I really hate the phrase "hair porn"

I wouldn't go so far as "hate" but the phrase bothers me too, OP. And I say that as someone who's used it before, along with other related metaphors and phrases ("hairgasm", "had to light up a cigarette after that one", etc) and who can appreciate and laugh with many of the comments in this thread that counter your belief.

I must admit that I've never thought about it from a Christian POV. My concern lies in the usage of the term "porn" in non-sex contexts - hairporn, shoeporn, foodporn (anyone see the South Park episode "creme fraiche"?). It speaks to the way in which porn is pervasive throughout other areas of daily life/culture. Porn is becoming increasingly normalized and de-stigmatized not only through people participating in the consumption of actual porn but also through people's "mere" usage of the word in describing things that have nothing (or little) to do with sex. It also illustrates, in very specific terms, the way that we relate to those non-sexual things that we foist the term "porn" upon - lustful, voyeuristic, arousing, impulsive, for the purpose of others' pleasure and satisfaction, etc. I also think it's part of a larger trend of sexualizing non-sex things to assign a positive value judgment to them - "being smart is sexy", "powerful women are sexy" - as if those things don't have inherent value in and of themselves.

To take it a step further, it can be argued that where hair is concerned, frequent "hairporn" viewing produces a relationship dynamic between the porn-watcher and porn-watcher's hair that parallels the that of real porn. The hairporn watcher develops unhealthy expectations about hair and becomes resentful that their hair doesn't measure up. I wouldn't necessarily agree with that argument nor do I think that porn itself is necessarily a bad thing but I do think that the usage and popularity of the term "hairporn" is indicative of something more than just "great hair".

To say it's "just a phrase", is to say that English is "just a bunch of words". It's more than that - it's a way of expressing culture, concepts, and a particular way of seeing the world and the things within it - including hair.

Interestingly enough, lhdc doesn't like the term "hairporn" either. I think she might have stated it in the very video from which this gif was created.

OP, what can I say there are a lot of exhibitionists on this website.

I'm practising hair celibacy right now hence why I've stopped posting my hair pics. I believe there are a lot of women here who after losing their hair virginity, have lost all shame.

Honestly I've lost count of the number of back fat I've seen on this forum. Each one, telling their own story. I remember the days Hair porn was soft. But now it has got too X-rated for my own liking. I mean why does the camera have to zoom in that far? I don't want to see your damn hair follicles.

I miss vintage hair porn. That had some style/class about it. Lately.. everything is a little hardcore. :look:

POST OF THE YEAR. GIVE HER A HAND :drunk::drunk::drunk::yep::yep::yep:

Oh and I don't really care for the use of the word "whore" either as in "attention whore," "shoe whore," and so on. But to each her own, of course.

So what really bothers people with the word porn? the obscureness? is it taboo?

I guess I'm not offended by it because I'm not offended by porn itself. Like someone mentioned early, if it was called Hair Idol or Hair Devotion, I doubt I would see a post with a scripture listed in it. Though a few scriptures run through my head when I type about idolization. I respect the OP's view and understand what she was stating. I just wondered why some words are point the corner and others words that clearly have stronger ties in the religion are not hated or disgraced.

I know, I know. It's all preference.

I think the phrase is a little odd too, especially since we are a Christian board - no same sex relationships talk, etc. But oh well ...

:drunk::drunk: i don't even understand the bolded. normally i'd say that's blasphemy but w/ all the christians coming out in this thread i'll just say it's CRAZY TALK! what? i have a lot of respect for you @reeko43, but i just don't think your hair obsession is deep enough. Get ye to the XxX thread stat! you need re-indoctrination (y'all have no idea how many church related and thus completely inappropriate terms i am consciously avoiding using here.)

i'm still woozy from the revelation. although now i'm wondering if i immerse myself in hair p0rn more because i am only SL :look: ? i don't think so tho. after all, i still love looking at gorgeous and fashionable black women... and i'm a gorgeous and fashionable black woman... so i'm now just genuinely :perplexed:

:lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen:

This post is too much, lol! But seriously, initially I looked at pictures of long hair because I was amazed at the amount of Black women, who weren't mixed, that had midback to waist length hair:spinning: Once I joined the LHCF and saw posts with pictures of long haired women on the regular, the novelty wore off. I guess I am more into the hair techniques. But I ain't knocking that thrill for others. Now show me a picture of my husband, well you know :yep::lick::yep: :lachen::lachen:

andromeda: i disagree w/ the bolded but i love everything else about this post.

re: LHDC, i don't think she said she hated the term, i think she said she didn't understand the usage of it on the boards. but she doesn't frequent hair boards (particularly not bhm i'm guessing where porn is completely embraced) so it just be a matter of lack of familiarity.

great post tho. really good articulation of your POV and also gives me su'm to think about. i generally think words are more than just random combinations of letters and that they do hold weight. although i also choose not to get up in arms about things when i know the intent is harmless or when it becomes so pervasive it becomes virtually harmless. never the less, your post is definitely one of those things that make you go hmmmm.... thx

I really don't think it's a big deal. It's just how people use the words "product junkie" or "product pusher", they're just figures of speech within our little hair community. It doesn't mean that we're out in dark alleys selling dime bags of sulfur or selling our family's tv for a gallon of deep conditioner...at least i hope not lol

Yeah i can see how these phrases could offend ppl, but at the end of the day it's all in good fun between hair sisters

I can't speak for OP but "hair porn" seems to be used most frequently and is currently a popular thread. There may be a few but not a lot of threads started with the the word idol, devotion, whatever.

I personally do take issue with the word "porn" and it is not just spiritual. I also take issue w/ the B word, N word, any derogatory term used to belittle women and/or race. I think I focus on the true meaning of porn and can't associate the word in any way positive. Not to be a downer but porn exploits women, majority of the women who appear in porn have been sexually abused, exploited and even forced into sex trafficking. But, that is just me and I realize not everyone is inclined to look at things that deep.

Someone recently pulled me up here about the term "hair nazi". After being schooled on the implications of the term "nazi", I could understand the offense and I have removed it from my vocab. But, I am all for people being free to express on the forum. I think seeing alternative pov's are far more interesting and educating than groupthink.

That was one of the funniest Southpark's ever! My sides were hurting. The very next week after watching it, my aunt was like, "I think I'm going to get a shake weight." I just busted out laughing. I tried not to for fear of my mother's scary eye, but... it just came out. Southpark ruined a few marketing campaigns with that one.

I think the op has a right to express her views. This forum gives us a chance to look at unique personal truths, and views of women all over the world. It would be very boring here if we all had the same points of view.

True, thanks!

I spit on my computer screen a FEW times reading this thread. More LOL's please :yep:

ETA: OP while I take NO offense to the use of the term, you are entitled to your $6.50 but the response to this thread was more than I could have hoped for :lachen::lachen:

People are sooooooo sensitive you know what hair porn means on a HAIR thread good grief

bible scriptures i mean really!:look: not everyone on here is a Christian so adding that to me is pointless

:yep:

Here is my beef: I never get how people get upset when someone wants to question a point of view from an OP. If someone can start a thread stating why she dislikes the term hair porn, and use biblical scriptures to "prove" why that term is bad, then I have the right to tell her why I do not agree with her interpretation of the Bible. I'm not trying to be nasty, but if you don't want your thoughts or beliefs to be questioned then you probably should not post them on a public forum.
:yep:

Oh boy. The OP has gone and done it. Now I'm getting Liberty University ads across the top of LHCF. >Jerry Falwell's university... shudder<

So that's his University. There was a guy I was talking to a while back who went to that one.

Ladies, I just have to say this is a really good thread. I hope everyone read the book of Alberto verse V05. Next week we will read the book of Infusium, verse 23. :yep:

Oh man, you didn't get read that? Well in my bible study days they had them in the back. Here's a little snippett:

In the Book of Alberto verse V05 it says:

Let she who is with protective styling undoeth thy bun.
And I shall drooleth overeth it! :lick::lick::lick::lick:

ROTFL!!!!! BAAAAAHAAHAAAHAAAAAAAA

omg...This thread is toooo funnyyyy.. I don´t even post like that, but I hope it keeps going just so I can see some more gifs.

I'm older and conservative, and the term doesn't bother me at all. *scratches my back fat in confusion*

Great, now there's Mr. Pibb all over the place.:lachen::lachen::lachen:

I'm one of those people who says porn all the time in different ways like.."porn star curls" or "porn stache"...so ummm yeah:look:

Maybe you can come up with a G-rated phrase, OP
