things you can't get away with now that you have longer hair

This thread is for all who have long hair!!

**DISCLAIMERS**
-If it's long to you, it's long!
-No discrimination against hair texture or current state (relaxed, heat trained, natural, etc)

I've been reflecting on this for the last few months. Now that my hair is slowly approaching waist length, I'm noticing that I can't really get away with certain things like I used to when my hair was much shorter. It was no big deal at all for me to walk out of the house with damp hair when my hair was basically a curly fro. I'd put a headband on and it wouldn't even touch my shoulders. Now my hair curls around the tops of my shoulders and a bit past in the back, and wash and gos are slowly turning into more of an ordeal.

I'm having to change the way I do things: wash and go at night or get up early to give my hair a head start on drying time; I've started detangling in sections b/c with the extra length seems to come extra thickness; I find that I don't like to mess with my hair as much, so I'm more motivated to try and get multiple day hair, and so on. Having shoulder length unstretched kinks and curls has really changed up a lot of what I do.

Wet buns are heavy and it seems I can't handle all of the extra weight (headache prone).

Of course with longer hair, there are a lot of perks. It's just that there is also a lot of adjustment.

What are some things that you used to be able to do with short hair that you can't do now with longer hair? What are some adjustments that you have had to make when caring for your hair?

Can't leave the house with wet hair. Now that my hair lays in my clothing....if I leave too soon my back is all wet.

Hair product expense is ridiculous. Can't get away with 8oz bottles and sample sizes anymore.

One hour roller sets. Wave Bye bye bye!

Air drying overnight. Wave bye bye bye!

This is what I deal with now that I'm grazing WL.

Lol. I just said the same thing about leaving the house w sopping wet hair in the Anthony Dickey thread. My hair takes forever to dry and my clothes are ruined in the meantime.

I can't just put on a wig cap and throw on a wig. Now I have to detangle my hair and braid it underneath

Exclusively finger detangling (shedding a big ol' thug tear for this one)

Wearing unstretched styles

Air drying without at least 2-3 days notice :nono:

No under an hour wash/style days.
No skimping on detangling.
No low quality products.
No low quality tools.

It's all invest now or pay later with my hair.

I actually do the opposite , I don't have time to do all that ,I wash, condition quickly ,detangle quickly and air dry . It takes too long to DC and don't have time for that anymore .
I also find it easier to straighten my hair as its heavier .
The only con is that shedding looks alot worse as the strands are longer and the hair gets trapped everywhere .
My son use it as reins . :look:

My hair never dries, I always end up blasting it with at least a quick blow dry.
Use a 'dime' size amount of things.
I used to think that as my hair gets longer it will be more wearable in its natural state, instead it's huge. I can't see around it, it matts more easily and its generally harder to wear in its natural state.

Being natural when they say a *dime* size amout we knew to use more but now that my hair is close to mid back length I am using more product then ever those lil 8oz's are a no go I am investing in gallons of stuff now...

Yes girl let me try and act new and wear an unstretched style I surly will pay the price come detangling time:nono:

Understandable you and I have different hair types. If some of those quicker practices worked without penalty on my hair, I would use them too.

Detangling all at once right before washing -- I have to start the process a few days before

Exclusively finger detangling-- takes way too long

Installing mini twists bi-monthly-- takes too long, so I can only do it once a month or less

Caring about splits and ssks-- no point in stressing them... The longer my hair gets the more frequent they become

lol

Washing my hair in the kitchen sink. I hate it when my hair hits the bottom of the sink. YUCK!

I hate that!!

shed hair definitely looks a lot scarier now lol. when I get out of the shower it's like I left behind a curly wig

Yes! My detangling sessions produce massive hair balls which have about 20-30 strands. Yes I counted once :look:

No more:
-Doing my hair in the car  Not enough room for me to wind my hair into a bun or ponytail!
-Super defined braidouts. 7 braids MAX vs my usual 20 braids.
-Wet buns, too much weight!

And more time with my blow dryer. Can't always wait around for my hair to dry!

Even though I know it isn't truly a lot of hair, it's still pretty horrific to to pull out handfuls of fluff from my combs lol

I'm an exclusive air dryer, so this has been a trying time for me lol. I hate blow dryers :(

Twists are out of the window. Just not worth the effort anymore (I can't going we than two weeks without washing, that means shrunken matted twists)

Wash and gos shrink unevenly now

Heat damage sticks around longer

Leaving my hair out on hot days... This sucks because I like feeling my hair on my back, but when it's too hot it makes me feel like I'm wearing a scarf.

I have to trim. HAVE TO. I do it every 3-4 months but I could stand to do it bi-monthly. And wash'n'go's are a big hayle no.

I needed this kackle today!!:lachen: girl you a mess lol

Here's a weird one I just noticed. I used to co-wash in the morning, and let the conditioner sit with my hair loose while I did my showering thing. Now, I either end up with conditioner on my body while I wash or soap in my hair unless I clip it up. Also there is no longer a pony high enough to keep my hair from touching my neck when working out.

This too^^^^Yep...high pony means wet ends from sweat on my neck.
