shoulders unstretched. The thing with that is that it will be hard to tell where that is b/c the relaxed hair is weighing the natural hair down a little, so I know if I were to just chop 10 inches of relaxed hair off, I would have major shrinkage.

I think I will stick with my plan of going to the salon every few months and getting mini trims (when I grow 2 or 3 inches, I get 2 or 3 inches trimmed). This has at least kept my hair a little bit past BSL.
