What are your standards for TV viewing?

A few years ago, I watched the televised Victoria Secret Fashion show (I can't remember what year; I think it was the last one with Tyra Banks). I admit that I watched it for fitness inspiration, and because simply put, the supermodels are gorgeous! As I was watching, I thought to myself "There is no way I'd sit through something like this with a SO or DH!!" :look: This must be a huge temptation for men (as evidenced by the men in the audience that were literally drooling).

I just caught the halftime Superbowl performance on Youtube (I am not a football fan and my allegiance is to Downton Abbey ), and again, had the thought that men trying to stay pure must have a huge huge battle to fight in today's culture.

That led me to wonder: What are your personal standards when watching TV? Are there some shows you'd watch alone but not with your SO/DH?

DISCLAIMER: Please, this is not a thread about the performer at this year's Superbowl show. I ain't trying to start a fight. :)

I don't watch much tv because, frankly, there's a lot of garbage on there. I do watch movies and shows on Netflix. Growing up, we couldn't watch anything with romantic content. Back then there wasn't cursing on there so no issues with that.

I remember one time hearing all the hype about Gossip Girls and decided to check it out and I couldn't get over the fact that these were high school students carrying on. Needless to say, I didn't get beyond the 1st episode. The average person has no clue (or just doesn't care) what they put into the minds but I think it has an effect, even if it's subtle. I try to avoid vulgar language, immoral content, obviously anti-Christian content, etc. This carries over into what I read and listen to as well: you would never catch me reading something like 50 Shades of Gray (which is pornographic fiction really) and I don't really listen much to the radio.

I don't watch much tv. I don't have any shows that I watch in a regular basis either. If I turn the tv on, which isn't everyday, and I catch something "decent" I'll watch it. If it becomes vulgar, sexual, or as Belle Du Jour said, anti-Christian then I change the channel or turn the tv off completely. I used to love shows like Girlfriends and Martin but it wasn't until fully submitting to Jesus Christ and his Word that I realized those shows had sexual content that was way over the top and the Bible says for us to turn away our eyes from beholding vanity.

I prefer to read, but I stick with Christian content. Since Belle Du Jour mentioned 50 Shades of Gray, which I'd never read as well, there is a pretty awesome book on Amazon Kindle called 50 Shades of Black and White which is a Biblical response to 50 Shades of Grey and it talks about the consequenses for people who engage in such behavior as well what it does to the "Christians" who read it...

I think most people do not realize that watching, reading, and listening to the wrong thing actually plants things in your soul and opens portals for the devil. However, I'm fully aware most "Christians" do not believe this.

No cursing, no nudity, no Anti-Christian sentiments and no atheism or the like.

I was watching iCarly and Spencer was running around in white briefs and everything was printing out! I was like ummm Nick?!

This is so true. The Bible says to be on guard at all times because Satan is very clever. He has a lot of folks convinced they are doing "ok" because they aren't committing murder, adultery, stealing, etc. There are more sins than those. . . Also, how can you grow spiritually if you are polluting your mind with these things? No man can serve two masters because he will eventually love one more than the other. Many have chosen the world and its temporary pleasures.

That's interesting. I didn't know such a book had been released.

From the reviews I've heard about, there are loads of secular women that wouldn't touch 50 Shades of Gray because of the way it objectifies women, and not for spiritual reasons. A Christian woman has to do some serious mental and spiritual rationalization to justify reading something like that.

True! You realize you don't miss all the junk once you step out of it. The bus shuttle to work always has the local Top 40 radio station playing in the morning. Some of the lyrics...:perplexed

Nothing witchy, pagan, demonic (so that excludes all things Oprah)...

Basically Golden Girls and I love Lucy. Lol

Nick = baby MTV = Viacom: why the shock? Because even if the boy wasn't running around in underpants, the little girls are so snarky and know-it-all-ish, that was enough to know it was going to be garbation.

Hi OP! I mainly watch youtube which I love because I can pick and choose what I want to see and no commercials! when I am watching tv it's mainly my fav old shows or food network. I totally cannot stomach the news (which i know is bad, but it depresses me) nor reality tv, however I have been watching "the sisterhood"! Only because I'm mainly intrigued by how we (as Christians) are being viewed by the world, and how we are being portrayed on the show. but that's really about all I watch on tv!

As God draws me closer and closer to Him there are fewer and fewer things that I can stomach watching. I watch a lot less TV! I pray all the time that God will bless us with a biblical world view and enable us to easily discern ungodly, humanist influences. DH and I are also very watchful of what the children are exposed to in regards to TV and radio. I do like to watch some of the documentaries on Current TV. We also still watch the Brady Bunch, I Love Lucy, Leave It to Beaver, and Father Knows Best. We also love old black and white movies. I guess we're pretty old fashioned --lol!

OMGoodness. A crying shame.

I used to really enjoy watching iCarly with my daughters until I noticed it going down hill. I believe the shows start out kind of safe and then you begin to notice them easing in the sexual innuendos and other adult themes.

Sigh...

I completely agree - I wonder how some of the songs are actually allowed on the radio.

I do love The Good Wife... I probably need to ax that one too - but I really enjoy the story lines.
