Black people can't grow long hair unless they're mixed..

[/ QUOTE ]

I hear this one a lot. If a black woman has hair past her shoulders she has to be biracial.

And the same people are confused when they see a biracial person with kinky hair. "She can't be mixed..."

This has nothing to do with hair, but...

A white friend told me that when he was in elementary school he thought white people came from Adam & Eve and black people came from monkeys.
frown.gif
No one told him this--he came up with it on his own. He said when he was young black people looked like monkeys to him. I told him he must have gone to school with some ugly a** kids.

When I was little, my friends and I used to wear cornrows. Our white friends used to think that our mother's used to braid our hair every single day. But I must admit, my mother had to tell me about extensions in braids, I just thought that it was really their hair.

"11)If you get grey hair when you were young...that means you were a good baby..."

I guess then I'm a good 21-year old, too! I've still got them.

to all the above - are these people actually living on planet earth?

Sometimes when people (white) compliment me on my hair they ask 'is it real?'. So they think that our hair does not grow and if it looks nice it MUST be fake or must be mixed with another race - we cannot possibly have 'pretty' hair.

This is recent - I heard a white boy in my school say he was afraid to get cornrows because it'll hurt to take them out... he thought because the braids were actually GLUED to the scalp! He didn't understand the braiding technique... lol!

Back when I was little (like 9) my friend said she puts clear nail polish in her hair. WHAT??? The funny thing is, this girl had the nicest hair longest I've ever seen (at the time).

White friend said to me: "You're so lucky, you don't know what I have to go through to take care of my hair... all you have to do is slick it back" Excuse me, why are you assuming you know what I do?

My roomate said to me: "I can't exercise too much, I don't want to sweat out my perm"

That's hilarious because it would mean that most West African women, who could care less about buying hair, have it lol!

The comment I heard the most often is that black women can't grow their hair long. But when a black woman is wearing extension braids most white people don't even notice it's fake hair. So the first time I wore extension braids in high school this white classmate really thought that I had just pulled the braids out of my scalp overnight! I was so shocked that I didn't even know what to say to her... But then again, this was the same girl who thought that because of the colour of my skin that my blood must also be black! Can you imagine??

That happened to me too! My hair was about ear length on friday and I got braids over the weekend. The length was about brastrap and this Indian girl thought it was all my hair. LOL

LOL I've heard that one alot!

I think the craziest ones I heard are...

"Black women only wash their hair once a month!"

"People that have dreadlocks cannot wash their hair! "

Yes, now the secret is out...it is true...we only wash our hair once a month. We all call each other on our *black people* walkie talkies and synchronize our hair washing.

*Sigh*

Thank god ignorance isn't contagious!

You should never wash your hair when you are menstrating.

Yeah my aunt actually thinks washing your hair will give you cramps while menstruating. Funny though she has no proof to back it up.

"Every black person with hair down their back or to the waist is mixed with something"
"The hair in your comb is dead hair" knowing damn where all hair is dead protein
"Leaving hair unwashed makes hair grow"
"Black people still saying a person has good hair or that they have indian in there family"

Me too! It's so funny- these European girls at school were amazed when I showed up with butt-length braids- they couldn't believe how long my hair was!
But in their defense, just as they told me, they had no idea of my length because it's always bunned up

Well this Bori-mex girl told me that if Black people get sand in their hair, the hair will fall out unless we wash it out as soon as possible
confused.gif
. I don't know if that's true but I can remember getting loads of sand in my hair when I was little and all I was worried about was how much it was a pain to wash my hair.

I heard this tonite. Micro braids make my hair grow faster than cornrolls. I didn't even argue.

That you can actually "wash out" a relaxer. I've heard doing it with beer or vinegar.

That nappy hair is bad or unmanagable.

Dredlocks are dirty.

Only black people with "good hair" should wear their hair natural.

1. Black people shouldn't wash their hair more frequently than once a week otherwise it will dry out

[/ QUOTE ]

Along the lines of that, I was taught, not that washing was bad, but just that I didn't need to wash my relaxed hair more often than every two weeks. Luckily I was enlightened by you all. Two out of my last three relaxers my mom told me not to wash my hair right after I get it relaxed because she thinks it is wasting the money. I don't know if she thinks/thought that you can wash out a relaxer or if she was concerned with the style. Whatever. I am doing what my hair needs to be healthy.

What I cannot believe is that I met two black college students who earnestly believe water is bad for African American hair, but not for the hair of other races. They told me that water dries out our hair. One of them was especially shocked when I told her about conditioner washes. She said it was bad for my hair, "especially since you air dry your hair." What?!
confused.gif
It was strange because other than that she was very knowledgeable about hair care.

On a different note, don't you find it strange and particularly sad that the idea that our hair is bad is so ingrained within our own race?
frown.gif

mine has got to be the dirtier your hair the more it grows. my mom use to tell me this crap all the time when i was younger. my head always felt dirty and itchie. my sister still believes this mess. she is still bald, while my clean hair is getting longer..........

If someone was getting their hair done outside (braided on the porch in the summertime)...my aunt would tell us...don't throw the hair, from the comb, on the ground because if a bird uses the hair in their nest, you will get migraine headaches
nuts.gif

"Black women only wash their hair once a month!"
huh.gif

sadly, i believed my mom when she told me this when i was a kid...
blush.gif
however my hair was waistlength (i still don't understand how this was possible, maybe because i always wore protective styles?)
she also told me that i shouldn't wash my hair while menstruating, i always ignored this, that's too ridiculous..

I was told that if a bird got it you would be bald all of the days of your life because the bird would be pecking it out.
