Actually, WW are spending fortunes to look like black chicks. Have you seen the prices for tanning salon packages?? Some of them wanna be black so bad it hurts.

why are we comparing ourselves to white people again on a forum for colored women and their hair?

I've seen this question asked about elevendy billion times and aint nobody answered it yet...damn the white folks alleged Black Magic growth rate, give me some product reviews so I can add to my already too large product stash.

i believe every other ethnicity hair grows faster than ours. i don't get the denial about it. its not like that means black hair doesn't grow at all. ♥

the average growth rate of hair REGARDLESS of texture/race is 6 inches per year and people of ANY race can grow slower or faster than that so how did you come to that conclusion?

They're not trying to look black, just tanned :look:. It's a symbol of wealth and leisure. Some do it to look healthier...

Well historically, tanning isn't about looking "black". That's a misconception. It's about status and wealth. Back in the day, white women were doing all sorts of things to look as pale as possible, to show to the world that they were rich enough to stay indoors and avoid the sun. No outdoor labor, no tan.

More recently, wealthy people were going for vacation in hotter sunnier locations, extended time on yachts, beach resorts, etc. A tan represented wealth and leisure, and then that became a sign of beauty.

It's a nice fairy tale to tell little black kids that white people are tanning to look black, but that's not the case at all. :ohwell:

eta: claudia beat me to it

That's why I said SOME of them wanna be black so bad it hurts. Some of the white girls in my hometown tan a lot and try to "act black". Those are the ones my post was referring to.

I went to High School in a well to do white suburb they are NOT trying to look black, they are trying to have a tan that is symbolic of having the wealth to go on numerous exotic vacations. They're not trying to resemble any other race then white girl with a tan. If you ever take a comprehensive womens studies course they'll break down the "appeal of the exotic" and how historically looking exotic (ie white with a tan/ mixed) has always been deemed far more beautiful then looking purely black.

When white people go to get cosmetic procedures for the vast majority its not because they're trying to resemble blacks more.....trust.

Dont believe me? Go up to a white girl and say to her "wow your butt looks really big" and see how she reacts:lachen:

I'm mad I got sucked into this........who cares if they think about us talk about us and dream about us!! Just DO YOU and you'll be good.

i agree. I hate when people say that white people are doing this and that to look black. I think white people get tans, lip inplant. butt inplants and all that stuff for to enhance their own beauty.

Thats why I hate when people try to say that black women are straighten their hair, wear weaves, or hell maybe even bleach their skin to be white.. People usually do things for beauty not to be like another race. most of the time.

tanning wasnt about being black. purportedly tanning became popular by coco chanel. she fell asleep in the shade and got tan and rocked it.

All I know is that I'm quite tired of the threads focusing on "mixed" hair. It's a really strange obsession with some people.

Plus, I'm just going to put it out there for discussion; but, 9 times out of 10 is created by someone darker-complected. The obsession is crazy. Just live your life already.

Hey now! You leave us darkies alone! Lmao. Nah but for real I would say it's usually folks that are probably a little frustrated in their journey or not seeing as much results. Then come across a thread and you know the rest goes.

But yea what does complexion have to do with anything? If anything I wouldve thought short hair.

Yeah, I highly doubt white folks put this much thought into what black people are doing. Just throwing it out there.

What is 'acting black'? The opposite of 'acting white'?
I really wish people would stop using that. It always seems to have a negtive meaning to me. Like I am told that I "act white" because I talk proper and like all kinds of music and not just rap etc etc. It is really insulting because I know what they mean is "wow, I'm surprised you're not 'ghetto'!" or something else stupid. Oy.

Smh, ya'll know that white people aren't checking for us like this so I don't know why folks are bothering themselves about it.
Maybe white people's hair does grow faster than ours.
Maybe it really and truly does.

And if it scientifically and without a doubt proven that it does, what are ya'll planning on doing with this information?
How will knowing that benefit your life?
Will it make your hair grow faster too?

No?

Oh.

its not a sin to to be curious about another race hair. not every thing we become curious about has to be beneficial...

I'm confused to why you added this.

here is somthing to think about...

We hear alot how white people complains about if they dont wash their hair it gets really oily and only if a few days!!!

Maybe its just the natural oils that their hair produces so well that causes them to have great growth!!

I dont think our hair produce oil like that..If it did we would be washing our hair every day too!! since our hair doesnt maybe thats the reason why we have dryer hair.

Some of us have oily scalps too. Its the reason I have to wash my hair every 3 days (5 days max) or my hair is all greasy and my scalp is itching like crazy.

No, it's not a sin. I think it's a good thing to show interest in things that are different. How else will people learn if they aren't curious?

But I tend to stay away from threads where there's a race comparison thing going on, because eventually someone will badmouth another group of people and then say "Well, they talk about us, blah blah blah" :nono:

Whoa I STRONGLY disagree.

When white girls get extensions, its NOT the same thing as what black women, and its not NEARLY as prevalent in their communities. White girls get extensions that match their natural hair texture, we don't, the best selling hair is the hair that is the opposite of our natural texture. White women usually do it out of impatience however, they have an underlying knowlege that if they really wanted to, they could grow their hair to that same length of the extension hair, most black women are completely unaware of this fact. Our history and complexes with hair run FAR deeper. The "white girls do it too so its the same" argument is a joke.....its not the same and it will never be the same.

As for the skin bleaching portion  of COURSE it comes from a desire to be white or a desire to be "other then black". Skin bleaching is just pure self-hate.

Oh.

The next secret to fast, growing hair is ....sperm from white men. I can see Pantene creating their new sperm line including sperm pomade for the scalp. lol

Hence:

Diff. b/w Afro-Caribbean & White = 3.6cm/year, or 1.41 inches/year.
Diff. b/w Afro-Caribbean & Asian = 1.89 inches/year.

I get trying to be honest and real, but sometimes it seems like we're just trying to be defeatist. Like we want there to be this huge chasm b/w "us" and "them" that explains why we can't do better.

Ok! The 1.41/1.89 inches does not explain the length difference we see IRL. So back to retention being the #1 culprit.

My hubby put me on this video. I always look into how healthy a fade is before even considering to try it on myself. It is pure hate not even from a racial aspect, but because you are destroying your once healthy skin and probably will suffer from issues later on in life.

lol. okay i went to far with the skin thing...but ya neva know. maybe they just want to be light-skinned.

Okay so I looked at some pics of Casey Anthony and her hair did not grow that long in 3 or 4 months. Her hair was neck length last year in October 08 and it is armpit this year. So it did not grow as fast as you think.

There is nothing wrong with that. But this whole thread is very off putting. I wish people were more curious about others and more wordly. There is nothing wrong with being curious about others the problems only arise when one compares and then says that one is better.

Exactly. I just had a trim today and the stylist who did my hair (who is white) wished me good luck on my hair growth journey and told me that it was hard for her to grow her hair. SHOCKING!!! Not all white women know the secret to healthy hair growth either, who would have thought.
She was a very nice lady too, will be going back to her when in need of another trim.

Why would one want to be "light skinned"?

What socio-cultural inluences would cause them to associate that with beauty?...........Self-hate resulting from a combination of the parents dropping the ball and coming up in a euro-centric society.

Skin Bleaching is never ever okay.

There are some many variables in between that can be the reason for slow growth rate or fast growth rate that there is no point in going into this. I mean you aren't in everyone's home in every single hr of the day watching their hair growing.

There are so many differences in hair care practices and you might see someone with long hair but you don't know how long it took for them to get to it. You might see someone with short hair and you don't know if they cut it yesterday or it was like that forever. Plus, there isn't much education in the black community on proper hair care practices so this accounts for a big percentage of the hair inaccuracies.

Like I said there are a lot of variables. Curly/kinky hair does need a slightly different hair approach, but we aren't aliens. Now it might take different approaches to get to healthy hair, but that doesn't have to do with growth rate. It has a lot to do with retention. No one is in denial.

Most of things I see ladies do here have to do with retention more than anything else. Moisturizing, BCing, protective styling etc... If you see more black little girls with short hair that might account for lack of knowledge on proper hair care practices that fit their texture. Curly hair coils up and breaks easier. So it has a bigger problem with retention. Thats all. Anyways let me go back to worrying about my hair.

How about we admit this....
Could it be that ON AVERAGE, black women in north America tend to be less healthy than their white counterparts?

To me it's ridiculous to compare the avg white woman to the avg black woman - because the average black woman is more concerned with preserving her hairstyle than getting in a good workout 3-5 times a week. And IMO, working out is what promotes healthy eating. And overall health does make a huge difference in hair, skin, nails.

My Ghanaian friend went natural for 2 years and her hair growth was comparable to that of the average woman of any other race - mind you, she takes care of her hair AND she takes care of herself (she's really fit)

And I know after a while had passed from when my white girlfriend and I went to the salon to get our hair coloured, we had about the same new growth (she just started complaining sooner because her hair is straight and it's more noticeable)

Then there's my aunt, on the other hand, who alternates every 3 wks between colour and a relaxer touch up, and uses heat every day. If I had her hair I would just shave it off, but anyway even just looking at her new growth six weeks post relaxer, there really isn't much there- I don't even know why she bothers for a touch up. Anyway, we're from the same family so I don't think her slow growth has to do with genetics, but the fact that she's incredibly unhealthy.

ANYWAYS, my point is that if people want to make the comparison, they should at least compare using the TOP physical specimens from each respective category.

Actually the baldness gene gets passed on by the mother. Would you believe it?

Tell that to my brother, My mom is PR and has a head full of hair, my dad's side has a W in the front of the hair line and bald middle, his line is now receding and balding, just like my uncles on my dad's side, :)

>>> glues weave onto brothers middle bald spot :lachen:
