If someone was getting their hair done outside (braided on the porch in the summertime)...my aunt would tell us...don't throw the hair, from the comb, on the ground because if a bird uses the hair in their nest, you will get migraine headaches

I was told that if a bird got it you would be bald all of the days of your life because the bird would be pecking it out.

What I cannot believe is that I met two black college students who earnestly believe water is bad for African American hair, but not for the hair of other races. They told me that water dries out our hair.

I am one of the people who you had that conversation with and I did not say that water dries out ALL black people's hair. I said that when I rinse my hair, after the water dries my hair is VERY dry unless I put oil back in it. And many other black women told me that it does the same thing to their hair. Therefore, I know from experience what works best for my hair so I will do accordingly just as you continue to do your rinses and other things that work for your hair.

Re: What are the dumbest things you heard about ha

Just a thought: Could you be living somewhere with hard water? I understand everyone's entitled to their own opinion, however I have a hard time understanding when people say that water is bad for black people's hair. We as humans are 70% water from the inside out. When you keep your skin misted with water regularly it will not dry out, so why not hair? A lot of ladies here have stated they get good results from distilled water. Just food for though.

Re: What are the dumbest things you heard about ha

Hard water does make a difference. When I am at home the water is great on campus it is a totally different thing.

Re: What are the dumbest things you heard about ha

This is from the cosmetology student that did my braids last year, she is also a nursing student and a close friend of my cousin.

"Black people who have had relaxers can't grow their hair out natural because it will break off."

"Why do you rinse your hair so much all you need is oil to make it grow."

I recently put highlights in my hair and I went to visit a friend. She said, "Why did you put that color in your hair!! Black people hair cannot take color because it is not strong enough!! Your hair is going to fall out now!!"

She is the same person that told me that I think I am white or mexican because I wash/rinse my hair a lot. She claims that is bad because . . . you guessed it!!! Dirt makes your hair grow!!! All this coming from somebody whose hair is no longer than 1" all over. Judging by the difference between her hair and my hair, I can't figure out why she is sticking by these stories

i forgot to add my myth, actually its an old wives tale

Letting a woman who's jealous of you cut your hair, will make it stop growing

i've heard this SOOOOO many times since i've been natural, it just boggles my mind.

it's as if folx are born with a sign on 'em that says, "i can go/stay natural cause everybody thinks i have 'good hair,'" or "i can't go/stay natural; hair's too nappy." i don't get it.

Re: What are the dumbest things you heard about ha

You cant let anybody do your hair because some people's hands make your hair fall out or something to that effect.

Re: What are the dumbest things you heard about ha

I've always heard the one about dirt making your hair grown and washing too often makes your hair dry. I believed the one about water until last summer.

Re: What are the dumbest things you heard about ha

By far the dumbest thing I've ever heard is the relaxers AREN'T damaging. That burning chemical is GREAT for your hair and scalp, and also dissloves rust, lime, and calicium build up in tubs and toilets.

Actually, it DOES dissolve rust, lime, and calcium. Cleans a bathroom like new. That one is true.

OMG, that's a wild comment. However, the lack of exposure to certain things will lead to such comments.

I can't cut my baby girl's hair
baby2.gif
because I will "ruin" it and make it nappy. And that my son has "bad" hair because I cut it to soon.

I don't understand. How does cutting the ends of the hair affect how it grows out of the sclap
nuts.gif

It doesn't once the follicles mature, the texture and color of the hair can change, that is basic biology.

When I was younger, when i would get my hair done at the salon people would tell me to never cut my hair because it would never grow back.

I actually believed that for awhile, I knew deep down that did not make any sense.
ohwell.gif
how stupid of me.lol

The dumbest thing I heard was African-American hair should only be washed once a month. The next was that natural hair is healthier than relaxed hair. Then there are some girls I know who think only greasy hair is moisturized.

I heard: don't wash your hair too often, it will fall out. Also, when trimming the ends your hair will grow faster. (how lame)
Brushing your hair a hundred times each night will make it grow.

I'm inclined to believe that hair without any type of chemical process (virgin hair) whether it be a relaxer/curly perm/texturizer/perm. color is going to be healthier.

Re: What are the dumbest things you heard about ha

Someone was asking me about my hair regime and I told them that I do co washes and her mother commented that she should not do co washes because her hair would probably be gone in a week.

She just kindly ingnored her mother and proceeded to ask for more information.
