I am using the Alter Ego no lye relaxer and it is great. My hair has improved since using it as well as from better hair care practices.

I switched from no-lye to lye this year and my hair thanked me for it. It used to dry out SO easily, not to mention if it ended up under processed it was harder to do a corrective on no-lye relaxed hair than on lye relaxed hair. I think my scalp must be pretty hardcore though, I never base my scalp and never get burned...

IDareT'sHair - That's exactly my summation! I started really watching the relaxer process when my stylist did it.

I was like - shoo, I can do it better and take my time. I also love not having to make appointments on HER schedule.

Have you ever done a corrective?

I've self relaxed with SE regular lye for 4-5 yrs. My hair gets soft and straight, the price is right, and I get complments!!!

@sunnieb

I had been going to the Beauty School (asking for an advanced student) because I thought my technique was a bit off and I was underprocessed.

But after getting my last 3-4 relaxers at the School by a Sr. Student, I realized my skills weren't as bad as I thought.

I would only allow them to: T/U, Neutralize & Conditioner and I would come home and Re-neutralize & Condition. Then DC & finish up.

By my summation/observation, I was doing just as good as a job as they were, and decided to go back to self-relaxing in 2013.

I went to Cosmetology school and the breed of students were different back then. I went twice to get it done by a student after not being able to get to my stylist, and not 100% happy with the other 2 I tried, and WHEW, they tore my hair up, I had to go to my stylist to get a corrective. :nono: (travel of 3 hours round trip)

@JJamiah

Dang! 3 hours? Lawd...my school is up the street from my job.

Mine has actually been good. But every time I get someone I like, they graduate by the next time I need a T/U. (Another reason I need to finally get my techniqe down-pat once & for all).

One good thing is: The actual application was fine. But I just always felt like it was in my best interest to come home & re-neutralize etc....

So, I might as well do everything at home.

My stylist lives out state and she is the ONLY person that has lay'd my relaxer down and I have it PERFECT ERRY time IDareT'sHair. I just was so tired of traveling because my boys schedule is so busy and honestly I was tired just from the 1.5 hours to get there, and ready to die with the 1.5 hour drive back. The school is less then 5 miles from me. I wanted to love the results too. I might go for a hair color though, A brown so they can't fudge that.

:giggle:

HOnestly My hair was healthy relaxed hair, no severe damage, it grew beautifully, and it wasn't dull and coated like when I tried no lye relaxers.

@venusfly

Thanks Ms. Venusfly

*cough* After reading your 1st post, I put my Brand New Tub of MBB on the Exchange Forum.:look:

Truthfully, my hair has done very well with Affirm Fiberguard (Mild) and Lawd knows I don't need no set-back switchin', so I better stick with what I know.:yep:

Especially since Imma try to Self-Relax on my own (again)::lol:

Thanks to your post and @danysedai I think Imma stick with the Affirm.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, girl! :lol: :lol:

I use lye. I did try no-lye when I stopped being natural. It was Phytorelaxer. I had that dull look, even though I chelated, moisturized, sealed, and DC'd. I went back to lye and had Affirm, and love it to this day. Shiny, healthy, thick hair.

I vote lye! I made the switch 2 years ago and I'll never go back to no lye.

Summary:
1. I used to use ORS no-lye and even though the results looked great for a few weeks, my hair was always became dry and brittle (and couldn't hold moisture for long even though I used chelating shampoo and porosity control). I couldn't stretch past 6 weeks with matting/tangles.

2. I then stretched and switched to ORS lye. My hair health improved, but seemed underprocessed. 7 weeks was the max stretch.

3. Stretched and switched to Linange lye. So far this has been the best. I stretch between 8-14 weeks and my hair is still thick and healthy. However, I'm considering switching to the Sally's brand because I can't find Linange in Dallas-Fort Worth and I'm tired of ordering online.

Ladies who use Lineage Lye, do you get the silky look with it?

demlew. Thanks! Yes, that's what I'm debating. I want some texture left to it, but still wanted to be able to get the silky look with flat irons and roller sets. I also hear that their lye doesn't burn and that's what I need for my sensitive scalp.

yynot - Even though I co-wash the night before an appt (protein treatment), I've never experienced burns with either brand. Granted, I don't scrub my scalp, but I do still wash, condition, and detangle (airdry). I also do a second detangle and spritz SAA on my new growth right before my appt without issues.

I always use lye. Lye tends to be gentler on the hair, while no-lye can be easy on the scalp yet leave the hair incredibly dry and brittle over time..Calcium buildup from no lye relaxers (calcium hydroxide) is the culprit. Box relaxers are a big reason black women with relaxers have so much breakage across the board.

I do! Hair has bounce and swing. The neutralizer is a conditioner, which works so well for me. Very moisturizing and gives my hair nice luster.

I'm thinking of going back to no lye, I want straight hair dang it:lol:!
I used no lye mostly since I've been relaxed with no problems, but being on this forum is making me paranoid of it. I'm leaning towards Optimum and ORS no lye relaxers.

I just watched QueenAmaka youtube hair journey video, I think I'm sold on the Optimum.

Heyy Angelinhell Thanks for the shot out. :)

I love love love Optimum. It has made a big difference in my hair. For years I was going to the salon and getting lye relaxers. My hair was constantly breaking and my scalp was suffering. In 2010 I switched to no lye and after trying ors no lye and dark and lovely with fair results, I was introduced to my other "baby daddy" Optimum. Nothing but good things to say about Optimum. :yep::yep:
