Relaxed Hair Thread

Don't know if I posted these detangling products I'm currently using, so here it is.

I'll be 14 weeks post tomorrow and that means my detangling game has got to be ON. I seriously still miss Neutrogena Triple Moisture and Rusk Smoother. Those products made my tangles melt away like butta!

I think the ORS detangling spray and the Pattern Detangling Nectar are up to the task. I don't have to start using them until around 13 weeks. The Nectar has a heavy feel to it and really coats my hair (in a good way). The spray is typical of leave in sprays. No wow factor, but good.

Just my :twocents:.

Re: Rusk Smoother - I wonder what are the differences btwn the version you used to use and their current one. Have you tried it?
*I've never used the product, but I'm always looking for a good detangler. I'm curious about the Pattern spray. The word 'nectar' always sells me - it just sounds moisturizing :lachen:

And this is why I love this site! I had NO IDEA my Rusk Smoother was available again!!!

I remember it went on sale at deep discounts everywhere, then disappeared. I ordered enough to keep me supplied for a while though. But for some reason, I gave up looking for it.

Just bought 2 big bottles on Amazon. Thank you @demlew!

And yes, the word nectar sells me every time too! They know what they doing! Lol!

Yay! I hope you like it! I might look for it the next time I'm in TJ Maxx or Marshall's.

I don't want to get too excited but I think I'm having a good problem. I just installed my mini twists 2 weeks ago and I already have to redo them bc they look like they usually do at 4 weeks.

There are so many factors: me applying stuff to my scalp twice a day, summer growth spurt, reintroducing MT back into my regi along w ayurveda, I've also introduced cloves into the mix in a tea mixed w fenugreek and I'm almost 15 weeks post. Whatever it is, I'm needing to redo my hair styles weekly. So I think I need to go back to cornrows for a little while. Minibraids are only beneficial if I don't have to redo them so often.

I didn't wanna rock a wig for graduation parties and my family trips but I may have to.

Also have been thinking for a while about trying my hand at installing a really bad weave for the purpose of wet bunning this summer.

I really feel like HYH is the key for me to get back the length I lost. Health wise, my hair seems to be doing very well.

@demlew I used my beloved Rusk Smoother tonight and it worked like the magic that it is. What better way to test it than with 14 weeks' worth of newgrowth? :)

The Smoother was like 'girl, please!'. Melted my tangles like nothing!

When I opened that Amazon box and took out a bottle I said 'hello old friend'. :lachen:

Definitely stretching to 16 weeks now.

That's it...I'm buying some!! I need to stretch bc I unintentionally used no-lye instead of my usual lye :-( so I'm going to stretch before I switch back over.

OT: my friend used Affirm on my hair and I really like it, so now I'm trying to decide between Affirm Lye and Affirm Fiberguard Lye - does anyone have a comparison? TIA!

I really… REALLY need to figure out how to do my own trims. I have not been having good salon experiences. It’s not really the services or quality, but the people. :look:

I had to stop going to Envy Me because the owner is an *******, and her knowledge of haircare is sketchy. So at someone’s recommendation, I booked a (black) stylist at an Ulta salon. Ya’ll… This lady talked nonstop about conspiracy theories. I thought I was getting my hair done by Umar Johnson. In fact— at one point she asked me “do you know Umar Johnson?!”. I reluctantly replied that I knew of him and she said “that man is on to something. He’s ON to something!”. :spinning: I was trying to use awkward silence to send her a hint that I’m not in the mood for chatter, but she just kept going. I was kicking myself for leaving my earbuds at home.

I ended up having a little over 2 inches cut and it could still use a little more for root to tip thickness. So yep, all of my growth for this year so far is gone. :ohwell:

One last thing… I was in Trader Joe’s trying to find some Nourish Spa conditioner. I was informed that it has be long discontinued. I almost collapsed from the grief. :cry2:

@Theresamonet

OMG, I didn't know which emoji reaction to use for your post.

You had me cracking up talking about the crazy stylists and then clutching my imaginary pearls at having 2 inches cut off!! And then you can't find your beloved condish..

Girl.

Well…I have my Henna simmering for the next 3 hours and will apply that and indigo right after. I’m so glad I read somewhere about letting henna set for a few hours rather than the 24-48 hours I was doing before. The color release was soooo good last time. This is the only thing I’ve found that doesn’t thin out my hair and provide long lasting color while being relaxed. I won’t stop using again! It may be time consuming but my hair is so much healthier now.

@ItsMeLilLucky - Stop being bad!! :spank: :giggle:

I will say, though, that ever since I started watching Traycee use Ayurveda on her relaxed hair all of those years ago (and her hair reveals), I knew I would keep that in my regi when I switched from natural to relaxed. And it is the absolute truth! Without Ayurveda, my relaxed hair is ok/nice. But WITH Ayurveda, my relaxed hair is bomb! Just natural shine (not sheen), bouncy and happy.

I don't even do any extra steps. I wash my hair with an Ayurveda mix, I use an Ayurvedic mixed conditioner as a leave in, I use an ayurvedic tea as the water in my spray bottle mixes, I use ayurvedic infused oils as my scalp and hair oils and I even use an Ayurveda mix as my primary DC. The only two times that I don't use Ayurveda are when I intend to flat iron and right before a relaxer.

So @Theresamonet I'm joining my play cousin and saying, do it. :angeldevil:

See, I would like to incorporate more Ayurveda into my regimen. I just don’t know about henna. I remember it making my hair feel dry and brittle over time. Is henna the base of your Ayurvedic regimen?

While I'm here, I'm just gonna drop a little encouragement! We've got 5 months until the EOTY, ladies! We still have time to work toward the hair we want!!

Here's a bit of Relaxed Hairspiration:

I actually use it in my conditioner mix that I keep in the shower. I usually leave it in after a cleanse or water rinse.

I always mix henna with something more moisturizing. So my henna mix usually has amla and hibiscus with it.
I use a few tablespoons of each powder at the bottom of an empty bottle. Fill it about 1/3 with hot water and shake it up to make a tea.
And then I fill the rest with a cheapie condish (usually moisturizing) like Suave.
And that's pretty much how I mix both of my conditioners and cleansers.

I used to make an actual henna tea mix with hibiscus, brahmi and Bhringaraj and use that in my spray bottle. And also in my rub in condish mix. But I've since substituted Cassia for Henna in those mixes and I like it better.

I also like to use henna in my DC mix when I feel my hair needs a bit more strengthening. ( ETA: The DC mix is usually started as an Ayurveda paste and then I just add condish to it until it has the consistency of a thickened conditioner.)

I'm not using for color, though, so I'm not sure how well it would work. And I NEVER use henna straight! Like you, I ended up w straw-like hair. BUT that's how I learned about my other boo, salt. :cool2:

@nana mack welcome with open arms! I hear you’re coming back to relaxed after 5 years. Your reasons for coming back are some of the same reasons I started back relaxing a few years ago. Especially after moving from Virginia recommendation Beach to Houston.
Thank you soo much for adding me, for some reason I am having trouble finding threads on this website so this tag helps! I can't wait to dive in and learn how to care for relaxed hair, my appointment date is July 11.

Yes, you can absolutely do Ayurveda without Henna!!
I think Henna was like the gateway powder for the Black hair boards. I remember it being one of the first Ayurveda powders introduced to our hair boards but it doesn't have to be the entry powder. Henna scares the mess outta me too. That's why I never use it solo. I only talked about my Henna mixes bc @Theresamonet said she had packs of it in her garage so I was giving ideas of how to use it up.

I would have to say that my favorite powder is probably Hibiscus. She has been w me since 2010! I find a way to add Hibiscus into almost all of my mixes, it's my safety blanket, lol. I even use it in my salt DC. It's a great conditioner for my hair.

And Shikakai has been my staple since 2010 for cleansing. I like to mix it w Neem sometimes and/or Amla and then a cheapie condish and peppermint castile soap. There are other really great cleansing powders too that ladies rave about (soapnut/Aritha comes to mind), I just stick w what works for me.

ETA: Honorable mentions for Brahmi (strength and conditioning) and Bhringaraj (growth and conditioning) and that's pretty much my stash. I just started using Fenugreek in February to see what the hype was about how it promotes growth. No verdict on it yet.

I was on YT last night and watched a video I used to watch all of the time when I did my first real virgin texlax in 2014. I think she was a member here. But she was absolutely just like a lot of ladies I mention who grew out their relaxed hair under weaves (and wigs). I still love her hair in this video! Definitely one of my motivations to wig the rest of the year for maximum retention.

And I also love how she shows a more subtle texlax texture. I love the range of texlaxed hair to be curly or poofy (like I like mine to be) or just crinkly/wavy like hers.

I love the texture that’s left in her hair. I was wondering how long she stretched her relaxers but I see she mentioned it towards the end. Her hair looks great! I’ve been wearing my hair under wigs as well for the past year. I think I got the idea from watching Reneice grow her clients hair with this method (but I think she’s uses mostly weaves). I’m not savvy enough to do weaves since I DIY. I was getting tired of the wigs, especially with this Houston heat but this just renewed my motivation to keep it up. Thanks for posting!
