What ever happened to COPA?

Do yall remeber that infomercial starring Debbie Allen selling COPA a few years back? that hair straighting system? Its supposed to be gentler than a perm, and if i remember correctly, it is supposed to be natural and safe for all hair types? I was just thinking about it and am wondering if anybody here ever used it. Do they even still make it? I havent heard about it in a long time, but i remember watching that infomercial thinking i wanted to try it.

I think COPA was the name of it... i wonder if the letters stand for something....

That reminds me of that all-natural relaxer infomercial that was around years and years back that had the guineas' hair lookin so silky shiny and bouncy. It was so natural that they were actually tasting it. Is that the one you were referrering to? If not, does someone remember what I'm talking about?

Unless I 'm getting it confused with something else, I think COPA went out of business b/c it caused so much damage to women's hair (some losing all of their hair). They were sued by numerous people and the product was taken off the market.

I used it back when I was a liitle girl so I don't remember what the results were like. But I remember feeling a bit let down because I wanted my hair just as smooth as the women in the commercial and it did not happen. It is no longer made perhaps due to the lawsuits brought aginst them. I remember hearing a few years ago about a lawsuit against the copa makers. I googled copa hair and sure enough I got serveral hits on the lawsuit against copa. I read a couple of them and it claims unauthorized charges were placed on peoples credit cards and also the active ingredient would weaken peoples hair instead of strenghten it. Now that I'm older I'm more critical of the things I put on my hair and as for infomercials I believe if it's too good to be true it probably is.

Hopefully they took the remainder of it and blasted it into outer space!

I never tried it myself, thank goodness, but I only heard terrible things about it.

Anyone remember some face cleaning system that they used to have an informercial for called "Egyptian Goddess"? Tisha Campbell was in some of them.

I don't know if COPA is still around anymore. I know they got in trouble with the FTC a few years ago for shady business practices. They were ordered to pay $100,000 in civil penalties and $200,000+ to those customers who were charged for products but never received them. I know they also got in trouble for false advertising for its claims about it being a "natural" product when there were definitely chemicals in it which worked to alter hair texture.

I remember what you're talking about. That was the Rio Hair Naturalizer System and it was out back in the mid-90's. It was not the natural product it was claimed to be and there were several thousand women (including quite a few I knew personally) who ended up with severe hair loss and scalp irritation from its use. I think the parent company, World Rio Corporation, ended up going under due the amount of damages it had to pay out in lawsuits.

I remember the infomercial where the guy stuck his finger in the container, put it in his mouth, and ate it.

I knew it was too good to be true. I'm so glad I never tried it.

I tried Rio, it made my hair hard and dyed it jet black, but thankfully it didn't fall out.

I was gun shy when it came to COPA, the only selling point was that Debbie Allen let the dude use it on her daughters hair to kinda prove how much she trusted the product.

These products are the reason why I wait a couple of months (4-6 usually) for other people to report back on their experience with new products before I start experimenting on my own head.

In Cathy Howse's book she talks about how COPA was damaging people's hair. They had a lot of complaints about the product taking people's hair out.

COPA is still on the market. They just changed the name to Nair :lachen:

I believe it too....it burned all my girlfriend's hair off. She couldn't get it to grow back for years. I don't know if she has any hair to this day.:(

Oh gracious!!!! :perplexed

I don't know about the copa, but I beleive Debbie Allen also backed Rio. My mom and niece tried this back in the day. Both of their hair started coming out in patches and my Mom developed a rash and knots on her neck. They were involved in the lawsuit as well.
Thank Goodness I never got around to trying it!

Ha! I remember my grandmother always telling me to try it. She hated that I used relaxers. She thought that COPA might be better and was even attempting to order it for me. I am so glad it did not happen.

I remember thinking about trying COPA, after hearing this I am glad I didn't! Along the same line, remember that product RIO that destroyed all those women's hair. It was supposed to be a natural relaxer too.

That guy's name was SNACKY!! Everytime I heard them say it I'd have giggle fits! :lachen: :lachen: :lachen:

Yeah I remember Snacky what kind of name is that. :lachen:

Yeah Rio got me, the infomercials were so convincing to me at 13. The would have the model shake their silky hair. I begged my dad to order it. It smelled like vanilla pudding. My hair didn't fall out but it got really dry and broke off. I went from neck length to ear length. :( I didn't attribute it to the Rio until I went to the salon and they mentioned that people had been having problems w/ it :perplexed . Took me till my senior year to grow that mess back.

When I saw COPA I said on no not this again. Everytime I see Debbie Allen I think "shame on you for peddling that stuff."

Oh no I remeber COPA. I remeber seeing the infomercial and I thought I finally had a chance at silky healthy hair. I saved up the 30 some dollars it costed ( thi s was back when I was in 8th grade) and bought it. So when it came I was so excited. I followed the directions word for word and....realized it was $30 dollars down the drain. It did absolutley nothing. Then I read I may have to use more than one applications before seeing any results. I was so disappointed but now I realize I was actually was lucky my hair didnt fall out in clumps.

I remember this stuff.... i never knew! My peoples grandfather had a full head of beautiful natural cornrows and i remember his wife suggesting he try using this to get his hair straighter... he must not have used it all. his hair is only healthier and longer than it was b4.

Yes ladies! It was Rio..ha ha..I just mentioned it to my mom and we were talking about how they tasted it and I just told her what happened with the lawsuits and stuff and she was like "See! I told you that stuff was too good to be real!" I use to watch that and beg her to get it for me but she didn't and for good reason! Ha, I wish I could see it again though, just for old times sake.

When I saw Debbie on American Idol the other night, that's the first thing I thought about. I wonder if COPA hurt Debbie's career.:D

I used it when I was around 12. It did nothing to my hair except make it blacker. Thank God that's all it did. I didn't have hair or scalp issues with it. My hair just laughed at it.

OMG. Flashback. I actually used this. It worked. The key to the silkiness was that you still had to hot comb your hair after the process to see the silkiness.
