Which do you perfer for those that have been to them both?

Those haven't tried both why do you perfer to continue to go to one over the other?

What's the major differences at both (ex. hair drying techniques, etc.)?

I've done both. I preferred the Dominicans because they placed a higher value on healthier hair over "styled" hair. No hard crunchy sizzled curls.

My AA stylists and I always got tooooooo familiar. I do not need your weed smoke in my face WHILE you're doing my hair...word. No I will not sit and wait while you and TyTy fight OUTSIDE the salon. No I will not sit and wait for you to get yourself "together" after a night in da club. No i'm not getting you a plate of oxtails from across the street...I could go on but i'll stop

:lachen::lachen: Please dont stop keep going.

I love my old stylist and I use to hang out with the stylists in the shop too... but with the Dominican's they try to help your hair grow and you can get in/out without posting up all day like a piece of furniture!

If I'm not doing it myself, I prefer the Dominican salon. In large part because of the reasons discodumpling cited, but I've been to some Dominican spots on the same bull as some AA spots so it's not my only reason. I prefer the products, technique and atmosphere. I only get my roots blown when I go, but maybe once a year I'll let them blow it out straight. They can definitely help you stretchhhhhhhhhhh, and get just as excited when they see your hair growing-in my experience.

For me it completely depends on the owner of the salon and the stylists working there.

I have been in some stank AA salons and some stank Dominican ones to. They haven't touched my hair since I became a hair wearrior though.

As far as the difference, right now in Bmore I am sticking with Dominican because they do as I please and I can't beat 26 dollars. I am on a BUDGET. They also carry the relaxer I will be using from now on.

I always only have my roots blown. If I want curls, I get my girl to pin curl it and the next day I have perfect spirals. All the stylists where I go are phenom.

My AA stylist here is great too, but she's always burned my pocket and chopped off my progress even when I said no because she's my childhood stylist and feels she can take liberties. Lately she also took to taking a marcel to my hair after drying. :nono:

Part of the downside to a Dominican salon is most likely communication. I speak pretty fluent Spanish, which helps, and at my salon they can translate for each other. Sometimes I tell someone how to say what they want or write it on paper for them if the want my style. You can make sure you get what you want if you have someone do that for you.

Girl....you have spoken nothing but the truth all up in here:lachen:

I'll add:

No, I will not wait while you eat yo chicken wings and you have to wash your hands before putting them in my hair....my hair don't do chicken grease, my hair likes oil sheen..thank you very much.:lachen:

ETA: Oh, I picked Dominican because my hair has done a whole lot better with them, even though they use lots of heat.

I had a stylist call the salon, ask for me, then proceed to tell me she needed a ride to the salon so she could do my hair :perplexed  I thought she was in the back working to whole time (sitting there about 45 minutes). This chicken head was @ the crib. That's where I left her.

You have got to be joking right?

What in the world?????????:lachen:

Now, that's ig'nant:lachen:

I prefer Dom salons....
It's up to the patron to allow them to use all that heat. It's not like they force you to blow your hair to death.
Overall, I think they are very interested in healthy hair, they dust/trim well. If you get weekly wash and sets with a doobie wrap, your hair should be fine :yep: .
Plus, I bring my own produts with no problem at all.

It really depends on the salon for me.

Right now I'm leaning towards Dominicans, because they just do my hair, it's in and out. No blowdry, hot comb on the new growth, telling my not to stretch, and then flatironing. No telling me not to DC so often. They just do their job, and it's cheaper.

I'm torn btw. the two.

My first 'real' stylist was an Antiguan (Black) lady. She relaxed my hair for the first time. She's very good and to this day my mom still goes to her for her relaxers and her coloring. HOWEVER, she takes forever and a day to do your hair plus she's more expensive than the Dominicans.

My current stylist is a Dominican (mixed) lady. She does a pretty good job, but last relaxer she overlapped a bit too much for my liking AND she slapped some super relaxer in my hair without asking. However, she is fast and on the cheap side. I went in for a relaxer at 12.15 and was out by 2.30.

I think when I get out of school and get a real job, I'll probably go to a more upscale, Black salon. I like the Dominicans, but just like a Black salon, they can have you waiting if they need to eat some pernil and rice and beans or have to smoke a ciggy. Also, the roundbrush heat styling at the Dominicans is not a good look. My scalp was slowly starting to suffer from nerve damage. During the course of the day I would just feel a sharp "ping" over different parts of my head. Once that started happening, I was like "peace" to any sort of blow out, no roots, no length, no nothing...:nono:

Both have their pros and cons.

SHE was ig'nant. From what I heard after the fact is that she did that type of mess all the time. Some of her patrons would go pick her up and she'd still charge them full price:perplexed. I'm just sayin, knock something off for gas or something. I haven't had an AA stylist since. That whole salon turned me off. People coming in to fight one of the stylists for running their mouth (that's what they do for a living), boosters and crackheads coming in to sell stuff :nono:, somebody selling dinners out the trunk of their car...

My white one wasn't much better. Loved her to death, until recently. While she took good care of my hair and wouldn't dream of having someone else trim me (going to do them myself now, we're not cool anymore), she would just say dumb mess like "I'm not white, I'm pigmentally challenged." I don't care how many mulatto babies you have (5), that doesn't change who or what you are...

Well I'm natural now, but back when I was relaxed I went to the Dominican salon and they did a really nice job. I figured out how to do it myself and get the same effects, so I didn't keep going back. I tried to to go them once when I was natural and they turned me away - I guess it was too much to handle. Now when I get my hair pressed, I go to the best stylist I've ever had in Philly and I haven't been to another in years (even though I moved out of state twice! Lol). If I can't go to her, I'll do it myself. Haven't been back to the Dominicans since.

I prefer Dominican salon. The last time I went to a black Salon to get my first and last weave install, the stylist kept whispering in my ear asking me when am I going to come and see her. I went back to her 1 1/2 later to have the weave removed, she cut off a piece of my hair :angry2: and complained that I never come to see her

Gosh girl...you have had some experiences:lachen:

Hey Everyone! this is Nini, I'm a newbie and this is my first post, so exciting! lol

My choice would have to be the Dominican salons. I live in NYC and they're everywhere. The reason I prefer them is because they tend to have the products I use (Alter Ego, Mizani, Alfaparf) and you don't have to wait very long to get in and out of the salon. I have been to AA salons where i've spent a few hours waiting even when I had an appointment. The prices are also a factor, Dominican salons tend to be cheaper and more cost friendly to my budget. You may have to search around to find a good one so that you don't sacrifice quality for price but once you do you're set.

They have Dominican salons in Bmore? I havent been there in a few years but I used to go to Morgan State and would go to an AA salon in Northwood Plaza, i think it was called Dimensions and Designs. Treshawn (a hair stylist there) was my girl, but she trying to convert me to those wet wraps :lachen:i love my roller sets so thats what i'll stick with. I would have definitely went to the Dominicans during my time out there but never found any of their salons.

I'm a bit high-maintenance, I guess, because I have two stylists: one black, one Dominican.

My Dominican stylist I go to fairly regularly. She really shows concern for the health of the hair, and is so efficient. (I don't trust almost any other stylist at the salon, though; they don't seem to be quite as proficient.) I see her for rollersets, deep conditioning treatments, and my trims when necessary.

My black stylist is the only one who I will allow to put relaxers in my hair, or to do any styles for special occasions, though. She's super professional and knows what she's doing, and I feel very comfortable with her. I won't let her come near my head with scissors, though, and for anything basic it's too pricey to see her on a regular basis.

Wow u sound just like me..i do have a black stylist to apply my relaxer. She is pricey as well but i like the way she applies it to the roots only so its the only person i trust right now. I wish i hadnt let her do my trim this time around...i ended up with a straight up cut:ohwell:
I go to my dominican stylist to maintain.

Chicken grease? A ride to the salon? LOL Damn I feel like I'm missing out LOL

I picked Dominican cuz that's where I'm from and Dominican salons is all I really know, but ever since I went natural they've been missing me oops I meant my money. I buy all Dominican products, rollerset my hair, use low heat, etc.. the same as the salons except I actually care about my hair and you'd pretty much have to hold me down in order to get me to cut my hair LOL My mom owned a salon in the 70's and I learned from watching her.

You guys have some funny stories btw. I've only been to an AA salon twice in my life and both experiences were pleasant. The woman made my hair bone straight.

When I do go to salons, which is rare. I think I prefer Dominican (though I have only been to one once). I was in and out. The entire time I was there I was getting something done and not sitting at the dryer (where the timer had BEEN went off) and I could see my stylist working and not coming back in from playing the midday lottery.

This is exactly what I did before I started transitioning

I have always done my own hair.

But if I was going to choose simply based off of reviews I would pick dominican. The most common comment made about them is how fast they get you out of their salon. I"m sure that both salon types are even in the heat used (marcels and very hot blow dryers). In addition to that many (excluding many in the DMV area :ohwell:) tend to be very cheap esp with relaxers. I don't know how you make it in NYC giving $25 relaxers inclu roller set when the avg is $80-90 for just the relaxer

Now THAT'S takin ghetto to a whole new level! Dang. :ohwell: :nono:
