You know eeeeveryone watches Oprah and her show is very influential. When are some sisters who are knowledgable in hair care going to get up on her show and preach the good news? I'm surprised Cathy Howse hasn't been on the show. Anyway, I think this would be a good opportunity to get the word out and end most of the hair ignorance once and for all. Most of the hairdresser's shops would probably be torched after the show but after reading the thread "Hair Hate All Up in the Salon!" I don't think anyone would care:lol:

I guess it's because Oprah's show appeals mainly to older white women and we all know they don't want us to have long hair. Next thing you know they'll be complaining about us stealing their men.

You have a point. She'd probably have to have a more mainstream topic of hair myths, nightmare salon experiences and then throw us in there for a lil flavor.

That's a good idea.

I do wonder about her hairdresser though. Isn't he Andre? The one who made up the whole infamous hair-typing system? I have a feeling he wouldn't be down with the knowledge since he is a stylist. I think he said all "Type 4" hair is fragile and not able to grow long.

Tell me about it. What I was trying to get at is that after her comment regarding black women's hair, white women already have some skewed view on our hair as it is. I'm not sure if they'd like to sit for an hour and listen to us talk about OUR hair. Maybe it would be a special show with a mostly black audience. Overall it IS something that needs to be done. I don't think Oprah is the best outlet for it though. Remember, it took her a lifetime to grow a ponytail that takes many of the women here less than a year, and she still don't know how to act. I was thinking Tyra but then I remembered that she LOVES her some lacefronts. Hmmm...this brings up a new issue, a lack of black women with talk shows. I do miss the Queen Latifah show. I really liked it :(

I thought about her too, but I'm not too sure about that. She might try to be ghetto in her delivery. You know, "keep it real."
On ANTM this past season she and Miss J did look sideways at that girl who used the term "good hair" when they were picking finalists.

Yeaaah! This is the comment I was trying to remember that she said on her show. I think it would really enlighten her. I'm sure she would be amazed as to how ignorant she was regarding black women's hair and that it CAN grow long in as little as a year! I could seriously care less about what the white women in her audience would be interested in or not but the show would be geared towards OUR hair so it would be just fine if it were a mostly black audience. I could see the commercial for the show now, "What every black woman needs to know about her hair to make it grow...next Wednesday on Oprah" I think she would be the best outlet because she is the most influential. Tyra's show is cool but I mean c'mon it's Oprah:lol: I remember reading that back in the day when she did a show about Mad Cow's Disease, beef sales went way down and they said it was because of her show.

You know it IS a good idea. Now how can we go about putting this in action? Unfortunately where I live, Oprah and Maury come on at the same time. Hard decision. Grow Long Hair or Paternity Tests Gone Wild...I dunno:lol:

Oprah had two, great shows just like the "salon experience" thread around 1998 or so. The audience was predominantly black for these shows and were given mikes to share their horrifying experiences in black salons, exactly like what has been discussed here. Oprah had to do two shows because it got so heated with stylists being sued for leaving relaxers on too long, etc.

I love the idea of LHCF members on Oprah. This hair issue is hot and needs to be addressed.

Wow I had no idea. Perhaps we do need another one for the new generation of stylists. We also need to tackle the topic of these hair products that contain ingredients that only dry your hair out so that you'll have to buy more and more. Maybe such a show will inspire black women to go out and take control of OUR industry. We need hair product lines made for us by us.

I read on a hairboard, maybe it was here, someone mentioned they saw "Oprah after the Show" and they were talking about Oprah's hair for a few seconds. Oprah started to mention Phyto, and Andre started hushing her up. What's up with that? Why can't they do a show where we talk about our hair secrets, including hers?

I was just thinking about this other day. You know the theme could be something like Black Women can and do Grow Long hair and we've got proof today! OMG, she could have heads from here and nappturality. The women could share their hair secrets, talk about all healthy hair being good hair, etc. I would love it!

I've thought about LHCF on Oprah many times, especially after we come out with our book:) We can offer something a stylist can't - people of ALL hair types showing what grows hair. We have naturals, texlaxed, relaxed, self relaxers, stylist relaxed. We use a wide range of products - no stylist can match us for sheer volume of products:grin:

Image, a representative parade of ladies with long natural, relaxed, texlaxed hair. I tell you it would get HUGE ratings!!! Everyone would want our book too:lachen:

Maybe Oprah has to have permission first before giving out product names (like Aveda), otherwise it could backlash.

I would love for Oprah to do some shows regarding healthy hair care for women of color. There sure are some members of LHCF who could be a part of that show. Andre should do one on hair care, too and show examples of his hair typing system using people of all ethnic backgrounds, provide tips and answer questions from the audience. That would be terrific!!! :yep:

You know what would be good...
regarding Oprah's "50 years to grow a ponytail" comment...
if loads of LHCF members went and stood outside her studio, wearing their hair in ponytails and held up boards saying '1 year', '3 years', '7 years' etc.... how long it look to grow it (actually grow it, not including any bad hair care related time)

It might also be a good idea to do this in an email writing campaign. Members could send those pics to her in an email also. We could mention that this was prompted in response to her comment about her ponytail.

***I still don't understand why she said that when she used to have long thick hair when she was younger.****

Yeah, good idea. Especially if it was arranged that everyone would send their emails on the same day or the same week.

Maybe she felt like being over dramatic

Well let's get to crackin'! Quit talkin' about it and be about it! Let's pick a timeframe and work on the details of what we are going to say and send in! Should we look to start our campaign the middle to the end of this month? Or early August? I want to make sure we have time to get our pictures together and them maybe we could also draft a general outline of what we should say in our e-mails. We don't want tosay the same thing, but we should have the same basic points. Ya' dig?

So let's get rollin'!

I second this. I just started growing my hair out so I have not pics; :p but I 've seen more than a few ladies who have never had long hair grow their hair out. I think this could work.

 Yeah my ponytail is nothing to talk about...yet. As you said though there are numerous females on here that could send her pics. I'll be the late one and send her pics in May 2007(My Hair Unveiling). Seriously guys we should do this. If she gets enough pics it may fascinate her and she may want to invite us or ya'll:lol: to her show!

This thread is full of good ideas... minus Andre's involvement. lol. Didnt he say that black women with hair in the 4 category cant grow hair?

I watched Oprah's 20th anniversary today and she looks so much younger today than 20 years ago!! Looks like she wore her natural hair when she first started out too. She had a TWA and grew it out.

I had a dream that I was on the Oprah show for this very same reason.
Things that should be brought up in letter and/or interview:

  • Dispelling myths of hair and haircare
  • Relationship/unity that is formed between us
  • The desire to set other goals for your body, finances, etc (after discovering hair boards) Overall self evaulation
  • Hair types 1-4 are in all nationalities (blacks can be a 2 and whites can be a 4a)
  • Finding products right for you within ea price range
  • Sexy Protective styles
  • Heat is not always your friend
  • Before and after picks
(Also, I think if we can get between 75-150 writing in that will be better, than writing one big letter (it maybe over looked)
And if we can get an X amount of people to email her as well that would be great.

I think this is a really good idea. Oprah has been spewing nonsense about black hair on her show for 20 years. I think it's only right that she devote one episode to black women who have had success growing and maintaining their hair. Plus, this topic should be of personal interest to Oprah.
