i've noticed this too. i just now started taking extra good care of my hair but even before my hair was never shorter than APL and they always wanted to chop off my "bad" ends. mind you that my ends were NEVER raggidy. before i even knew about good hair care i always moisturized my ends and wraped my hair at night. but they always had them scissors waiting for me

I know right. My hair never grew past shoulder length when I was in JHS because of scissor happy stylist. You tell them trim they give you a 3 inch trim

My mother is the #1 culprit. She would laugh and make stupid jokes when i was applyong olive oil. cholesterol or buying stuff for my hair. :nono: Then this past easter and i wore my hair down, she said who did my weave. I said does this look like a weave? Its my hair you know what my hair looks like and she was digging her hands in my hair in the restaurant. She asked what i did and i said the stuff you were laughing at.

LOVE IT!!!:lachen::lachen:

One of dh's aunts used to make rude comments all of the time about my haircare. When I first started, she came over in the evening while I had my hair baggied. She was like  ''Oh Lord, what dumb stuff are you doin to your hair now? All that stuff you're doin to it, is gonna make it fall out'' *All I did was wash once a week, wear buns and baggy at night :perplexed*

Another time, dh was telling her how healthy my hair was getting and how I'm not wearing weaves and wigs anymore because my hair was growing. She was like ''Mmm-hmm, yeah whatever, she gon be goin back to the weaves soon''

Flash forward about 9 or so months, I finally wore my hair down for Thanksgiving. I knew the whole family *including the aunt* would be there, and I wanted to show off :D The last time she had seen my hair, it was barely SL when soaking wet. When I walked through the door with nearly APL hair, she was like  Everyone kept complimenting my hair and playing in it, saying how pretty and thick it was. While auntie was acting like she was preoccupied with watching tv, I could tell she was hearing every word. Every now and then I'd catch her looking at my hair and when I looked at her, she'd hurry up and look somewhere else  I know it was killing her that my hair had grown and everyone was loving it. Meanwhile, her hair's gone from APL to see through, barely scraping SL due to treating her hair like crap

I can't wait for the next holiday

You should tell her that green is not her color, so stop wearing it (green with envy that is:grin:) Chile, she wants to be you... she probably wants your hair and probably goes to sleep dreaming about your highlights!

You show her girl.. Brush off the haters.

I have haters, but... Before I grew my hair long I told my friends chris and melanie as we were walking that I was going to grow my hair long. This was when my hair was short and I was introduced to Cathy Howse's book. The reply from them was so quiet that I could hear the crickets chirping. *No i really heard them, it was night time* So when they gradually seen the length getting longer and longer they said "Girl you hair is getting soooo long what are you doing?" and I said "I told ya'll way back when, that I was gonna grow my hair long and ya'll didn't say A WORD." They told me that they didnt beleive me because they couldnt imagine me with long hair. Mind you before I met them, my hair was always been a longer than shoulder length before I cut it. Now I got melanie asking for hair pointers... But she doesnt seem to want to give up the glue in weaves... soooo... Cant help you there lady.

LOL @ the bold.

i wouldn't say i had "haters" (it's not that serious, imo) but i did have people doubt my hair could grow and look nice. they didn't clown me or anything, just gave me the :perplexed :nono: look when i told them what i was going to do to my hair. now that i'm into my 2nd year of being natural, they are always surprised when they see me after a few months because my hair has steadily been making good progress. now they want to talk hair but i'm not interested.

their reaction doesn't make me feel superior, validated, happy or whatever. it's more so a mild *smh* and  moment for me because it seems no-one takes you seriously about hair unless you've got some length. i don't think it should really be that way. i can remember as a relaxed head when i used to admire women whose hair was shorter than mine because it looked so healthy. on the other hand, my own hair was dry, brittle and breaking.

I have alot of stories ..even when my hair was longer people thought that I had a weave in..like black girls can't have long or even healthy hair! now when I first cut it some people at school thought it was a wig!! and there was another time this white man on the street told me "Nice wig" I said "this is my hair not a wig!!!".. Wow I guess that was a compliment but why is that unbelievable that a black girl can have hair like that, lol lol its alright im not sweating I love the haters.

Oh yea and my mom is a big one too I love her sooo much but after I cut my hair ..I didnt hear the end of it. Even up to this day she will be like " Hmm right now your hair should be long and flowing ..now you don't got none!!" :lachen::lachen:LOL LOL Thats just motivation I brushed that off and kept it moving:yep:

Your mom sounds like my mom. That's why I'm not even going to tell her that I'm thinking about going natural. I know she would say that my hair would never grow back.

Great Story, Tiffers!
 Im glad you shook her hate off and you were able to show her that you know what you doing. I hope she sucks it up and asks you for advice before she's darn near bald, but she probably has too much pride. I wouldn't be surprised if she's wearing a bun with a baggy over it the next time you see her, or she might ask your DH for your hair regimen/products and be at the BSS lookin like :sekret:...

but what is it with most mothers when they say stuff to their daughter like that. Then they don't realize what their saying is wrong. :nono:

My aunts are constantly telling me my hair is going to fall out from so much washing...that was back in June 07 at our family reunion. Can't wait til they see me, they are going to be so jealous:lachen::grin::yep:

I'm not even APL yet, and the haters are coming out of the wood work. Well its really one woman in my office who is obsessed with me and my hair, She is so negative and loves to gossip with others about my hair. Someone overheard her. I went and confronted her, she acted a if she had no clue about what I was saying. Mind you I'm not asking for her opinion, or even talking to her about hair..so where she gets the nerve from is beyond me. She is Italian has long black hair about BRA STRAP. She is just so negative I truly have had to take it all to the Lord in prayer, just not to lose my cool or self control. She has made statements at different times for example. Someone made mention they liked the reddish highlights I put in my hair" out of nowhere , she chimes in " I hate the color of your hair".....I was left with my jaw to the ground...when did I ask her for her opinion. Another time she jumped in to say Oh now that Summer is over your hair wont be growing" Oh look how long you've been trying to grow your hair(April 2006 I had 3 inches of natural hair at the longest points) I'm 2-3 inches from Arm pit...is that a long time?. "If your looking for me to say I like your hair I don't " I have had to pray for this woman, so seldom you you run across someone who is so negative.
I have boiled it down to this "Who did this to her". either a husband, or parent must have treated her so negatively , this is all she knows. We are both Government worker's , women in their 40's , I have never tried to compete with her in any fashion. I know no one knows the length of my hair as I have only worn it to work straight 2 in 2007. Is she negative or hating?
Well as for me , it motives me even more....
I say this to the Lord ...Now Lord God you must prepare a table in the presence of my enemies ..and I know He will!:grin:

 Wow! I really want to know what chick's problem is too! She is a bonafide hater! I wonder what she'll say when your hair passes hers

*off to read the other stories*

Oh heck yes!! I had a ex-boyfriend of mine break up w/ me because I decided to cut my hair to chin length(yes...for real!):wallbash:. He said that I shouldn't have done it and that it wouldn't grow back that long, I was only at shoulder length at this point. He's best friends w/ my brother-in law so he came to visit last month. Best believe I made sure to use a cheat (HYH challenge) that day:grin:!! Ladies, I rollerset and then flat ironed my past-BSL hair silky straight and flaunted it...and my beloved SO in his face:lachen:! Yeah, I know that was a little petty, but it FELT SO GOOD ya'll!

:nono:

I wish you would have slapped him with that BSL hair :yep::yep::yep::grin:

This is a strong belief. Especially when they hear that I like to rinse my hair daily, I promise if someone tells me that Im black (as if I wasn't aware) one more time...I wonder when and how did this start. I mean I know that shampoos can be dry or strip the hair, but I remember reading on a hair care website for a different race (asian I think) that shampoos can be drying, that's why they have to condition too just like us. I definitely remember reading that black people aren't the only ones with dry hair. So if they can wash or rinse their hair frequently, it doesn't have to be everyday (they can skip a couple of days too from what I read), then why can't we?
I told a relative that if she doesn't want to mess up her relaxed hair, fine, but it is an option that black women also have just like other races of women. She looked shocked when I told her my real hair is growing using daily co-rinsing as part of my regimen. She looked at my head (covered by wig. lol), that's okay...Im going to show her one day. Im going to show them all. :evillaugh:

Well when I was down south with my family over the past Christmas and New Year's Holidays, my Aunt was very shocked with my hair growth. Now she is a true "tell it like it is" southern woman. When I was down last October for my grandfathers funeral, this was the first time she's seen it in many years, and made a half negative comment about how long it had gotten. While I was down in December, I'd catch her looking at it every so often, and then to justify it's length (in her mind) told me that I get it from my daddy's people, because my momma' ain't never had any hair  By the way, my mother rocks a very nice fro' which I love and couldn't see any other way.

My aunt just can't help her mouth and I know speaks this way because she had always been the sister with the thick and wavy "good hair." Her hair is not what it used to be, but she's still got that spiteful and competitive streak in her old age, so I just let her alone.

My sister is always laughing at me and my daughter (also forum addict) saying that if we keep doing all this "stuff" to our hair we are gonna wake up one morning with all our hair on our pillow.

Today - our hair is thriving and she is out looking for a new wig. She won't even take my suggestions to care for whats under the wig :nono:. I'm done. This summer when we are rocking our full braid-outs, she will be complaining about her scalp sweating under the wig.

You should tell her that green is not her color, so stop wearing it (green with envy that is:grin:) Chile, she wants to be you... she probably wants your hair and probably goes to sleep dreaming about your highlights!

Its sort of creepy when you think about it but funny too:grin:
