Self-hating naturals :Nono:

The other day, a co-worker and I were chatting about weaves and whatnot. She mostly wears weaves and I asked her who did such a great job maintaining her hair. She told me, gave me the ladies number; we talked about prices and hair care and she revealed to me that she was natural! I was excited because I don't know of many naturals here in nc that aren't dreaded. She said her stylist refuses to relax her hair. I began liking this stylist more and more! :yep: When I asked her if she ever wears her hair out the co-worker explained that her hair was thinner than she'd like and that she preferred weaves. I thought she meant, "for now". I guess because I wear wigs and braids and weaves and whatnot most of the time for protection styles only. There's no part of me that is ashamed of my natural hair, especially now that I'm giving my hair proper care.

Fast forward. I took my braids down a week ago and I've been experimenting with my hair out until I braid it back up tomorrow. The first time I saw her at work, I was wearing a lightly pressed southern tease bun and was feeling so proud! I went to show her because we'd just been bonding over hair talk, right? She said, "Oh! That's some thick stuff!" (stuff?) "That's thick!!" I just smiled my hello and continued to my work.

So today was the incident that finally brought me to comment. It's the last day for me to enjoy my natural hair for a couple of months. I decided to really do it up with a fro-hawk! I had a hump in the front, with my beautiful puffs in the back and some chandelier earrings. I was really feeling too cute! As I walked past her desk, she says to me accusatorily, "You're still wearing your hair out?! HUMPH" I was still pleasant, "Yep!"

Her: "Well do you at least straighten it?" frowning, too!
Me: "Not often"
Her: "Well you should at least pull a hot comb through it. When was the last time you had a perm?"
Me: "13 years, or more now"
Her: "What?!"
Her neighbor, and buddy: "Don't tell nobody else that" as if not having had a perm is something to be ashamed of?? Not to mention that this neighbor of hers that burst into the conversation has damaged ear length hair

I finally asked, "What is there about being natural to be ashamed of?" My voice was aggitated and suddenly they had nothing to say. I just shook my head and walked away. A couple of nuts, they are.

Don't get me wrong. I love hair, period! I'm not opposed to relaxers or any kind of style. If you like it, I love it! I do have a problem, however, with the ignorance that still surrounds natural 4a/b hair. If I had silky curls, no doubt she would have ooh'd and ah'd and wondered why I cover them up. But my hair, even though it was fierce today :yep: , caused her issue.

Even my man said the style reminded him of a Janet Jackson cover. Now that's what I'm talking about!

Sorry to rant on you all, but it really got to me. I just wanted to get it out. No worries, as my hair grows to bra strap over the coming year, I'm sure she'll have more and more to say.

Don't pay any attention to them. Just sad really...and people are mad at Chris Rock's documentary???!

Wow. You definitely handled yourself VERY well. Good for you! I don't have a problem at all with relaxed heads (hell, I was one myself not too long ago!), but I wish more of us would embrace and respect our sisters who do decide to wear their natural hair.

OH NO THEY DIDN'T!! You handled it with more composure than I would have...:look: They might as well have said "napps aren't allowed here" Ridiculous!

Even though I'm relaxed, I have to completely disagree with your co-workers. It's not until women start to blantantly bash someone else's hair choice that there becomes a problem :wallbash: . I'll have to agree with the other ladies that you handled yourself in a very commendable manner. What cracks me up are ladies whose hair is broken off and damaged, trying to give advice:lachen:. Like Ive said before, you will not listen to a bum tell you how to get rich. You just keep on growing, long and strong, NATURALLY, and let the haters keep on hating.

Thanks so much for the encouragement, ladies. And I am pretty proud that I didn't go off on them, because I really was ticked off. I'm even more grateful to lhcf because I had the confidence I had in my hair because of the info I've garnered on this forum. They couldn't shake me and I KNEW my hair was flyy.

Thank you, Danigur! Yours is, too! And your progress is :thud: :yep:

You handled it great!
I met a lady like this last year while I was serving on the African-American heritage committee shortly after I did the BC. She wore some of the nicest wigs and weaves and told me that she was natural but would never walk out of the house like that. I was like O...K....

People have issues.

Them crows at your job are just mad! I wanna see your styles!

Yea, you handed yourself good, I don't know what's going on with peeps hating on natural hair....I like natural hair, any type from 3a to 4z, I don't hate on no natural or no relaxed, now if they are lookin like a busted window then, I get a lil upset cuz they know they can do better.....one day I will probably be natural so no need to hate, but they are a bunch of haters!!!! Shake those haters off girl!

Oh yes they did, Perlenoire! And they should have already known, too. I did your version of the flapper chignon while I had long braids and walked in there too fierce! It is tutorials like yours that make me comfortable wearing my hair natural. Thank you very much.

Tell me about it, LadyE. How you gonna have a natural and hate on naturals. I mean, that's just twisted. I've got a couple styles for you! I've got a twist out that I did on pressed hair. And on my natural I've done twists, twist outs, side buns, souther tease buns and now fro hawks. Girlfriend, it is on with my natural thing! Me and my hair are just so in love right now. I'll be putting together a fotki, soon. Very soon! I've been taking pics but haven't begun posting yet. Stay tuned :yep:

Oh you're good.

I probably would have told them about themselves, especially miss ear length damaged jumpin into the conversation *****...
People are strange.

Oh but one question what's a "lightly pressed southern tease bun?"

I get that reation sometimes too. Folks see my natural hair when it is flat ironed and wondered why I wore an afro. I just ignore them.

Thanks for sharing your story. I am planning to wear my hair out "natural" tomorrow at work for the first time. I am a little nervous now. I hope that I can handle any stupid people as well as you did.

A good friend of mine inspired me to go natural. In the past 3 years I think I have seen her natural hair maybe 2 times. I beg her to let it out or stop braiding it so much but she won't do it.

You know, MagnoliaBelle, don't worry at all! I guess it's unfair that I created a whole thread dedicated to these two when I work in a building with 400 people and have received nothing but positive responses from everyone else who had something to say. Lots of great stuff like, "Your curls are gorgeous!"
"Denise, you've got good hair!" whatever that is  "Why don't you wear your hair out more often?"
"Your hair is so long! I didn't know you had all of that?!" and my homegurl who's rocking dreds, "Girl, I didn't know you were workin with all of that." She said so with genuine admiration. Made me really proud.

So, yeah, don't worry MB. I'm sure you'll have a blast rocking your natual tomorrow :yep: Don't worry a bit!

Thanks Whimsy! My hair was lightly pressed and I pulled it into a southern tease bun. Here's what it looks like:

Well, some people are natural because relaxers tear their hair and scalp up so they have no choice. And, some people would rather wear plastic hair than ever wear their own hair, relaxed or natural.

It's like this, natural doesn't automatically equal self love...just like relaxed doesn't automatically equal self hate.

Hopefully, by wearing your hair out, being fly, and loving it, you're setting an example for them and letting them know that wearing your natural hair can be synonymous with beauty. Better to show them than to tell them.

Wow!!! that's crazy. All of the naturals that I know are proud to be so. I can't imagine any of them saying such a thing. That really makes me appreciate the ladies here.

Ha, of course they didn't have anything to say when you asked them what's so bad about being natural. But what I really came in here to say was:

:Blush2: OMG! I'm so honored! You're very welcome! :giveheart: It is viewers like you that make me feel even MORE comfortable wearing my hair natural and continue making videos! :yep::yep: :love4:

:lachen: Awwww Mwedzi, you are gonna get me! Cuz I didn't take a single pic of my fro hawk! And prepping my hair right now to get braided first thing in the morn.

Yall will have to go without seeing my lubly fro hawk for a whole two months! :perplexed

Most of the pics I've taken of my hair were for length checks and just to see the condition of my hair. I didn't start really rocking styles til this past week when I took out my last braids. I do have a couple I've taken, though, of my hair here and there over the last couple months. None of my updos though. But soon! I'll put them in the fotki once I take my braids I'm getting tomorrow down.

Twist out from medium twists. These were my first twists and my first twist out! :)

Baby twists. Taken with cam phone in the bathroom so you know I was feeing it! lol Wish I had pics of this twist out! It was fierce. :ohwell:

Mwedzi, you're one of my hair heros. And you too, LadyKay!!
