WIG CHALLENGE for 2007

Hi ladies

I'd like to join but i've never worn a wig before........i'm sick of watching my natural hair grow!

I have some questions........

1) How do you wear a half wig with natural hair? The thought of wearing a hair band or scarf on top of a wig just makes me feel hot. Wouldn't the textures look different?

2) If you wear a full wig with a plastic (baggie) cap on underneath - do you hear the crunchy noise? And how do you secure the wig onto the plastic?

3) Whilst wearing a wig is everyone braiding up the hair or just stuffing it under a wig cap? I would have thought stuffing it under would produce a matted mess by the end of the day.

4) Doesn't anyone feel embarrased trying on wigs in a shop in front of everyone?
Do you go to the shop with your cornrowed hair and put them on or do you just hold it up in front to get an idea and hope for the best when you get home?

Bublin, you sound like me...tired of watching my natural hair grow-out.

I've been on this challenge since seeing laketta grow from ear length to BSL as a natural while wearing a wig for 2-3 years. (sorry to blow you up girl) But she is truly my inspiration. I Started at SL and I am nearing BSL in the back. I've been on my own wig challenge since end Nov. i've retained length and my fine hair(with the help of vitamins) has gotten a lot thicker, too.

My Reg....
protein every two weeks(elasta qp breakage control serum)
Followed by Fortifying Conditioner or Nexxus humectress/JF daily nourish
CW weekly(MNT)
mango butter on edges and ends of my hair every day
oil scalp every other night with MTG and WGO
*Deep Conditioner- combine fav. 2 conditiners with coconut oil.
- apply a clear rinse helps to seal ends

Good Luck Ladies. This wig thing was a true blessing. Midback here I come!

OT but CurlyJ--your hair in you Avatar is BEAUTIFUL.

How's eveyone doing on the challange? I'm doing pretty well. I have a couple of the wigs I wear in my Fotki.

Hi there, check out my fotki I have my latest style in there with a full wig but I wear in on the back half of my head.

I wear baggie on the back of my head sometimes and yes if I am scracthing or touch my wig I will hear the sound, no one arround has said they have heard it yet.:lachen: Because I don't have the baggie on my whole head I can pin it up in the back and in the top and sides. The one thing I do with all my wigs is take out the combs and hooks. I use hair pins at ALL times. Those combs and hooks will pull and tangle hair and that is being counterproductive to me. I use the very long hair pins. Everything else has those platic or hard tips and they scracth my scalp or pull my hair.

Also get some wig shampoo and spray conditioner for your wig.

I go to some shops were there isn't major traffic so I don't worry about who is around. Be sure to bring a wig cap or buy one because they usually will not let you put one of their wigs on without the cap or in some places it is a wig stocking cap looking product.

Have fun with it. That is my best advice. If you really like a wig and it is reasonable by 2 of the same. One for everyday and then one for special occaisions or like going to church or something. I have a few different styles but one wig I have 3 of because I like the style and will be using it for most of the summer and probably into the fall months.

My hair color without Indigo is 1B so I match up my hair pieces and wigs to go with my hair color. I now go with 1 because the Indigo makes my hair totally black.

I would say look at some of the wig sites on line and pick out a few you would like as far as style. Print a copy of the wig style and take it with you when you go shopping. There is one site that will let you try on the wig and return it if you don't like it. I can't remember the name though.

PM me if you have more questions.

Welcome Bublin! :)

Below is a photo of my favorite wig - it is human hair, color 1, with lots of body, layers, and bangs.

I have on a half wig in my avatar and my hairs natural. I flat twist the front and the wig is curly so it blends in. My hair is very soft and with flat twisting it looks almost straight. I like the half wigs better cause in my opinion they don't look as fake.

I have the rest of my hair in twists underneath and apply BT every night.

Hi ladies, I am still on the challenge.

Right now these are the two wigs I am wearing--I love them. http://www.hairsisters.com/ver2/ViewDetail.php?product_id=2718&searchOption=5&viewOption=1&position=0&limit=20&value1=3602&value2=0&value3=0&search=0#I

I wear them pulled back in a messy pony (otherwise it's too much hair and overwhelms my face and doesn't look natural to me), I think I look cute and pretty natural, I get lots of compliments. So far my hair seems to be enjoying the rest.

Mscocoface - i looked in your fotki and searched forever trying to find a pic of you wearing a full wig as a half wig. I then went back to a pic that i had looked at twice and realised that was the picture. Wow - i think it looks really natural and won't have known if i hadn't been looking out for it.
Thanks for the advice - much appreciated.

Curlidiva - your wig looks fantastic.

Hopeful - i love those wigs you say your wearing - i'm gonna go try one on.

Keedah - you look great in your avatar and siggy - can't believe its the same person! Thanks for the advice.
I think we have similar hair. I big cut in Feb 2006 and my hair is also very soft and holds a good curl. I'm going to find me a half wig and hopefully post pics soon.

Hey ladies,

I need some advice.

I went out and bought this instant weave...........
http://www.lfhair.com/xcart/customer/product.php?productid=16918

I'm excited as i'm new to wigs and have to say i think it really suits me. I flat twisted the front of my hair and put it on.

I have one problem - the edge of the weave is way too obvious. My own natural hair texture isn't too different when twisted but that cap sitting on my head looks awful.

I followed all of your instructions to twist the front but for me to walk out the house i will have to diguise that line with a thin hair band.

Any suggestions as to what i'm doing wrong?

Could you gel your natural hairline down over the wig? Maybe you could set it at night or in the morning as you get dressed and then take off the scraf before you reach work?

I'm natural too, so I just buy wig styles that hang on the sides or with bangs so I don't have to worry about my hairline.

I'm definitely down for this!;) I've been wearing full-cap wigs for almost a year now, and my hair seems to like 'em. But I actually have my natural hair braided down to my scalp (wrap style) and just take it down every month and a half or so to get it deep conditioned, cut if necessary, and re-braided. I also have my stylist set the braid along my hairline back about an inch, so if I'm wearing a style without bangs, no one can see the braid. I've recently started the baggy method at night on my cornrows too....so far so good.

Even though I've been wearing wigs for a little while now, it'll still be a challenge for me because I'm actually getting sick of wearing 'em. Plus, in the summertime them suckas get hot! In June I'm giving my hair a break from the braiding. But other than that, I'm IN!

My wig styles are in my Fotki -

Thanks CurliDiva!:p It's not so bad in the summertime as long as you don't spend too much time in the sun and/or over exert yourself with any physical activities. But it can definitely get mighty toasty under there!

I guess I was already on this challenge without knowing it...I wear a wig everyday. So I am in by default.

I'm not joining in this challenge b/c I've been wearing 1/2 wigs for the last 6 mos. and I'm sick of them for now!!

But I gained mad thickness and length while doing them, so good luck to all the ladies in this challenge.

One piece of advice for fall wearers: When I first started wearing them I noticed breakage where the combs were inserted so I started rubbing castor oil GENEROUSLY over the combs. NO breakage whatsoever, and those hairs are soft and thick.

thank u for those words of wisdom!! i've been wearing falls for over a yr and my hair has drastically improved but i do have a bit of breakage in those areas.

If it's not too late to join, I'm in! I have been doing this for the past 3 months and OMG:eek: my hair has never been better! I use half wigs and 3/4 wigs. I have also tried using a full cap wig WITHOUT bangs (as seen below). I usually just slick back my edges and baggie the rest of my hair. After placing the baggie over most of my hair (up until about the beginning of my ears), I then place the wig cap over it. To hide the seam of the wig I cover it with a cute headband or a nice skinny scarf. To avoid over-moisturizing I dont baggie during the day all of the time.

Okay, has anyone noticed thining where the combs are? I know that you are supposed to oil those areas, and I have but I still notice that at the nape of my neck my hair seems to be thining, not balding but thining. Maybe it has always been like this and I just did not notice it because I went from micro braids to relaxer to wigs fairly quickly.

I have noticed a tremendous amount of hair growth and I'm satisfied thus far. Everyone seems to love my fall, they say it looks natural. Will post pics soon.

Are there any tips to keep your natural hair from drying, I have not experienced, but I noticed that on other threads some say they have. This has been my regimen since I started this challenge.

  • CW once per week and then have natural hair cornrowed
  • Use Bt, every night before bed, sleeping in my silk scarf
  • Every two weeks do a Apoghee Protein treatment and then Baggy with Vatika Oil. These weeks I co-wash first then do a regular wash, use the protein treatment, DC with moisture rich conditioner and then baggy, air dry and braid
  • Wear my fall faithfully everday
  • Only use heat on the day that it has been washed, so once per week and then just comb to blend with the fall
  • 9-10 week relaxer stretch. 03/10/07 to 05/03/07.
What do you all think? What are your regimens? How do you keep the fall on in the back without the comb? I used bobby pins with my last fall but it kept slipping, suggestions please.

I think I may be leaving this challenge, at least most of the time. I recently twisted my hair all over and it looks so pretty and healthy. On special occasions, until it gets to the length I want, I will likely still wear my beloved wigs though. Close to two months of wearing wigs got me over the hump, my twists were in that in between stage and I wasn't feeling them. They are still not long but long enough finally that I feel cute without needing a scarf, clips or anything.

I baggy almost every night with s-curl and oil my edges good. Do you need to use Aphogee every two weeks? That sound like a lot of protein to me. That may be drying out your edges. Also you say you use heat weekly, I was wondering how, that may also be the culprit.

My hair is not dry though, it is actually quite balanced, compared to before. I asked about dryness because I noticed that other fall wearers on other threads had experienced it and if it ever happened to me, I want to be prepared. I only use the heat on the front part that is out, covering the top and sides of the wig, you know to blend it, this is not the area that is breaking, this again is quite healthy. The only part that is thining is the nape area the closest part to my neck, not much but enough to make me change what I have been doing in that area. My hair is normally thin and the Aphgee has seemed to thicken it up and in my opinion make it stronger. When I was going to the salon she did the protein treatments on me every two weeks for that reason and told me that I could continue them and I would know when to stop because my hair would be dull, when going to the salon I did not experience this type of thining. I am pretty sure it is from the combs so I ask for suggesstions on what has worked for others in that area. Did you remove the combs, if so how did you hold the fall into place?

@ Poetrygirl, sorry I wasn't more helpful. I don't wear a fall, I wear a full wig. I don't think my wigs even have combs in them. I was just trying to be helpful...maybe someone else would be more helpful though. I'm glad the protein treatments are working for your hair though. Good luck.

Congrats! I wish my hair would hurry up and grow so I could do some pretty twists too.

Thanks chocostudent. I see you recently bc'd, hang in there, your hair will be at a nice length before you know it.
