Are you prettier now with longer hair?

I also think growing up as lil' brown skin girls in the US, we tend to look up to that blond hair blue eyed girl in class. For some she may not have been white or had blonde hair or blue eyes but she most certainly had long hair and might have been popular and might have gotten the attention of that boy...

So, in the depths of our minds, maybe just maybe we finally get to be...her.

i think my long hair makes me look better. i am just an average chick when my hair is shoulder length or shorter (been there, done that). AND...i think that women who wear long weaves feel the same way...otherwise, why wear them? ain't trying to hear that 'protective styling' b.s. either... LOL
u are quite beautiful sis.... :yep: don't let'em et it twisted:grin:

Its the entire package. Its all about what style works for you, being it short or long. If you love long hair then find styles that will compliment your face and vice versa, but most importantly you have to have awesome personality to pull any look off.

no. In my mind, I have prettier hair, thats about it. What is funny, I receive a ton of compliments with my hair slick back in a ponytail and not so much with it hanging long, or cut very short.

No. I actually think I look better with big curly shrunken hair (above shoulders) or a straight bob , than when it's straight and MBL. I'm always debating cutting it because of this. LHCF has turned me into a crazy hair grower.

I'm pretty with a TWA, or BSL hair, so that doesn't faze me; but I think I look sexier to men when my hair long and straight which IMO I look younger.

The title of this thread made me LOL!!!
I definitely feel a lot more sexier with the extra length...thats all Im gonna say about that..

INDEED! I LOL'd too. I have always worn my hair at least 2" past shoulder length or longer from 1st grade to Sept 2006 when I chopped my hair from MBL to an a'la Rihanna cut with 1" sides an only 4" in the top, but kept a relaxer. I loved the short cut, but it was too high-maintenance. I was used to slapping my long hair in a bun and going!

Since then I've BC'd twice (07/08 after 9 mo. trans. and then 01/11 after 18 mo. trans.), but I have gotten back to WL in between the 2 chops (longest my hair has ever been). I'm now back at a lil past APL, growing out, and I definitely feel sexier with long hair! I prefer no shorter than MBL, personally.

I also think long hair suits me b/c short hair draws more attention to how petite I am (5'2" and 122 lbs.), but the long hair keeps the attn off my size, lol...and my face shape goes better with long hair. Weird.

There is nothing prettier than confidence, so in my case, yep.

ETA: I ♥ short cuts and wear them often, just not fully shrunken afros on me. Maybe psychological.

My mom used to say a woman's hair is her beauty (glory), but I beg to differ. A woman who can shave her head bald and STILL look pretty/feminine is what I'd call beauty. IMO, hair hides imperfections - and sometimes ur beauty. I've seen pretty long haired girls look "not so pretty" in a short hair cut or hair pulled back in 1 bc she's got a funny shaped head, etc. But then there are pretty short haired girls that. look BLAH! with long hair.

I personally can rock the hell outta a short pixie cut. Growing my hair out now as a personal challenge. But I've worn my dream hair weaves, and while I felt sexy & glamourous... I feel prettiest with my hair short. I can see myself chopping it all off once I reach my hair goals, or wearing it back and outta my face majority of the time.

I think I look better with longer hair cause I'm not crazy about my facial features-never liked my jawline . When I did the BC lots of people asked why I cut my hair and it made me feel like it wasn't a good look. I've been told I look better with longer hair. :ohwell:

yes, I am prettier with longer voluminous hair. I have a tiny round peanut head and I look better with longer curls or with any hairstyle that adds volume period.

Super short flat hair is a no-go on me. and even bone straight long hair is a bad look for me.

The absolute worst I can do for my face shape is have a single layer of corn rows... not only is my head tiny and round... I have the nerve to have a hook in the back of my tiny little head.

Thank god I am a girl. Life would suck if I were a dude with a ceasar cut lol.

Hmm...Interesting, I've never had "short" hair, so I don't know...I think in my mind I look better with longer hair but who's to really know...

It's about how the hair frames your face. MBL blunt vs. mbl layered can yield as much or more of a difference than mbl vs. nl

I was just about to say this. Shorter hair cuts allow you to frame your face better and that aspect is usually more flattering to the top portion of the face (around the eyes and cheek bones).

Longer tends to allow women to look softer/more feminine because it hides the jawline. Especially when a woman is very slim and jaw does not have that much fat.

Men look more masculine when they are fit, and we see that strong wide jaw line. JMO.

ETA: I did not answer your question. The longer my hair gets, the prettier I look. Dag-on square jaw. :darkcloud:

nah homie you on your own with that one

As many of you have said that you think you look better with shorter hair, I wonder if at some point on this long hair journey, several us will cut our hair back to a shorter length.

↑ L.O.L mischka

I skipped most of the posts before posting...
I would think that if its a psychological thing it'd be because men typically have short hair & women typically long.

I think "pretty" is something you have or you don't, regardless of hair length. That said, I think ones attractiveness can vary depending on how they put themselves together. I think I am more attractive with longer hair. My head looks normal with long hair, but with short hair, it's big LOL

I've always been pretty confident, but longer and healthier hair has increased my confidence tenfold (not in an arrogant way). I'm not just focusing on hair, I'm trying to improve my skin, body and treating myself to nicer clothes too which is having such a positive effect on my outlook. I feel good and that shows.

LOL mischka!

I haven't psycho analyzed myself enough to know my true perception of beauty (which is different from the question asked) but I'd venture to say that most people's idea of beauty are mainly western, it's no secret (books, movies, documentaries etc. written about this.) At what point do we stray away from this thinking I don't know, AND whether we in fact completely stray away...I'm not so sure we do which is why the answers to this question is so interesting to me. Some folks answered questions that the OP didn't really ask! Our view of long hair vs. how do we FEEL about ourselves having long hair are different. Heck, even *I* took it on a different path with my answer (as I usually backwardly do lol)

Our perception of ourselves, how pretty we are and how it ties into long hair is revealing. Many black girls growing up have experienced the stockings on her head, swinging them and feeling, well, pretty. If this is not you, you are lucky! I know many girls whose ideas of beauty are very much tied into the western image of beauty which usually involves some sort of long flowing hair, whether it is curly, straight or kinky.

I vaguely remember a post by Sonce (Kemi21) which was really profound. Something about her feelings when she decided to straighten her hair, how if, even just for a fleeting moment, she felt like she had 'joined the club.'

Maya Angelou told the story of how in the town she lived in, there was a railroad track that divided where black folks and where white folks lived. She never ventured to the other side. One day she was talking a walk where she grew up, when she got to those same tracks, she immediately turned back around. It took some serious self-awareness to purposely talk herself out of this thinking. This is the same Maya Angelou we know today, with all her wisdom and other various accolades.

Same thing with us what does long hair (or the tracks) represent for you?
There is a premise to this question, perhaps implied…

I was offended when someone at work asked me if I was growing long hair because I wanted to be white. It took some time to really see, that it was more telling about HER than me. I'm sure she's not so unique in her thoughts...

Great food for thought.

We are so THERE!!!!!!!
I wish I had started this journey in my 20's!

I am pretty now & will aways will be. But I will the bomb with long hair.
Why the hell am I going to put myself through this regime if not to reap the benefits and stand out!!

No. That is way too loaded a thing to say and then to tack a 'we' on the end of it. If that's how you feel well then that's unfortunate, but don't ascribe that thought process to the rest of us.

I think long hair on a young black woman would make her more attractive (or attractive to more) to the opposite sex because its pretty rare for the most part. IMO
