You are riding with your man (he is the driver), and suddenly his mom calls and needs to be picked up. You get to his mom's house and she comes outside of the house and walks towards the car.

Who gets to ride shotgun?

Im southern we are raised to put elders in high regard, not even a question lol...and not even a big deal to analyze for me

Good manners and old fashioned chivary prevail at all times in regards to my MIL. She's a real gem, so I defer to her even if she protests.

She can ride up front.
It shows both SO and the mom that you have respect for her and are considerate, and that goes a long way.

Doesn't matter. Children always ride in the back if there is another adult though. Most mothers I know will not ride in the front.

If it is his father/uncle or older male he rides in the front regardless. A younger male gets the back.

As every other post suggests there is no debate mom gets the front seat.
Actually I prefer to ride in the back so I'd let anyone sit up front lol ugh unless the back seat is crowded then nah only the elderly.

It doesn't matter, to me but if you want to differentiate between husband/boyfriend that is cool. It is just a general discussion question....

I didn't realize this was such a big deal that rules of etiquette revolved around who sits in the front seat.

I'd defer to her preference. of course getting out and helping her get situated is a given. My mom, who I refer to as Miss Daisy, finds the back seat more comfortable. She can relax and enjoy the ride, especially with the extra room. I usually let males ride shot gun, so I can be Miss Daisy for awhile.

Yea it seems like the older ladies I know prefer the back seat BC its more comfortable.

Depends on what she likes. My mom says she loves to sit back left like a VIP being driven around town.
