Years ago a white girl told me that she told me that she thought black women's grew out straight, and that only the black men had kinky hair.

I pretty much heard the same things you heard in different variations...especially the one about leaving your hair dirty to make it grow...Ughhh, how could the hair grow with a clogged up, greasy, smelly scalp.

Our hair is not touchable...
There is a section in Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America called A Helping of Good Old-Fashioned Black Hair Superstitions:
They listed some of the following:
3)Always cover your hair when menstruating
4)If youallow more than one person to work on your hair at a time your hair will fall out...the youngest worker/helper will die.
5)Don't let a pregnant woman do your hair or you'll become pregnant too.
7)Never cut a boy's hair before age one or it wont grow...or it will be kinky and nappy (I think a AA boys hair will be that way anyway right?)
11)If you get grey hair when you were young...that means you were a good baby...(I must have been an angel

The comment I heard the most often is that black women can't grow their hair long. But when a black woman is wearing extension braids most white people don't even notice it's fake hair. So the first time I wore extension braids in high school this white classmate really thought that I had just pulled the braids out of my scalp overnight! I was so shocked that I didn't even know what to say to her... But then again, this was the same girl who thought that because of the colour of my skin that my blood must also be black! Can you imagine??

This white girl told me that she didn't know there was makeup for black people she thought that only black celebrities wore makeup and only then when they get it custom made.
