What are the dumbest things you heard about hair?

All these myths/statements are interesting, a lot of them I heard growing up. But don't you think these people who made them up were on to something or had the right idea in mind? For example: 1) If you trim your hair it will grow- trimming your hair rids of the split ends that travel up the hair shaft and breaks the hair so if you have healthy ends your hair is less damaging. 2) Dirty hair will grow- that's probably b/c there was less hair management, pulling, tangling since they didn't wash their hair. 3) Hair grease will make your hair grow- that was probably the main form of moisture around...moisture is the key! 4) Washing hair more than once a week will cause it to be dry and break off- with shampoo yea! that's why we do CO washes.

Needless to say, I believe these statements are false (of course)!

I'VE HEARD ...
IF YOU CUT YOUR HAIR SHORT, IT WILL GROW BACK THICKER.
TRIMMING MAKES YOUR HAIR GROW.
GREASE MAKES HAIR GROW.
BLACK WOMEN CAN'T GROW REALLY LONG HAIR!
BLACK PEOPLE HAIR GROWS SLOWER THAN OTHER RACES!
WASHING FREQUENTLY MAKES OUR HAIR DRY!
WEAVES MAKES HAIR GROW!
HAIR IS LIVING! (THE ACTUAL STRAND ITSELF IS DEAD)!!!
HAIR PILLS MAKE HAIR GROW! (HAIR PILLS PROVIDE NOURISHMENT FOR HAIR TO STRENGTHEN IT.) SHOOT... I WISH THERE WAS A MAGIC PILL TO GIVE ME 10 INCHES PER YEAR! LOL!

You have to grease your scalp to make it grow.
You can only use "black" hair products. Using "white" products will make your hair fall out.
Trimming makes your hair grow faster.
And of course that water will dry out your hair.

I don't think they were on to anything. People tend to practice habits that are taught. Many people that still grease their scalp and rarely wash their hair are not the ones growing hair. I do agree with the trimming of the hair to keep the ends healthy and split end free.

If someone was getting their hair done outside (braided on the porch in the summertime)...my aunt would tell us...don't throw the hair, from the comb, on the ground because if a bird uses the hair in their nest, you will get migraine headaches

I agree with what you're saying. I just meant that they had the right idea in mind just the wrong practice. Does that make better sense?

The next was that natural hair is healthier than relaxed hair.

I'm inclined to believe that hair without any type of chemical process (virgin hair) whether it be a relaxer/curly perm/texturizer/perm. color is going to be healthier.
